50 BILLION BIRDS 🦜
A pioneering community science project spearheaded by has estimated that there are around 50 billion individual birds on Earth! The estimates were developed from , a platform where millions of bird observations were logged by birdwatchers all round the world. Awesome!

COOL CORAL 🐠
Coral get their food from tiny algae that live in their tissues, who are at risk of death from rising sea temperatures. Excitingly, new research from shows that some coral can ‘swap out’ their algal friends for species which are more tolerant to warming temperatures. This tactic could help them survive in the face of climate change - yay!

CRANES RETURN TO IRELAND 🐣
After 300 years of absence, common cranes have returned the Republic of Ireland. A pair have settled on a rewetted peat bog in the midlands – and they’re already nesting! Hopefully their nest will be successful, and more cranes may settle next year.

Check out this astonishing civilisation! 🤯This is Sigiriya, a historic monument in Sri Lanka. The earliest records suggest that while Sigiriya has stood as a palace and fortress complex for hundreds of years, it was first used as a monastery in the 3rd century BC. Wow!

Would you like to visit this incredible place? We certainly would! 😍

GOOD NEWS! 🥳It's Wednesday, and that means more positive science stories...

SEA TURTLE SUCCESS 🥚
Sea turtles in the Cayman Islands are recovering from the brink of a local extinction! Both green and loggerhead turtle populations have seen very successful breeding seasons, with lots of newborns successfully making their way into the ocean. Yay!

SCARECROWS FOR SEABIRDS 🦆
These googly-eyed devices are to be tested in fisheries, after a study has found that they scare long-tailed ducks away from dangerous gillnets. Hopefully, the bright colours and strange movements of the looming-eyes buoy will help save thousands of birds in future years. Brilliant!

BUTTERFLY BOOM 🦋
Perfect weather conditions have led to a kaleidoscope of winged colour in areas of north Queensland this week. Many different butterfly species have benefited from the long wet season this year - even rare species like the Ulysses butterfly, which many scientists thought was dying out, have been seen in higher numbers. Great news!

Good news!🙌🎉 We're here with some exciting Wednesday science news to blow away the mid-week blues. Let's go!

PLASTIC PROGRESS ♻️
📸Francesco Gallarotti
Scientists from the University of California have invented a way to make biodegradable plastics that break down in a few short weeks. Adding heat and water causes tiny proteins inside to consume the plastic particles, turning the material into compost! Amazing!

INGENUITY FLIES 🚁
🎨NASA/JPL-CalTech
The NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration to Mars has more exciting updates this week, as the tiny Ingenuity helicopter took to the skies for the first time. Filmed by the Perseverance rover, the helicopter first flew for just under a minute - not bad, considering it was programmed from about 293 million miles away!

FOOTPRINT FOUND 🦕
🎨Kaitoge
A tiny cat-sized stegosaurus is thought to be the owner of a 6cm footprint that was found last week. The 100-million-year-old fossil is the smallest stegosaur footprint known in the world, so scientists are eager to learn as much as possible about its historic owner.

News like this comes out every month in the Nat Geo Kids magazine with our 'Cool News' articles! But from here, that's all for this week - see you next Wednesday for more good news!✨

It's ! Every day is a great day to celebrate penguins, in our opinion, especially since these brilliant birds are so fun to learn about 🐧

Fun fact! While penguins have never mastered flight, and look awkward waddling about on land, they've no trouble with other forms of transport! They can swim at a stunning 15mph (more than double the speed of Olympic swimmers!) and some species can travel long distances on land by 'tobogganing' through the snow on their bellies ❄️
