Another side of the coin, that has generally been ignored for the past 20+ years, is that we, the Black Businesses, have not done our part in full when it comes to our responsibility of growing our businesses. The outcry rising from these news and this awakening is solely based on the fact that we still seem unwilling to do our part in full in order to grow our businesses.

Scoring Tenders based on being a Black Owned Business is not the only way of growing a Business. All these years since 1994, we generally seem to be unwilling to do the following in order to grow our businesses:

1) Professional Branding
Any business that intends to become stable and successful require a professionally designed Brand Identity. This refers to the company Logo, the Letterhead, the Business Profile, the Services/Products Catalogue, Quotation and Invoice Docs. This is overall Business Image and it plays a very important role in how the market perceives and engage with the business. It is a very valuable asset to the business that deserves good investment. Successful companies who understand this pour in a lot of funds into their Brand Image. Majority of Black Businesses refuse to see value in this aspect and consequently do not invest enough or at all into this aspect of their business and, as a result, end up relying on “other means” to secure business.

2) Standard Prices of Services/Products
The majority of highly successful companies set standard prices for their products and services, prices that are competitive in the market and profitable to the company. This way, the focus is shifted to the quality of services/products instead of prices and then business becomes a matter of sales volumes. This also demands knowledge of marketing and advertising for a business. Majority of Black Businesses want to avoid all this and have prices that fluctuate according to how “loaded” is the prospective client and how desperate is the service provider at the point in time.

3) Professional Website
Lacking understanding of Marketing and Advertising, most Black Businesses do not recognize the value and the role of a professional website that is designed and developed according to the nature of business the company does. As a result, a website is generally perceived as an expensive nice-to-have luxury, instead of a tool that actually generate sales volumes for the company.

4) Adequate Online Marketing
These days, there are so many Social Media Platforms and web based tools available to use in order to market and advertise services and products of any company. The art of combining a well developed Website with Social Media Accounts, Search Engine Optimization and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tools - this is the core origin of success for companies globally. These are the resources that we, Black Business Owners, should be more reliant on at this day and age.

5) Learn and Adapting
We do not have to always look at things only from one side of the coin, we need to see all sides, dive in deep into matters and be willing to do our part in full in order to see success. Being Black alone is not a way of running a business. We need to be interested in all aspects and resources of running a successful business. We need to be willing to learn and see value in all available resources, so that we are never in a position to be threatened by one, single and remotely related element of running a business in the whole world.
