Guys we feel you. So many people have asked us how to beat Instagram's latest algorithm.

There are no hard and fast rules but below are some suggestions:

You may have noticed that your likes have decreased a lot lately as Instagram no longer sees likes as carrying much clout. Engagements like comments, shares, saves and video views are becoming all important.

For feed posts, it's important to generate engagements beyond likes so keep this in mind when planning content. Use interactive captions with a clear call to action on your posts.

Encourage more interactions in stories with stickers like polls and questions.

Use hashtags but have a strategy. has an amazing feature called hashtag suggestions which will help you find relevant and popular hashtags for your posts.

Check your insights regularly to see what's working and tweak content accordingly. Having a content strategy is great, but if it isn't working, test your content until you find your sweet spot.

These are just a few simple suggestions that you can start implementing but chat to us if you need more help. We want to see you win!

We really loved working on this project with Reiner Swanepoel Graphic Design for Rhodes University's student recruitment campaign. Our main objective was to demonstrate that Rhodes University is not an average university, but an institution that believes in the endless power of possibility.

The latest in Insta tips, and what NOT to do.

Instagram has come a long way since it’s inception in 2010. Offering more than just a platform to share photographs and “network”, Insta now offers various spaces that can help entrepreneurs thrive. You can now grow your network, channel sales and leads funnels more efficiently, market directly to your audience, as well as, engage and educate your customer base on a personal level.

With all of these options on offer, we’ve found that many small businesses still struggle with Instagram marketing or taking advantage of these offers. And with the algorithms changing constantly managing a business profile can be tricky. That's why we’ve cut it short by sharing with you the latest in Insta tips and what not to do in 2020

1. Stay authentic, ditch the bots.
Users are looking for authenticity which is why buying “likes”, “followers” and using bots went out of fashion as quickly as it appeared. Be authentic and ditch the bots. Show people who you are, and what your brand stands for.

2. Forget automation, it’s not worth it.
Automated apps look attractive and lure you in with the promise of “saving time”, but what you may not know is that authentic interaction happens in real-time. By using automation you lose the “personal approach” (Exceptions to the rule apply)

3.Remember your hashtags, use them correctly.
Hashtags are still the best way to generate organic traffic, only when used right. Stay true to your niche and use relevant hashtags to attract more traffic to your page.

4. Don’t worry about the feed, it’s about the content.
Content is king. It won’t matter if you’re sticking to a colour-coded gradient if your content isn’t relevant to your audience. Remember this before ordering a preset.

These are but four key aspects to keep in mind before posting, but before you do, always remember, Instagram isn't the magic, you are.

There’s no denying that the past few weeks have proven taxing on our minds, bodies and day-to-day work culture. ⠀

At VibeTrybe we know that small businesses are the lifeblood of our communities and employ hundreds of South Africans across the country. Last week we spoke about the stances that social media have taken towards social change. This week we’re focusing on helping you better use these spaces because we know that small business owners help more than just themselves. These are the latest in social media updates that you could use to help you on your journey.⠀

1.Instagram Shop: ⠀

This lets you integrate your product catalogue with your profile and allows you to promote your products directly to users through posts, and now a special Shop tab.⠀

2. Tik Tok Launches “Tik Tok for Business” platform for marketers.⠀

While still in its beginning stages, this is a platform to keep an eye on, it will give you the opportunity to inspire others, be discovered and connect meaningfully with your audience.⠀

3. Youtube moves to the testing phase for its Tik Tok like “shorts” option.⠀

If yours is a more visual product then this is an option you could use in the long run. Video has proven to be king and is easier to consume.⠀

4. IGTV Ads for Monetization⠀

Short video ads will appear when users click to watch someone’s IGTV video (Great for influencers, they get paid, great for you, you can advertise on IGTV)⠀

5. LinkedIn stories: though this hasn’t fully launched in SA yet, it’s one to keep an eye out for. With it, you’ll be able to share images and short videos of your everyday professional moments with your audience. ⠀

6. YouTube Launches 'How YouTube Works', a platform that shares information on policies and how they’re implemented. When you know better you do better. ⠀
⠀⠀
While these updates may take a while to roll out(with the exception of the first), they’re all updates and innovations that you could use in the long run to produce quality content and encourage audience engagement which goes a long way in the sales funnel. We hope they help. If you have any questions, you know what to do.

Social Media’s Social Activism:⠀

Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen numerous brands stand up and pledge solidarity in the fight against racial discrimination and inequality. Being a digital marketing agency we’ve kept a close eye on what social network companies are doing in this regard. While we’re still a long way from achieving true resolve here are the small steps they are taking:⠀

Twitter has taken down hundreds of groups under their violent extremist group policy and enforced policies against hateful conduct across the world. The CEO announced they allocated several new grants via the initiative to programs designed to address racial inequality.⠀

Instagram has taken measures to improve policies towards racial inequality and has added rainbow hashtags and new features for this Pride Month.⠀

Facebook is said to have removed over 200 accounts associated with hate speech and announced it would spend $200 million to support black-owned businesses and organizations.⠀

LinkedIn has also made a series of courses on diversity and inclusion available for free.⠀

YouTube has also added its support, while additionally pledging $1 million in funding to support organizations seeking to address injustice.⠀

TikTok has committed to establishing a new creator diversity council, while it's allocating $3 million from its $250 million COVID-19 relief fund to non-profits that help the Black community.⠀

Pinterest is donating 25k shares of stock to: "...organizations committed to racial justice and promoting tolerance" and additionally committed $250,000 to help rebuild local businesses damaged in the protests with a further $750,000 in paid media to organizations that support racial justice.⠀

While it may appear that these platforms are “putting their money where their mouths are”, it will be interesting to see the long term results these pledges yield in the long run.

10 social media content ideas to keep things interesting.⠀

1. Snackable video content (Video reigns supreme so jump on this bandwagon.) Your video content doesn't have to be perfect, you can create amazing videos with your phone. Keep it short and simple. ⠀

2. Share, regram or retweet content from other sources. Let your fans do the talking or share interesting content from other brands. You don't have to only share content that you own, it's better to be part of the conversation. ⠀

3. Ask questions. Launching a new product? Why not ask your fans for feedback and post a series of questions. This info can help you to tweak your product offering according to what your customers want.⠀

4. Host a giveaway. Always a winner, competitions are a great way to engage new and existing audiences.⠀

5. Humanize your brand by showing off your team and the people behind your logo.⠀

6. Host a social media takeover. Partner with creators/ influencers and hand them the keys to your kingdom for a day or 2. This injects a fresh dynamic to your everyday content and gets you the exposure you need from partnering with bigger accounts.⠀

7. Collaborate. Consider partnering with other brands to get exposure to each other's audiences. Pick brands that fit well with yours and not a competitor. Eg. If you sell coffee partner with a bagle company and host a giveaway.⠀

8. Behind the scenes. Fans love to see what their favorite brands get up to behind the scenes. Share your office antics or WFH fails to amuse your followers and show them your personality.⠀

9. Client testimonials. Because what your fans say about you will always speak louder than what you say about you.⠀

10. Tap into trending topics. Understanding what's trending in your industry, allows you to create highly shareable content that can be utilized to bolster your brand as a leader in your industry.

There are a ton more social media ideas to fill your calendar with but these are just some of our favorites.

Let us know in the comments below what has worked for you.. ^_^

If anything this past week has taught us, it's that silence can be deafening and that it is no longer an option. We believe that not speaking against injustice has the same implications as advocating for it. That is why we are using our platform to say enough – and no more.
As we remember the thousands of victims of police brutality here and abroad, we advocate that you do the same too.

We truly hope that you continue to have the conversations you've been a part of online in your homes, offices and with your friends in memory of those who no longer can speak for themselves.

And then? Seek that those who oppress are brought to book, whether they're dressed in a blue uniform, running shoes, or suit and tie.
We know that injustices don’t end overnight, but we also know that this is a collective battle, not a singular fight.

We advocate that you use your voice wherever you can, whenever you can, whether in solidarity or as an ally because collectively we can do so much more than we can, divided.

The key to social media is relationship.

One of the biggest mistakes we often see businesses make, is that they hard sell like crazy. 90% of their posts are promotional and they use social media predominantly as a sales tool. That isn't wrong in itself, but along with promotion, brands need to show value. People are tired of being sold to day in and day out. What we've learned in this industry is that people support brands they believe in, brands who show value, brands who stand for something and who treat them like the valuable customer they are. If you are ticking those boxes, you can be rest assured that faced with a choice, your target audiences will rather support you than your competition.

Cultivate relationship with your customers to create loyal brand communities that will not only drive your bottom line, but will keep your existing customers coming back, over and over again. 📷

Are you a small business owner? Confused with all the lingo about pivoting and adaptibility that's being thrown around during this time.

It's difficult enough to navigate an unknown landscape and with the added pressure of keeping your business going, it's not an easy time. Ask us something that you would like to know about staying relevant in a digital space. You can send us a message or comment below.

We know that this is a very trying time for most, and uncertain too – that’s why we’d like to help ease a little bit of your load and help you find shortcuts wherever possible, and why today’s listicle is dedicated to helping you (or your small business) smarter and not harder.
1.Keep communication channels open:
Always be sure to keep the lines of communication open, whether it be with your team, through Zoom/Slack/ G-chat or Whatsapp, or your clients through Social.

2.Make sure you can be found online:
And that you’re not lost in the belly of the internet. Consider using long-tail key-words when working with SEO, use location tags and Google business pages. These are all very good ways to increase web visibility

3.If it’s within the realms of possibility, consider online ads:
During this time, a majority of South African’s are spending hours of their time online, and if your product or service is something that will be of assistance, then online ads will service both you and your clients.

4. Stay ahead of your competition:
Take this time to learn about the changing demands of your clients and how you could better serve them.

5. Use this time to be creative.
Creativity gives our minds a break from the stresses of our circumstances and is a great source of inspiration for new ideas. When you allow your mind to wonder beyond the box you're constantly thinking in, you create room for new neural pathways that lead to better problem solving skills. So get your paint, knitting needles or pen and paper and start creating.

6. Finish your digital to-do lists:
Now that you may have more time on your hands, use it wisely. Update your Instagram, your phonebook or your mailing list. Fix your email signature, get that website up and running. The list is endless because digital is always changing.

And action!
We’re finally live!

Officially with a website that is. Very few things can match the excitement of ticking-off items from your small business to-do list, and for us, our website was one of those things. We know what you’re thinking; a digital marketing agency without a website for so long? How did they manage? To which the answer is; many years of experience in the industry have gone a long way, as have lots of hard work, determination and copious amounts of support. We always joked that it was the story of the mechanic with the broken-down car; how he always works to put his clients needs first which meant he was at the very end.

If that isn’t telling of how busy we’ve been and our inclination towards attention to detail, we aren’t quite sure anything else will.

So, celebrate with us the launch of our website which is no longer; “coming soon”, but is already here!

Go ahead and share with us (if you’re not too shy that is) some of the more exciting moments your small business has had over the last 6 weeks. Whether it's finally receiving your embossed business card, or launching a Facebook group and running your very first ad, we love hearing from you, because we believe that life, after all, is better experienced together .

Hey, it’s OK to stalk yourself 😉

Gone are the days when stalking was considered weird, in fact, are you even normal if you don’t do a background check on the places you dine, the people you date, or the centres you shop? ( In a pre & post lockdown world, of course) If you’re doing it, it means your customers are doing it too.

Here is a list of places your buyers are looking for you, and are a great place to start if you’re thinking of levelling-up your strategy:
-They're checking out your social media presence; both personal, and business
-They're reading reviews on Facebook and Google- not just Hello Peter⠀
-They're looking at your website
-They're looking whether or not you’re on LinkedIn
-They're reading all of your content⠀(and checking for those typos too)
-They’re also looking whether you’re engaging with your clientele
- Last but not least, they’re looking at social tags, and if anyone they know has interacted with your brand

These are some of the first things we consider before we onboard new clients. We look for them in all the places their customer base would, and make recommendations based on the intel. Now that you may have a bit more time on your hands now would be a great time to stalk yourself.

We truly hope you’ve been fortunate enough to spend the last few weeks with loved ones during this period. If not, we hope you’ve been surrounded by people who’ve been there to encourage you, even virtually, through this journey.

While measures have been implemented and precautions are taken for our physical well-being; we encourage you to keep hope alive because it is the one thing keeping us going. We advocate for you to encourage each other in all that you do, and continue to be as courageous as you are.

Always remember we are here to serve you, and if you have any questions for us or any concepts you find confusing, anything you feel you need help or assistance with along your digital journey, please feel free to hop into our comments below, or send us a DM.

06/04/2020

Working from home may have been a luxury afforded to very few, up until the national (and somewhat international lockdown) that is.

Today? A large majority of us have taken to working from home.

For those not so accustomed to this way of life – which in some ways seem like an even longer day at the office– we’ve compiled a list of ways you (and your small business/network) can stay relevant even while working remotely.
We’ve also included one or two helpful hints on how to keep sane these 21 days.

✅ Get, or update your social media: this goes without saying, an updated Facebook/ Instagram or LinkedIn account goes a long way in keeping relevant in these fast changing times.

✅ Use Online Collaboration Tools-Trello/ Slack/GDrive, whatever you prefer as a medium to share work seamlessly without having to send endless emails.

✅ Hold Regular Meetings: (virtually of course). This will ensure whole teams are on the same page constantly

✅ Set Reminders on your Calendar: The home brain forgets so easily! We’re not even sure why.

✅ Make regular lunch/ video chat plans- This one is to help you keep your sanity.

✅ Upskill. Try online courses and live events; to meet people, learn new skills, or for sheer enjoyment.

✅ Dedicate family time: This again is for your personal sanity

✅ Step outside every now and again: Take a deep breath of fresh air, even if it means you have to lean outside your kitchen window to do it. Trust us, this helps.

✅ Last but not least: Make some time for you – you are after all, your most important asset.

Long as this list may be, we swear by every one of these items, as they have gone a long way in helping us stay relevant in a very fast-moving landscape.

03/04/2020

As you may well already know, listicles are our thing. In fact, we’d say this is where we thrive. On today's list? We’re sharing the importance of a human connection/storytelling and how it can benefit your branding journey.

People no longer just buy things, they buy into ideas, values, and shop according to what aligns with their moral code. Don’t believe it? Consider the recent rise in ethical shopping, the organic trade industry and, of course, the decades long success of Apple.

So, how do you create connections with your audience and tell the cohesive narrative that your brand evokes? We’re glad you asked!

Tell your story: In addition to giving your customers reasons why they should buy a product or service, you need to start sharing the story behind why it exists, why you matter, and you should do this consistently with all communication

Be memorable: This one speaks for itself. In a sea of boredom dare to be the island of excitement! Be a little different, and that in itself will render you memorable

Be candid: When telling your story don’t be afraid to go behind the scenes and show your customers your creation journey. There’s a reason why the hit TV show “how it’s made” has over 400 episodes in its repertoire, people are curious beings.

Show you care: You wouldn’t have started this journey if you didn’t right? So go ahead, show your customers you care

Share your journey: Not just the destination points. Share your milestones, share your wins and share some losses all of these things work towards helping you build a better community

With these 5 steps we encourage you to go forth, and conquer!

Can you run whole businesses remotely? And if a cable in the ocean snaps, causing your internet to be slower than usual, or (worst case scenario) non existent, can you still run your business from your phone?

Over the last two weeks we’ve been pushed to answer these very questions ourselves and have found that with the right apps, yes, we can... (even with the suspiciously slow levels of internet connection). These are the apps we simply couldn’t live without during these tough times:

Trello
Hootsuite
Zoom Video Communications

Hop into our comments section and let us know what your must-have apps are.

30/03/2020

There's no denying that content reigns supreme, even during this time of uncertainty. In fact, if we were to reconstruct Maslow's pyramid into a hierarchy of digital marketing; content would be the first block. Why? Apart from the millions of people around the globe who are spending hours of their time online; giving you a larger core audience, communicating brand identity and values remain very important.

With our hearts set on helping small businesses transition into this new era, we’ve compiled a shortlist of reasons why content marketing matters now more than ever. Hopefully, it will help you further consider why you need a content marketing strategy, and how it could help you in the long run:

1. It’s the key component of all your current communication:
Billboards, pamphlets, roadshows, festivals, farmers markets, conferences and daily meetings are a thing of the past-ish for the next 3 weeks at least). Where else would potential customers, and suppliers receive key communication pertaining to your brand except directly from you? Cancelled events mean there’s a greater need for you to double up on communication, not only to remain consistent but so that your audience remembers who you are and what you stand for.

2. It allows for direct communication with your clients: No more using “what we meant to say was”, or “this campaign just doesn’t speak of what we stand for a brand” as an excuse. That’s because you'll be the driving force behind all communication. Whether you choose to blog, use LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok or mailers; you now have full reign over the communication that your clients receive. It is your job to make sure that it’s clear.

3.It’s still a great way to generate leads: Done well, this could be a great way to lead potential consumers through the buyers funnel. Not only will you be building rapport with your clients and creating community with them( breaking bread so to speak), but you’ll have direct access to the lead generating process and won’t necessarily be relying on call centers, or third and fourth parties to generate leads for you because you’ll be able to do it yourself.

4.It gets people talking & spreads like wildfire Remember that viral video you tagged your friend in? Or that lovely blog forwarded to the group chat? You do, do you? Now imagine that it was your brand, service or product. That’s how easily ideas and content spread, and now more than ever, with people spending more time online than not, content is spreading ever the faster.

5 It Lengthens the Customer Journey:
Gone are the days when the customer journey began and ended with a purchase. Now that we consider returning customers just as valuable (even more so) as entry-level customers, making sure they're always happy should be at the top of your list. And what better way to keep them in the loop with than through your communication channels? We couldn't have one either.

Now that you know that you're aware of why content marketing is important shall we walk you through how to do it effectively?

Be sure to check-in throughout the week as we'll continue sharing helpful tips.

Til next time,

We promised we’d be walking you through some best practises for small businesses during this time of uncertainty and here they are:

1. Video continues its reign – if you didn't believe “video is king” before, we hope you do now. With streaming & video services like Netflix, TikTok and Youtube recording all-time highs, now would be as good a time as any to venture into video.

Own a gym? Opt for an at-home training program posted on Youtube. Restauranteur? Film and share “cook with me videos” featuring one or two signature dishes. Whatever your product or service is, there’s a chance it can be translated into online video over the next two weeks.

2. Consider setting aside an ad budget: Ads on FB/ Insta are essential during this time to stay top of mind and grow brand awareness. So if it’s within the realms of possibility now would be the time to pursue it. If you’re in the property or real estate market consider setting aside a budget to better help you generate leads for when it's back to business as usual.

3. Create a community: At this time; the sole purpose for small businesses shouldn’t be just to generate sales but to create genuine connections with their communities. Sometimes the best way to create something great is to do it with people who already care about your product or service. As the age-old African proverb says; “If you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to far, go together”

4. Retain Relationship: You did well to create a community, but now, don’t stop engaging. Use this time to talk to your customers, find out what they like, what they don’t, and how you can alter your approach to better accommodate them.

Now that you know how to better curate your engagement. Go forth and conquer!
