Asar, the time-honored deity who represents the ancestral past of Kemet and the inevitable denouement of mortal life. The great mythos that was honored here speaks of a time when Asar was the benevolent ruler of the human race, and one of the last demigods to live on Earth.Using Heliopolitan imagery, east is regarded as the place of renewal, and the quintessential Neter who embodies that principle is Asar.
In reading through many of the prayers and hymns of Egypt's sacred literature, it becomes apparent that the hope for life's continuance is addressed to Asar, god of both afterlife and renewal of the living. Yet this is not an indication that Asar possessed more of a following than the other Neteru. Rather, he was recognized as the exemplar of all mortals-even all sentient beings-who must eventually relinquish physical life and pass into the shadow worlds. As such, Asar's commemoration, experiences, and words are metaphors for our existence and should be viewed as such. The reassembly of Asar's body is thus a metaphor for the reconstitution of the identity and functions of the individual on the spiritual plane.
PRINCIPLE: RENEWAL
Asar restores what has been destroyed, dismantled, or weakened. He represents new beginnings, new life, and second chances.
FUNCTION: GERMINATION
This Neter awakens the innate creative impulses in all living things. He permits the force to reappear and restore vigour, appreciation for life, and healing when it may have been obstructed or blocked.
ZODIACS ♈
In the season of Aries, the winter's hibernation has passed and the carnal body becomes the seed for the body of light. In ancient Egypt, this coincided with the return of the constellation Orion in the east at dawn, signaling the return of Asar, bringer of renewal and the vital power for a season of rejuvenation. The body of light is born in the celestial realm.
ASSOCIATION WITH THE SUN ☀️
The Solar passage through the constellations along the ecliptical belt of the sky throughout the tropical year, beginning at the spring equinox, when night and day are equal in length, and symbolically, when body and soul are in balance between the visible and invisible worlds. In ancient times this period coincided with the return of the constellation Orion in the night sky, a harbinger of the powers of Asar becoming renewed.
ASSOCIATION WITH THE MOON 🌕
Though most cultures, including the Egyptian, viewed the Lunar rhythm as feminine in nature, the Lunar cycle of growth and diminishment is uniquely embodied in the saga of the Heliopolitan' god Asar, a deity closely associated with the variable faces of the Moon. Egyptian legend tells that as first regent of Egypt in the mists of antiquity, Asar-along with his faithful sister-consort Auset-brought order and civilization to Egypt. However, the universal affection of Asar by all brought deep jealousy from his brother, Set. As a result, he became the victim of a number of nefarious acts, which ended in his murder and dismemberment into fourteen pieces by Set and his confederates. However, Asar was magically restored through the intervention of the gods and the magic of Auset. With his life renewed, he became governor of the shadow worlds-the vast, invisible regions beyond the material world where all ancestral souls reside. Consequently; it was believed that all return to the realm of this deity when physical life comes to an end.
The astronomical rhythm of the Moon is woven into this myth, from the reassembly of Asar's fourteen members-by Auset and their sister, Nebt-Het-to the Lunar eclipse following his demise that signaled the ascendancy of Set. Most importantly, Asar assumes the pulse of the Lunar principle in nature, as the function of reoccurrence in the life cycle and the power of transcendence. For even though the Moon is subject to waning and waxing light by virtue of its variable course, its repetitious return defeats the forces of dissolution by promising continued renewal. Thus Asar defeated Set by becoming whole and entering a realm beyond the temporal powers in nature.
In Egyptian ceremony, the diminishment of Asar's power and its return is observed throughout the Lunar cycle. At the New Moon his reappearance is celebrated, and at the Full Moon his restoration is commemorated. Following this, his dismemberment is solemnized, concluding with a rite of mourning and non-activity in the dark period before the next New Moon when his life returns. Throughout this cycle, Lunar ceremonies usually take the form of material offerings, acts of "feeding" that magically restore the Neter's waning powers until they return.
