FIVE NABBED FOR PANGOLIN SCALES, PISTOL

LUSAKA, Wednesday September 14, 2023

The Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW)’s Rapid Response Unit has apprehended five suspects for illegal possession of pangolin scales and a pistol in Monze District, Southern Province.

The suspects namely; Rogers Hamunjala, 55, from Gwembe, Clever Masuku, 59, a farmer of Monze, Edward Busiku, 57, a farmer of Monze, Paul Hamacha, 61, farmer of Monze and Chrispine Halwimbi, 62, also a farmer from Monze.

They had a contraband of pangolin scales weighing two kilogrammes, a pistol and four live ammos concealed in a laptop bag.

Upon noticing the presence of DNPW officers the suspects attempted to open fire on the Wildlife Police Officers who were on high alert and managed to overpower the distrusts after grabbing the gun.

The five are still detained at Monze Police Station and will appear in court soon.

Pangolins are trafficked mainly for their scales, which are believed to treat a variety of health conditions in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), while in Africa, pangolins are sold as a form of bushmeat, for ritual or spiritual purposes.

This is according to a statement Issued by Ministry of Tourism and Arts Public Relations Officer Sakabilo Kalembwe.

Speeding driver kills Lusaka pupils

THREE pupils of Lusaka's Family Legacy School in Ibex Hill along with a yet-to-be identified male adult have died after a speeding driver bashed them as they headed for lessons this morning.

The deceased pupils have been identified as James Phiri, Felix Mwansa, and Richard Mapulanga aged 13, 14 and 15 years respectively.

The fourth pupil involved in the accident identified as Samson Ngoma aged 13 survived with injuries and is currently admitted to the University Teaching Hospital.

In confirming the accident, Zambia Police Service deputy spokesperson Danny Mwale said it happened around 06:30 hours in Ibex Hill area.

"Police investigations indicate that the accident occurred when the driver of a Toyota Camry bearing registration number BAL 5830 lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed and hit into five pedestrians who were walking off the road in the opposite direction near Saint Agnes Health Clinic," Mwale explained.

"The driver, identified as Mulemwa Akamani aged 26 of Woodlands sustained minor injuries. He was treated at the same clinic and later discharged. He has been detained in Police custody yet to be charged, he added.

Mwale said the bodies of victims have been deposited in the University Teaching Hospital mortuary awaiting formal identification.

MONZE MAN LEAVES K24, PICTURE WHERE HE WAVES GOODBYE AND ALLEGEDLY COMMITS SU***DE

A sugar cane trader has been found dead hanging from a tree in Monze’s High School Area, near Tandabale Market, in what appears to be a case of su***de.

Eye witnesses report that the victim was found dead with a shirt tied around his neck, with his trousers hanging from his feet.

The victim’s wife, Charity Muleya, 23, (in picture) identifies the diceased as Gift Muleya, 24, of Hamaundu Village in Pemba.

She tells Byta FM Zambia that the victim left her in bed in the early hours of Tuesday, leaving behind a phone, K24 cash and a photo of himself - in which he appears to be waving goodbye.

Muleya says she got up in the morning and went to urinate and later found her husband hanging from a tree, after which she broke down in tears.

The victim leaves behind a wife and a baby aged one.

Police have since collected the victim’s remains, but an official statement on the matter is yet to be released.

TODDLER SUDDENLY DIES AFTER ALLEGEDLY SWALLOWING BEANS.

A 1-year-old baby has died in Chinsali District after allegedly swallowing beans.

The baby's mother Sibeso Noyo told police that while she was at work, she received a phone call from her housemaid Melody Chiti around 11 hours on Tuesday that the baby was unwell and was being rushed to the hospital at the time.

The maid explained to her that the child was playing and while she was in the kitchen she noticed that the baby was choking and Saliva was coming from the mouth.

And when she closely checked, she saw some beans in the baby's mouth.

Muchinga Province Deputy Commanding Officer Ronald Zambo has confirmed the sad development to Chete FM News.

Mr Zambo says with the help of the neighbors, the child was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The body has been deposited into the mortuary awaiting postmortem to ascertain the exact cause of death.

2 Lusaka Rockview University students die side-beside

THE University Teaching Hospital Brought-In-Dead section this afternoon received two bodies of students believed to be from Rockview University.

Identified as Mumbi Matakuto 23 and Hildah Mumba aged 22 are said to have died side-by-side although the details leading to their death still remain murky at the moment.

LUSAKA - Former First Lady Esther Lungu and four others have been arrested and charged with four counts of;theft of Mitsubish Canter, Toyota Alex, Toyota RunX and Certificate of Title for a property in Libala), properties of both Elizabeth Chanje Phiri and Hannah Patel.

The alleged offences are said to have occurred between May 2022 and September 2022.

The former First Lady has been arrested together with police officers who acted upon Mrs. Lungu's earlier complaint and helped execute the recovery.

The officers are; James Phiri, Moses Lungu, Catherine Banda, Kapambwe Lungu, and Ray Chisulo, police officers that dealt with the complaint from Mrs. Lungu.

Mrs. Lungu and others remain detained at Ibex Police Station.

This is a matter in which the former First Lady, Mama Esther Lungu gave her niece $400,000 cash for safekeeping.

However, the niece then passed on the money and gave it to another person identified as Elizabeth Chanje Phiri and her daughter, Fuhanah Patel.

Later, after it was discovered that there was the loss of this money, police pursued Elizabeth Chanje Phiri. She later entered into an agreement with the former First Lady and decided to surrender motor vehicles and other properties from the same proceeds of the $400,000 she is alleged to have been misappropriated in order to settle the matter.

However early this year, Elizabeth Chanje Phiri and her daughter Hannah Patel proceeded to file a criminal complaint on this matter alleging that their properties were stolen from.

Elizabeth Chanje Phiri claims these properties were allegedly stolen from her by the former First Lady, Mama Esther Lungu and others.

The former First Lady is being accompanied to Ibex Police Station by former President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, PF Acting President, Given Lubinda, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament , Brian Mundubile, Emmanuel Mwamba, Munir Zulu, Christoher Shakafuswa, Chanda Katotobwe, former Secretary General Davies Mwila, Frank Ngambi, Mutotwe Kafwaya and others.

She is being represented by Makebi Zulu from Makebi and Advocates and Charles Changano from D. Findlay &Associates.

Police arrest Esther Lungu for theft

POLICE in Lusaka have arrested former first lady Esther Lungu on four counts of theft, PF deputy chairperson for information and publicity Emmanuel Mwamba has announced.

According to Mwamba, Esther has been arrested along with four others.

The former first lady is accused of stealing a Mitsubish Canter, Toyota Alex, Toyota RunX and Certificate of Title for a property in Libala), properties of both Elizabeth Chanje Phiri and Hannah Patel.

In a Facebook posting, Mwamba revealed that the alleged offences are said to have occurred between May 2022 and September 2022.

"The former First Lady has been arrested together with police officers who acted upon Mrs. Lungu's earlier complaint and helped execute the recovery," Mwamba wrote.

LUFWANYAMA MAN DIΒ£S AFTER BEING STUCK ON THE WINDOW OF HIS HOUSE

A 51-year-old-man of Lufwanyama District has d!ed after being stuck on the window of his house.

Brief facts of the matter are that the deceased, on 3rd September 2023 around 17 hours, went to drink beer and came back around 24 hours and found the door to his house locked, as his children were asleep.

According to Copperbelt Police Commissioner Peacewell Mweemba, the deceased after seeing that the door was locked, he decided to enter through his bedroom window but failed to go inside and later shouted for his mother who usually opened the door for him.

The commissioner, said upon hearing his voice, the children woke up and found him on the window stuck, after which they rushed to call the neighbors, who managed to remove him but found that he was already dead.

POLICE SHOOT MAN WHILE DISPERSING ANGRY MOB

A 28-year-old man from Chinsali District in Mulolo village has died after he was hit by a stray bullet as police were dispersing an angry mob.

Muchinga Province Deputy Police Commissioner, Ronald Zambo has identified the deceased as Jackson Mukuka, who was among the unruly mob.

Mr Zambo has told Nakonde FM News that the incident occurred on Saturday when an angry mob attacked Joseph Chanda on suspicions of practising witchcraft.

"A concerned citizen from the said Village reported through a cell phone call that a mob of people at Mulolo Village attacked Chanda Joseph on suspicions that he is a wizard.

Acting on the report,officers rushed to the said village and found an angry mob which advanced towards them while throwing stone." He said.

Mr. Zambo explained that Police fired teargas and warning shots at the mob, but unfortunately, a stray bullet hit Mukuka, before rescuing Chanda.

He says both victims were rushed to Chinsali District Hospital, where Mukuka died on Sunday morning, while Chanda remains admitted as he sustained cuts on the head, arms and swollen face.

2 Matero men break housemate's neck, arm over flash disk

A 40-year old man identified as Steven Njobvu of Lusaka's Matero Township is battling for his life in Chingwere Clinic nursing a broken neck and arm among other life-threatening injuries after his two housemates brutally beat him before throwing him into a drainage on accusations that he had stolen their USB flash Disk.

Community members that witnessed the incident this morning apprehended the two attackers after they attempted to flee the scene and surrendered them to Lilanda Police Station.
