A video I shot a while ago from my first floor flat it Solihull, Birmingham. I was bringing out my inner David!
Whalebone Pier Sunrise
Its getting alot easier to get up in time to get these sunrises. I am lucky enough to live near this spectacular pier in Umhlanga, near Durban.🙂 I love timelapses, they give you a different perspective on what is happening, by speeding up time and letting you see things you wouldn't see otherwise. In this one, I was hoping to see the changing light and patterns of the clouds, sun and sky, but it didn't come out as expected. But I enjoyed seeing all the walkers and runners scuttling past!
Clayden the Artist
I directed and shot this insert for Okuhle Films earlier this year for a show called Activated for SABC 2, a great project to work on. Claydon is a great artist, an inspiration to us all!
We went to the Kamberg recently, during a very cold snap. Although the mountains had recently been burned, the ground was sodden from the previous night's icy rain. The moment the sun peeked out from behind the clouds, the heat from the sun's rays was sucked up by the cold, wet earth, and streams of mist rose from the ground, like the ghost of the fire that had ravaged it recently.
When time doesn't stand still
I love timelapses, where the seemingly static as actually moving and changing dramatically if you change the time- scale, its just a matter of perspective. Here are some of the timelapses I have shot over the last couple of years,
I had the privilege of working on this Stomp Awards promo for Ocean Planet Media, with Billi-Jean Parker and Lynton Richards. The prevention of marine plastic pollution is a cause we should all get behind.
Swimming monkeys
Some monkeys came to visit and swim in our pool, even though its winter and the water was icy!
Busy, busy busy Umhlanga!
I have been doing a couple of timelapses recently and decided to make them into a video. Umhlanga is growing at a rate of knots and there are building cranes all over the place, with some interesting angles. Each clip takes about an hour to shoot, so you can see I have been pretty busy!
Dramatic Drakensburg
The Drakensburg is truly awe-inspiring! I had great fun last weekend doing a few timelapses of the clouds, in between hiking, talking, eating, drinking, vegging, etc.
Little yellow flower time-lapse
Had fun setting up a timelapse of a flower a couple of days ago. I love the details you see, when time is sped up, insects visiting, the stamens and petals opening and other details you can't see with the naked eye. We think of plants as static, but they are not, they just move at a differerent speed to us.
Mozambique Surf Trip
Paul, Verner and I went to Mozambique recently, so here is a little bit from our trip. It was great fun shooting and editing this video!
Clouds in Umhlanga
Had fun doing this cloud time-lapse this morning. It took me about 40 minutes, sitting next to the road, while my camera took a photo every 4 seconds. When I got back I stitched them all together into a video file, which became the time-lapse. It was a bright, sunny morning, but because of the contrast, it looks quite moody. I love seeing how the clouds move, there are distinct layers where different clouds do different things. The high clouds are frozen sheets of ice and lower clouds move at a different speed and direction. There is a standing cloud developing above the buildings which is caused by the wind hitting the buildings and being forced up. As the air rises, it expands, gets colder and when it hits dew point, the air vapour condenses from a gas to a liquid and forms clouds. Normally this is too slow to see, but the time lapse lets you see movement when all looks still with the naked eye. Fascinating!
