Creative trends 2024: Crafting effective digital ads

Despite persistent load shedding and various other economic pressures, Kantar research has shown that South Africans have remained committed to staying connected. SAffers are finding a sanctuary in the digital sphere – not only to get reprieve from the challenges of everyday life, but also as a means for connection, information, and entertainment. This presents a golden opportunity for brands to leverage the power of effective digital creative.

Our predictions on the key trends and strategies that will define successful digital creative in 2024 are:

Leave a lasting impression with brand at the centre stage
In 2024, the most effective digital ads will be those where the brand takes centre stage in an enjoyable way. While creativity is essential, the brand's identity must shine through seamlessly. Integration from the outset, with a clear and consistent message, will ensure that audiences not only remember the ad but can also effortlessly link it to the brand.

Emotion as the driver of engagement
82% of emotional ads positively impact brand demand. The power of emotion in digital advertising cannot be overstated. Whether through music, compelling dialogue, or other tactics, successful digital creatives in 2024 will be those that elicit a genuine emotional response. Emotion not only captures attention but also forms a lasting connection with the audience. Global studies show that South Africans appreciate humour in advertising more than the rest of world. However, humour in advertising has seen a decline over the years, accelerated by the pandemic. Leveraging consumers’ affinity for humour to build emotion is a great way for brands to create impactful and memorable ads.

The 5-second challenge
Digital ads typically have five seconds to capture attention and drive behaviour. This has meant that most brands opt for performance ads in the digital space. However, there is no reason to suggest that a digital platform cannot be used to tell a brand story. In fact, given the continued growth in online platforms, we must challenge ourselves to use digital to build brand demand because it will help avoid the skip if people are engaged.

According to Stacy Saggers, commercial growth director for Kantar South Africa, telling a brand story in the digital space is not easy but it is a challenge worth investing in. Brands that invest in the creative challenge of engaging the audience emotionally, within these initial five seconds, will be the ones that set themselves apart from the rest in 2024.

Customisation for platform
When it comes to creating ads for digital platforms, it’s not a case of one size fits all. Brands that tailor their ads to the specific platform, will be more successful. In other words, what works on TV may not work on YouTube. In fact, 52% of TV ads plonked onto a digital platform have lower levels of enjoyment and 46% have lower impact on brand metrics. Successful digital creatives in 2024 will have a good understanding of the audience expectations and consumer missions that define the equity of each platform, and will work with these nuances to create relevant and engaging content.

Seamless integration across platforms
Take consumers on a brand journey. It is not conducive to effective storytelling to have a team dedicated to above the line content and another dedicated to below the line. Brands need to weave coherent stories that work across all platforms, particularly as there is so little time to land the story with audiences. Kantar has seen that ads that are well integrated across media touchpoints drive overall campaign effectiveness up by 31%. Successful digital creative will be those that seamlessly integrate across platforms, creating a unified brand narrative. Coordination and consistency will be the drivers of crafting impactful storytelling.

The silver bullet to effective digital advertising? Crafting creatives that are brand-centric, positive, emotionally resonant, attention-grabbing within five seconds, platform-customised, and seamlessly integrated across touchpoints will be the key to unlocking success in the digital sphere in 2024.

Kirsty Carlson and Livia Brown have joined forces to create South Africa’s first out-of-home advertising podcast.

This podcast will cover OOH advertising and more across South Africa and Rest of Africa.

Carlson and Brown are experts in the field of out-of-home (OOH) advertising, with over 12+ years of experience. They have successfully led OOH departments in large media agency groups in South Africa, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the OOH landscape, its complexities, challenges, and benefits. They have also developed key relationships with partners in this ever-evolving space. To share their insights and knowledge, they have created a podcast where they invite industry experts to discuss insightful and topical OOH discussions. The objective of the podcast is to inform, educate, inspire, and guide the industry in South Africa and the rest of Africa on all things OOH.

To conceptualize, produce, direct, edit and master quality video content for internal and external business purposes.

To communicate and liaise with internal parties in order to transform briefs into video content.

To produce quality video content that meets delivery deadlines, receives good audience engagement, and achieves set performance targets.

To conduct pre-production for all video assignments being undertaken and correctly brief the required parties ahead of the shoot.

Manage and coordinate the production of videos and video livestreams in terms of the correct setting up of cameras, proper lighting, proper use of mics to capture sound, directing the subjects and filming the content according to pe-production and the client brief.

To perform post-production in terms of using relevant software for editing, sourcing and using suitable non-copyrighted music, recording voiceovers, sourcing and attribution of stock images or footage, utilising B-rolls, graphics, good colour grading, correct titling and overall production of good quality video content.

To ensure that videos are published to the right platforms, on time and that effective captions for the video are written as informed by the digital strategy.
To ensure the safekeeping and responsible use of company equipment and report breakages for repair and maintenance timely.

To adhere to operational processes that assist with the departmental workflow by contributing to the content calendar, and by attending and participating in departmental meetings and workshops.

To constantly monitor the performance of video content and suggest and/or make the necessary adjustments to induce audience interest.

To attend relevant training sessions or workshops and acquire new skills to enhance capabilities.

To create videos that raise awareness of the KAYA 959 brand.

Dear Interviewee,

TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF.

You know what they say about first impressions? You cannot afford to blow it at the very beginning.

Note that it is possible to be considered for a position in the first 5 minutes of the if you play your cards right by answering the simple yet dreaded question “Tell me about yourself/let us get to meet you/briefly introduce yourself”

There are two main reasons why a recruiter asks the question “TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF”

1. To know if they can work with you (behavioral and fit)
2. To assess if you have the necessary KSA for the position ( fit)

Your answer to this has the potential to set the course for the rest of the interview

Here’s a sample approach to answering this ⬇️

Step 1️⃣. Start with your Name + status ( I am ###x a certified professional in ###### with over 3 years of working experience across ###x sectors)

Step 2️⃣. Next, express Your passion/motivation (e.g I am passionate about ###x)

Step 3️⃣. Brief run down on Experience/Academics (My passion has guided my career path with a first degree in ###x and a master's in ###xx. I have also held several positions including ######xx)

Step 4️⃣. Achievements (through my career, I have been able to support organizations in ######, and some of my achievements include ######)

Step 5️⃣ Hard/soft skills/personality type (I have developed my skills in ###xx and I am effective at ###x. I am the ### type of person)

Step 6️⃣ proposal (I am confident that if I am considered for this position you’d be impressed by my ###xx or I will effectively support the dept/org in improving ###xx process)

Step 7️⃣ Thank you

Why is this strategy effective?

1️⃣ The interview becomes more interactive because the interviewer can now probe from your response rather than focus on the preplanned questions. This puts you in charge
2️⃣ The recruiter will have something to relate from - from your person, motivation, passion, experience, and goals. There would be a connection with the recruiter
3️⃣ If done well you would have already scored high and impressed the audience which may cover up for your other downsides.

However, Make sure to 👇

1. Keep your answer between 2-4 mins MAX
2. Take deep breaths and maintain pauses after power points
3. Watch body language to know when you are losing the audience
4. Do not cram a response, let the recruiter meet the real you.
5. Practice, Practice, Practice. Record yourself, listen, and make adjustments.
