SA Weather Service Bloemfontein: We have reviewed social media reports, including videos, indicating a possible tornado in Welkom, which is said to have occurred around 12:41 PM (05/01/2025). These reports show evidence of damage, such as roofs being torn off and trees uprooted, suggesting the impact aligns with EF1 classifications. Upon reviewing the radar data from that time, we observed a single-cell thunderstorm over the area. Single-cell thunderstorms are typically associated with weak tornadoes, often referred to as landspouts. These tornadoes are short-lived, usually lasting only a brief period, and typically cause minor to moderate damage. Given the surface conditions at the time, the radar observations support the possibility of a landspout tornado occurring in Welkom. In conclusion, the evidence from social media and radar data strongly suggests that a short-lived landspout tornado caused the observed damage in Welkom. The impact of this event appears to be in the lower end of the tornado scale, with minor to moderate damage typical of landspouts. Attached is CCTV footage of the Welkom Fire Brigade as the tornado occurred. Damage is estimated between R10 million and R15 million.
