Rwandan President Paul Kagame on his recent conversations with South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa on the happenings in Easten Congo, “What has been said about these conversations in the media by South African officials and President Ramaphosa himself contains a lot of distortion, deliberate attacks, and even lies. If words can change so much from a conversation to a public statement, it says a lot about how these very important issues are being managed.”
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe has called for calm following recent policy changes by the United States Government, assuring the public that Zambia is actively engaging with U.S. officials to navigate the transition.
TEMPORAL CROSSING ON ST. MARY’S ROAD ASHED AWAY AGAIN
A temporary crossing point on St. Mary’s Road west of Monze District, has been washed away following torrential rains on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, leaving many residents stranded.
This latest incident marks the second time the road has been rendered impassable. The initial damage occurred on January 21 when heavy rains cut off the road at the Mulonga Wangoma Bridge, disrupting access for residents of Hatontola, Katimba, Hamavwa and Mayaba Wards.
In order to provide temporary relief, the local authority had facilitated emergency repairs through the Cash for Work program, with community members ferrying stones to restore passage but yesterday's heavy downpour has undone those efforts and left the road inaccessible once again.
St. Mary’s Ward Development Committee (WDC) representative Oliver Mukampaila, who supervised the earlier works, has expressed concern over the road’s continued vulnerability.
Mr. Mukampaila noted that while the Cash for Work initiative had been a short-term solution, it may no longer be effective in sustaining the road.
Mr. Mukampaila has since urged the government to step in with a more permanent solution as he emphasized the need for urgent intervention to ensure residents can access essential services in Monze’s Central Business District.
The road is already part of a broader rehabilitation project funded by the German government, with full-scale works including the construction of new bridges expected to begin once the rainy season subsides around April.
However, the current situation has left communities in urgent need of a viable alternative for safe passage.
