STATEMENT OF THE UNISA EFFSC EASTERN CAPE MEDIA OFFICER AND EFFSC LED EASTERN CAPE REGIONAL SRC

Revolutionary greetings Sons and Daughters of Mama Winnie and Tata Chris Hani, we hope this finds you well in these trying times.

We acknowledge the hardship students go through day to day basis.

The EFFSC Led RSRC has a role to play in the struggle faced students. It champions the interests of all Students, as this is significant in the struggle against the institution policies. The EFFSC Led RSRC has mobilized and rallied behind creating conducive facilities for studying and research excellence.

Our institution is one of the biggest establishment that continues excluding students, even those who are already in the pipeline of their establishment.

Meetings continue being conducted but results are the same. This act shows that the university is not willing to listen to the grievances of the students and take them into consideration.

The following burning issues have been raised but some continue to bare no fruitful outcomes, the EFFSC Led RSRC was part of the meeting that sat on 19/04/2021 with other RSRC and the Regional management committee of the Eastern Cape Region.
The following are issues that were raised

•Admission of HC students
•Reopening cashier payments
•Online tutorials for high risk modules
Students monthly data
•Reopening of campus : labs, study are and library.
•Provision of learning materials to support online learning

*RESOLUTIONS*

•OFFERS
Students who completed Higher Certificate and applied for proposed qualifications are declined access as the university is oversubscribed and offers are not dealt with, in the regional level therfore, it is out of demarcated area for RSRC.

•TUTORIAL PROGRAMS
Program to assist students with high risks modules has commenced but this program won't benefit all students as it requires data, network connection and electronic devices. Students do not have that support to acquire electronic devices.

Register on the Unisa booking app to book a spot before you visit one of Unisa’s campuses or centres
The Unisa campus access booking app, which is web-based and can be accessed via a browser or phone, is now available at http://www.unisa.ac.za/access

1. You must first register as a user. Click on "Sign Up" and follow the instructions. You must register with your myLife e-mail account and a password of your choice (ie you do not simply log in with your current Unisa credentials).

2. Once you have registered, a "New Unisa access registration" e-mail will be sent to your myLife e- account. Verify your registration and then click on "Sign In" to book a visit to a Unisa campus.

3. Once you have registered, you can sign-in using the first tab ("Sign In").

Please note the following:
• From Tuesday 29 September 2020, you will need to use this system if you want to visit the Science Campus or Sunnyside Campus. Booking access to other campuses and regional offices will be opened in the next week or two.
• A booking is specific to a campus and building in one of two time slots: 08:00-12:00 or 13:00-17:00.
• There is a limit of 150 students per time slot and building.
• When you make a booking, you must confirm that you do not have any Covid-19 symptoms at the time of booking. For this reason, a booking can only be done a day in advance.

Good day UNISAN

While this might be long, please give yourself sometime to go through all of it to understand where we come from.

Recent developments suggest that the University of South Africa might be taking a position to go fully online and while we acknowledge this as a progressive move for an ODeL institution, we are of the view that the University does not have just yet the capacity to fully achieve this without compromising the students and putting into jeopardy our qualifications.

The sudden shift by the University is influenced greatly by the decision of the Minister to appoint a Ministerial Task Team to look into Unisa under the theme "Too big to fail", this has forced Unisa to take extreme decisions under pressure to prove to the Minister and his task team that everything is fine at UNISA and we reject this.

As student leaders, we have over years taken many struggles including our longest standing being the fight for equal treatment of Unisa students with other full time institutions, this has been informed by the high levels of dropout of young people who cannot cope with Unisa because of lack of support.
The University in an attempt to meet us somewhat halfway has over the years introduced some services to assist with our concerns, the University agreed to offer face to face tutorial support for high risk modules on campus, the University built and expanded computer labs across all 8 regions of Unisa, the University invested in study facilities and to an extent allows upon arrangements with student leadership to open some study Centres 24/7 during times identified as critical.

The shift by the University is a set back that stands to nullify all progress made by student leadership in an attempt to make Unisa the University of first choice for thousands of poor young people hungry for education and opportunities. We have over the years argued for Unisa students to receive some allowances that they are excluded from including transport allowances, fo

Students currently completing qualifications this semester and who wish to study further, now is your time to Apply for your 2021 Qualifications, indicate that you are in the process of completing another qualification on your application, this includes students completing Higher Certificates in October/November 2020.

Let's spread this to avoid students who will say they did not cone January 2021.

Also please note to check carefully the requirements of what you apply for, we have in the past witnessed cases of students completing Higher Certificates in different UNISA colleges and wanting to apply in others e.g HC in Law but want to study Education, let's not do that this time.

Each faculty has its own higher certificate to make you qualify for the relevant qualification.
