Podium.Zone is a virtual platform for exhibiting and sharing content from the youth cultures of different neighborhoods around the world. The Website consists of a map, which allows the tagging of content to the area where it was recorded, including videos, sound and pictures. They capture a moment in Soweto and are not limited by any theme; any content recorded in Soweto represents the Sowetan da
ily life. The aim of this project is to motivate the members of the community to use their public space and reinvent it in such a way that it gives back value to the community. At the same time it makes the community aware of the role they can play in their own society by changing their own perception of their daily life. As well as expanding their vision to bigger platforms which make them visible to others, to get more eyes and ears on their stories. Content will be collected and the best captions are going to be part of a documentary movie called: THE PODIUM ZONE SOWETO. Four moderators from Soweto have been chosen to research and interview people from the area (artists and other young individuals) who are contributing to the culture of Soweto through their own innovative inputs. Contributions to the platform will be launched on the 20th September 2014, the content will be collected till the 31th of October. The documentary should create a wider picture of the Sowetan Youth Scene and capture new subcultures. It gives value to works of young artist from the area and works on changing the perception of outsiders and insiders of the area. The documentary will be screened the first time at THE PODIUM ZONE SOWETO FESTIVAL“ which is going to take place in Orlando East, Letsatsi Street, on a plot which was previously revived from a dumping zone to a community space. The festival gives the community the opportunity to celebrate and reinvade the space in the name of Art. The festival is planned on the 29th of November 2014, 12pm daytime festival with free entry for the community at large. We hope for it to become an annual event at the same area.
