His Royal Highness Chief Mumena of the Kaonde people has expressed deep concern over the rapid depletion of customary land in the North-Western Province, with only 5 percent of the land remaining free from mineral exploration and exploitation. He attributed this alarming situation to the state’s continued acquisition of traditional land for mining activities without obtaining consent from local communities.
Speaking during the Environmental Protection Dialogue where he was among the guest speakers, Chief Mumena criticized the laws and policies that allow mining companies to receive licenses from Lusaka without the engagement or approval of local settlers. He emphasized that this process is not only disenfranchising the people but also taking away their heritage.

The chief further lamented the long-term environmental damage caused by mining activities in the region. He stressed the importance of protecting the environment from pollution, as enshrined in the Zambian constitution. "We must ensure that our natural resources, including our land and forests, are preserved for future generations. This is not just about development today, but about the legacy we leave for tomorrow," he noted.
Chief Mumena also called for the protection of traditional land from exploitation, saying there needs to be a balance between development and safeguarding the interests of local communities. "Our lands are being taken away for exploration, but the local people see very little benefit. There needs to be more transparency, and the local communities must have a say in how their land is used," he said.
He urged the government to revise existing policies to ensure that local settler
