Spotlighting this trailblazer in neonatology in Zambia!! Celebrating Dr. Kunda Mutesu-kapembwa. Her passion for newborns is unmatched!

Dr. Kunda Mutesu-kapembwa is a Paediatrician and Neonatologist working in Zambia. She holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, a Master in Paediatrics and Child Health, a Certificate and Master of Philosophy in Neonatology.

She did her medical training in Zambia at the The University of Zambia -UNZA which culminated in the award of the Master of Medicine in Paediatrics and Child Health 12 years ago. After that she was awarded a Master of Philosophy in Neonatology at University of Cape Town (South Africa) 7 years ago. The training from both institutions equipped her with the skill and confidence to look after a child from birth.

Following her graduation as a neonatologist 7 years ago, she immediately returned to practice in Zambia, initially at Livingstone Teaching Hospital and later at the University Teaching Hospitals- Women and Newborn Hospital from 2017 to 2021. During this period, she embarked on training doctors in the care of newborn babies and implemented low-cost interventions that resulted in a reduction in newborn deaths (neonatal mortality) from 35% in the first quarter of 2017 to 26% in the first quarter of 2020.

She was appointed Ministry of Health National Coordinator for Neonatal Services, from 2017 to 2022, with focus on promoting the training of medical doctors in a Zambia Colleges of Medicine and Surgery - Zacoms certified post-graduate diploma in Neonatology. She further advocated for and established a neonatal nurses training programs at diploma and Master’s degree levels.

Additionally, she understood the importance of having an integrated care of the newborn from the community level to the advanced neonatal intensive care unit level and encouraged the imparting of skills in our referral hospitals.

Kunda is a multi-award recipient including the President’s Insignia of Meritorious Achievement for the participation in the successful operation/care of omphalopagus/Siamese twins in 2018, Zambia Medical Association, 2020 Mid-Career Doctor’s Award and Livingstone Rotary Club award.

Her career is dedicated to nursing and doctors’ education and to the health of newborns (neonates) and their families.

She Co-founded Newborn Support Zambia, a not-for-profit Non-Governmental Organisation to help improve the care of neonates in Zambia.
