SALGA urges government to remember "not only Mandela"

The chairperson of South African Local Government Association (SALGA), Thami Ntuli continues to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Nelson Madiba Mandela as he visited Ekhenana Old Age Home and a non profit organization called Scars Blessing Feeding Scheme in uMlazi South of Durban's KwaZulu Natal province, last week Tuesday to donate wheelchairs and groceries.

Nelson Mandela International Day is celebrated annually on July 18th in tribute to late Nelison Rolihlahla Mandela, a South African first democratic elected President.

“Mandela Day has become above feeding a man for a day but about teaching a man how to fish.

"SALGA is guided by the situation unfolding in the province of KZN, every township and small towns in the country in general, also the issue of young boys and girls who received an education not fit for modern society," Ntuli said.

He went to Ekhenana Old Age Home same day where he donated seven (7) wheelchairs to the elderly and renovated bathrooms.

He also identified land to be donated for a youth center and tools gardening income generating project.

“Young girls suffer the indignity of buying sanitary towels yet other essential health products are freely accessible in the clinics,” he said.

"Only 43% of children under five years old are exposed to early childhood," added Ntuli.

During his speech, SALGA leader wished a speedy recovery to the statesman Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi and urged the government of South Africa "to also remember sacrifices of other leaders who are not Mandela."

The founder of NPO Scars, Blessing Themba Nzimande (29) who provides daily hot meal to the community surrounding uMlazi N section, expressed his feelings for benefiting from SALGA after receiving groceries and machines.

“The feeding scheme primarily cater for children, elderly, persons with disabilities and the homeless from surrounding communities.

"SALGA gave us groceries, grass cutting machines as well as garden tools, and I would like to appreciate what they did for us as the youth of Scars and Blessings Feeding Scheme scheme.

"There are a lot of job opportunities that we will create with the tools we received and we will continue to provide our beneficiaries with side hustles of cutting grass, gardening and cleaning roofs,” Nzimande explained.

Gary Paton takes Secret Saturdays to next level

A MUSICIAN FROM East London, Gary Paton who is into advertising has decided to open a new level of an intimate set up for people to enjoy.

Paton who has partnered with Gonubie Hotel to open The Deck with his company Sweat Shop which has a Secret Saturdays project under it said, “we hosted events in East London for the past seven years and we wanted to create something a bit more intimate.”

He stated that the Gonubie Hotel is a client of his digital marketing company called Pixel and they have partnered up to open The Deck.

"Gonubie Hotel is well established and years ago upstairs there used to be an advert called The Deck, that had been closed for several years.

"One of the owners approached me to put something together to open the setting and I decided to take the opportunity and use my brand Secret Saturdays," he explained.

Paton told NTU NEWS that “the whole idea of this is to bring people together from various different backgrounds and places and give them a place to have fun.”

Meanwhile, they opened on the 29th of July, and Paton explained that Jameson is on board "so a cocktail bar with Jameson drinks will be available."

According to him, while the business os still starting, there is high hope that the business will open full time.
