SUSPECT ARRESTED FOR BYPASSING ELECTRICITY METER

The Govan Mbeki Municipality wishes to commend the patrol security guards and SAPS for the swift action that led to the arrest of a suspect who was found bypassing an electricity smart meter in Evander on Saturday, 16 March 2023.

The suspect is a former contractor employee of an active metering installation company.

He was caught working at the municipal infrastructure by the patrol security guards wearing a municipal PPE bridging for the community.

The suspect is expected to appear at the Evander Magistrate's Court on Monday, 18 March 2024.

The municipality urges communities to refrain from tampering with electricity infrastructure by paying people to bypassing their meters.

This may result in criminal charges being laid against an offender.

Offenders will have to pay a reconnection fee penalty when they apply for reconnection, depending on the seriousness of the offence.

If reoccurrence happens, a removal of infrastructure permanently will occur.

The municipal has put measures in place to prevent illegal connections and tracking down illegal connections.
