MULUNGUSHI UNIVERSITY PARTNERS WITH USAID TO TRANSFORM ZAMBIA’S HONEY INDUSTRY

Mulungushi University in Kabwe, in partnership with USAID Zambia, is driving economic transformation and sustainable growth by empowering local honey producers to add value to their products and expand their markets.

Led by Lecturer Dr. Malunga Mwape, the initiative is helping Zambian honey producers diversify their offerings by turning raw honey into innovative products such as honey drinks and biscuits. These value-added products are being sold in markets as far as Congo DR and Malawi, with plans to harvest bee venom for biomedicine in the near future.

Mulungushi University is also playing a critical role as an off-taker, providing honey producers with a stable market while equipping them with essential skills in record keeping, business management, customer care, and loan acquisition.

“This initiative not only strengthens small and medium businesses but also creates jobs and promotes sustainable economic growth,” said Dr. Mwape.

The partnership reflects Mulungushi University’s commitment to practicing what it teaches, showcasing the potential for higher education institutions to directly contribute to economic development.

With support from USAID Zambia, the collaboration is helping honey producers maximize their potential, driving innovation, and opening new opportunities for Zambian entrepreneurs to thrive in regional markets.

IMMIGRATION DEPARTMENT WARNS AGAINST HARBORING ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS

The Department of Immigration has issued a stern warning to the public against harboring illegal immigrants, emphasizing that such actions constitute a serious offence under the Immigration and Deportation Act.

Immigration Department Spokesperson Namati Nshinka stated that individuals found guilty of harboring illegal immigrants face severe penalties, including up to five years imprisonment with hard labor, a fine of K200,000, or both.

“Harboring illegal immigrants undermines national security. We urge all Zambians to act responsibly by complying with the law and avoiding this serious offence,” Mr. Nshinka said.

The department has also encouraged citizens to report suspected cases of illegal immigration to the nearest immigration office or through designated reporting channels to help combat the issue.

This warning comes amid growing concerns over the presence of undocumented individuals in various parts of the country, with reports suggesting some Zambian citizens are aiding their stay.

The Department of Immigration reiterated its commitment to ensuring national security and maintaining order, calling on the public to cooperate in upholding immigration laws.

NAQEZ RAISES ALARM OVER DELAYED SCHOOL GRANT DISBURSEMENTS

The National Action for Quality Education in Zambia (NAQEZ) has expressed deep concern over the government’s failure to disburse school grants on time, warning that the delay could compromise the readiness of schools for effective teaching and learning in the 2025 academic year.

NAQEZ Executive Director, Dr. Aaron Chansa, noted that while the government had consistently supported schools with timely grant disbursements since January 2022, the current lapse was alarming.

“This development places school headteachers in an awkward position, potentially jeopardizing schools’ ability to prepare adequately for the new term,” Dr. Chansa said.

He urged the government to clarify the reasons for the delay, emphasizing the importance of prompt funding for ensuring schools start the term on a strong footing.

“We are wondering what has gone wrong this time around. The government must urgently mobilize resources to avoid compromising the quality of education,” Dr. Chansa added.

NAQEZ has called on the Ministry of Finance to expedite the grant disbursement process, stressing the critical role of funding in maintaining educational standards.

ERB ENGAGES STAKEHOLDERS TO ADDRESS FUEL STOCK-OUTS

The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has assured the nation that measures are being implemented to normalize fuel supply following sporadic stock-outs experienced at some filling stations across the country.

In a statement issued by Acting Public Relations Manager Chibulu Musonda, the ERB revealed that it held a closed-door meeting on Friday, January 10, 2025, with Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), petroleum transporters, and officials from the Ministry of Energy to resolve the ongoing fuel supply challenges.

The meeting, chaired by ERB Board Chairperson James Banda, identified logistical issues as the primary cause of the shortages. Stakeholders in the supply chain committed to addressing these challenges to ensure a smoother flow of fuel to all parts of the country.

“The ERB Board Chairperson reiterated the Regulator’s desire to see the smooth flow of fuel in all parts of the country and urged stakeholders to maintain constant engagement to prevent further disruptions,” the statement read.

During the meeting, some OMCs reported that their sites were adequately stocked with both petrol and diesel, with additional stock currently in transit.

The ERB’s daily monitoring exercise has also shown improvement in fuel availability over the past week. Of the 619 filling stations monitored nationwide as of January 10, 2025, 487 stations were selling both petrol and diesel, while 119 stations had no petrol. Only 19 filling stations had no stock of either product.

The ERB has assured the public of its continued efforts to stabilize the fuel supply and emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to prevent future disruptions.

UMODZI KUM’MAWA CONDEMNS UPND GOVERNMENT’S ALLEGED MANIPULATION OF JUDICIARY

The Kum’mawa Development Coalition, also known as Umodzi Kum’mawa, has issued a strong statement condemning what it describes as the “blatant and distressing abuse of the Judiciary” by the United Party for National Development (UPND) government.

In a statement released by its spokesperson, Chanoda Ngwira F., the coalition criticized the government’s recent legal moves, including efforts to review the Constitutional Court’s ruling on the status of ministers after the dissolution of Parliament. The coalition also referenced previous attempts to alter court judgments on eligibility cases, accusing the UPND of undermining judicial independence.

“This manipulation of our legal system raises alarms about the UPND’s commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law,” the statement read.

The coalition further lambasted the government for prioritizing legal maneuvers over addressing urgent national challenges, including escalating hunger, the high cost of living, and the ongoing energy crisis.

“It is alarming to witness the UPND’s readiness to compromise the integrity of our institutions to serve its political interests, rather than fulfilling the promises made to the Zambian people,” Ngwira stated.

Calling for unity among citizens, the coalition urged Zambians to defend the judiciary and reject any attempts to undermine its independence.

“What was deemed unacceptable when the UPND was in opposition should remain intolerable now that they hold power,” the statement emphasized.

The coalition also appealed to President Hakainde Hichilema and the Chief Justice to consider the long-term implications of their actions.

“The path of undermining established legal precedents and manipulating institutions may offer temporary benefits, but it is a road that will ultimately haunt them and the nation in the long run,” Ngwira warned.

The Kum’mawa Development Coalition called on the government to shift its focus to addressing critical issues affecting ordinary citizens rather than engaging in what it described as “reckless and self-serving legal battles.”

LUNGU ACCUSES HICHILEMA GOVERNMENT OF UNDERMINING DEMOCRACY AND JUDICIARY

Former President, Patriotic Front (PF) leader and Tonse Alliance Chairman Edgar Chagwa Lungu has accused President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration of attempting to undermine Zambia’s democracy and judiciary, following reports of a fresh Constitutional Court challenge.

In a statement issued on his page and monitored by Spice FM, Mr. Lungu expressed concern over what he described as a “high-profile assault on democracy and constitutionalism.”

“Today is a sad day in the history of our country as we witness yet again another attempt by President Hakainde Hichilema’s government to alter the course of democracy and good governance by reversing another Constitutional Court decision,” he wrote.

Referring to a 2016 case under his administration, Lungu reminded the public of a Concourt ruling that declared it unconstitutional for cabinet ministers to remain in office after the dissolution of Parliament ahead of elections. The ruling, made in 2020, compelled his ministers to refund emoluments received during that period, emphasizing the principle of ensuring a level political playing field.

However, Lungu criticized a recent legal challenge by a Lusaka lawyer seeking to overturn that 2020 decision, describing it as a move allegedly orchestrated by the United Party for National Development (UPND).

“This gesture is both shocking, annoying, and disappointing for every Zambian because it is another high-profiled assault on our judiciary, democracy, and constitutionalism,” he said.

The former president further accused President Hichilema of sponsoring the petition as part of a broader effort to erode judicial independence, referencing the December 10, 2024 Concourt decision that barred him from contesting the 2026 elections.

“I warned on December 10, 2024, that the decision to bar me transcended my fate. It speaks to the erosion of judicial independence, the weaknesses of our democratic foundations, and the weaponization of our institutions for short-term gains,” Lungu stated.

He called on Zambians to resist what he termed a “bogus court petition” through legal means and peaceful demonstrations to protect the principle of separation of powers.

“The appetite by President HH to defile the constitution, r**e the judiciary, and undermine our hard-earned democracy is worrying and alarming,” he added.

Lungu urged citizens to take action, warning that silence in the face of injustice would erode Zambia’s democracy.

_“He has spoken to us by a Son.”_

_*The beginning of the Letter to the Hebrews (HEBREWS 1: 1 - 6)*_

In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets; but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the ages. He reflects the glory of God and bears the very stamp of his nature, upholding the universe by his word of power. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has obtained is more excellent than theirs. For to what angel did God ever say, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”? Or again, “I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son”? And again, when he brings the first-born into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.”

The Lord is king, let earth rejoice;
let the many islands be glad.
Justice and right are the foundation of his throne. *R/.*

_*A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (MARK 1: 14 - 20)*_

After John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel.” And passing along by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you become fishers of men.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. And immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and followed him.

HOME AFFAIRS MINISTER COMMENDS ZAMBIA POLICE FOR UPHOLDING PEACE AND SECURITY

Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Jack Mwiimbu, has praised the Zambia Police Service for their unwavering efforts in maintaining peace and security across the country.

Speaking during the 2024 Zambia Police Service Superior Officers’ Annual Ball held at the Zambia National Service (ZNS) Banquet Hall in Lusaka, Mr. Mwiimbu lauded the dedication and resilience of police officers despite the challenges they face.

“Police officers devote significant time, energy, and effort to ensure the nation’s safety and stability. This is a challenging yet critical responsibility,” he stated.

The Minister underscored the importance of public cooperation in ensuring a secure environment, adding, “The Zambia Police Service continues to enjoy a harmonious collaboration with the public because maintaining peace and security requires the collective effort of all well-meaning citizens and foreign nationals.”

However, Mr. Mwiimbu expressed concern over the misconduct of some officers and stressed the need for discipline within the ranks. “Discipline must be the cornerstone of every man and woman in uniform,” he emphasized.

He called on stakeholders to support the Police Service and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing professionalism, innovation, and adherence to the rule of law, as outlined in the 2023-2026 Zambia Police Service Strategic Plan.

Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba also addressed the event, highlighting the importance of community collaboration in combating crime. “It is through teamwork and collaborative efforts that we celebrate our achievements today, creating a safer environment for social and economic development,” he said.

The ball also heard from Paramilitary Battalion Commanding Officer Yobe Luhana, chairperson of the event, who expressed gratitude to the organizing committee for ensuring its success.

The annual event provided an opportunity for superior officers to reflect on their contributions to national security while celebrating their achievements and commitment to the Zambian people.
