Vodacom and DHL Stormers bring holiday hope to The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital

In a Vodacom United Rugby Championship season where a missed kick or a disallowed try can seem like something all-important, a visit by Vodacom and the DHL Stormers to The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town on Wednesday quickly put all of that into perspective.

DHL Stormers coach John Dobson and a huge contingent of his players joined Vodacom in showing their appreciation for the fact there are some battles far bigger than those that happen on a rugby field, and some heroes far braver than those making the hardest tackles.

It was no ordinary visit to a place described as “no ordinary hospital”, which annually takes care of approximately 250 000 patients from the Western Cape and beyond and with some of them less than a year old.

It was a memorable day capped by a significant R100 000 donation by Vodacom to the Children’s Hospital Trust and the important work it continues to do in advancing child healthcare.

But it was also a day when it was the turn of the heroes of the Vodacom United Rugby Championship to be inspired.

“It’s impossible to put into words what a visit like this means to us as a team. The core of our belief as a team is that we’re here to make Cape Town smile with what we do on the rugby field. But it’s hard for us and our players to come here and spend time with these brave children, and not leave inspired ourselves by their absolute courage in the face of the kind of obstacles we’ll never ever encounter on the rugby field. A visit like this, thanks to Vodacom, is so important for us as a team to keep that perspective and remember exactly why we work hard and who we’re playing for,” said DHL Stormers coach, John Dobson.

As the players spent time with the children, Vodacom also handed out blankets, bucket hats, pencil cases with stationery, hygiene products and drawstring bags.

“We’re a company defined by our purpose, which is to support the communities who support us. It’s a privilege for us, especially at this time of the year, to be able to partner with the DHL Stormers and hopefully bring a smile to without a doubt the bravest supporters we have in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship. And to also pay tribute to the staff of The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital who work tirelessly to be the support these children and their families so desperately need,” said Michelle van Eyden, Head of Marketing for Vodacom.

Chantel Cooper, CEO of the Children’s Hospital Trust, was overwhelmed by the show of support.

“For children in hospital, meeting sporting heroes can be a powerful and uplifting experience, offering a break from their daily challenges and creating unforgettable moments of happiness. It also provides a sense of connection, showing them that they are seen, valued, and supported. Having the DHL Stormers coach and players take the time to personally visit us also provides a much-needed boost for our healthcare workers after a tough year. Their visit means so much to all involved with the hospital. On behalf of all of us at the hospital, I cannot express how grateful we are to Vodacom for making this happen, and to the DHL Stormers for showing up in such numbers in support.”

Schwartzel adds to star-studded field for Alfred Dunhill Championship

Charl Schwartzel has confirmed he will return to Leopard Creek this month in search of a record fifth Alfred Dunhill Championship title, adding his name to a glittering array of stars that will walk the fairways of South Africa’s number one ranked golf course from 12-15 December.

The 2011 Masters champion will join defending champion Louis Oosthuizen in a field that includes eight of the last 13 champions of the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek along with Ockie Strydom, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Pablo Larrazabal, Brandon Stone, Richard Sterne and Alvaro Quiros.

PGA Tour winners Erik van Rooyen and Dylan Frittelli as well as multiple DP World Tour champions Thriston Lawrence and Dean Burmester, and rising star Aldrich Potgieter, who has just secured his PGA Tour card for the new season, add to the impressive line-up this year.

The 20-year-old Chinese sensation Wenyi Ding will make his debut in the Alfred Dunhill Championship.

And South Africa’s Altin van der Merwe returns to Leopard Creek where he made history by becoming the first winner of the inaugural Africa Amateur Championship in February this year, after which he later turned professional.

But amongst them all, Schwartzel will be more motivated than ever to add to his already incredible history in this tournament and at this golf course.

Schwartzel already has four Alfred Dunhill Championship titles to his name and still owns the record tournament total of 24 under par and the biggest margin of victory of 12 strokes.

But perhaps even more significant is that he has now finished runner-up five times in this Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour co-sanctioned tournament. His most recent second place was last year when he pushed close friend Oosthuizen right until the final hole before finishing two strokes behind him.

“For me, growing up in South Africa and being privileged to grow up on a farm, I was around big space my whole life. I grew to love nature a lot. Our weekend getaways were always to the bushveld. Everybody has their place they go where they get that calming effect and where you feel like you’re alone in the world. To me the bush does that to me. I love the sounds and the smells. It gives me a lot of peace,” said Schwartzel.

“So that’s why Leopard Creek is so special to me. There is no setting like it in the world – to play golf on the edge of the Crocodile River and the Kruger National Park. It doesn’t get much better than that.”

Hard work paying off for Di**le in PGA Championship

ST FRANCIS LINKS, Eastern Cape – Wynand Di**le held onto his lead in the South African PGA Championship, sponsored by African Bank, at St Francis Links on Friday and heads into the weekend determined to put his intense hard work over the past few months to good use.

Di**le signed for a second round of 68 to lead the field on 11 under par. The son of the Karoo is one stroke clear of young star Barend Botha and multiple Sunshine Tour winner Rourke van der Spuy. Botha produced a magnificent 64 on Friday, while Van Der Spuy posted a 66.

Di**le has been here before in his career. He led the 2014 South African PGA Championship by three strokes going into the weekend. This time, he’s determined to use his experience and add his name to the illustrious list of champions in this tournament.

“My game feels good, the swing feels good, and I’m hitting the ball well,” he said.

“I’m putting well. I made a change to my putting grip a week ago and I feel confident. I’m looking forward to the weekend.”

But it’s the hours and hours of practice Di**le has put in which he feels is now showing the greatest reward.

“I’ve worked so hard over the past few months, and it’s beginning to pay back now. I worked on my putting in particular and took a bit of advice from here and there on this aspect of my game. So I feel good. This is such a prestigious tournament and there are so many great names on this trophy. I’d love to add mine to that list as well.”

Behind him, Botha is certainly showing his potential. He finished sixth in last week’s Vodacom Origins of Golf Final at Oubaai and is now firmly in contention going into the weekend at St Francis Links.

And JJ Senekal remains in contention as well just two shots off the lead on nine under par. Senekal’s second round of 68 was a morale booster for a professionals who’s battled his way back from injury. And clearly he’s drawing on the memories of returning to a St Francis Links course where he won his first Sunshine Tour event in 2013, and to an SA PGA Championship in which he finished third in 2014.

“It’s a good feeling and this is a place I like. I always play decent around here. The last year-and-a-half has been a challenging time with injury but I’ve fought through it. It’s a grind but we all know that and we’re all up for it. It’s part of the journey of where we want to get to. It’s an honour to be where I am right now and it would be an even greater honour to get my name on that trophy,” he said.

The South African PGA Championship is also proudly supported by the Eastern Cape Parks & Tourism Agency (ECPTA), the Sarah Baartman District Municipality, the Kouga Local Municipality, Momentum and Cape St Francis Resort.

Home favourite Burmester wins Vodacom Origins Final

GEORGE, Western Cape – There’s no place like home, and Dean Burmester certainly feels it.

Burmester’s return home to the Sunshine Tour this week saw him win the Vodacom Origins of Golf Final at Oubaai Golf Estate by seven strokes on Sunday, matching the second largest margin of victory in the history of this series. Jared Harvey owns the record for the largest margin of victory with his eight-stroke triumph in 2017.

“It’s just great to be back in South Africa playing golf and competing for trophies. I love South African golf,” said a delighted Burmester, who was surrounded by friends and family who watched him close with a 66 to win on 28 under par.

“It’s super special to win in front of so many friends and family. The South African hospitality is so special. The support we had and that super South African gees was just magnificent.”

Jean Hugo took second place on 21 under par with a closing 70.

Jacques Kruyswijk had an incredible final day as he surged up the leaderboard with a closing 62, including a back nine of 29, to finish third on 20 under par.

It was one of several magnificent rounds of golf on Sunday. Stefan Wears-Taylor put together a front nine of 29 on his way to a 63 that included four eagles for a total of 19 under par and a share of fourth place. And Branden Grace would’ve been delighted with his 63 to finish tied sixth on 18 under par.

But the final two rounds of this tournament were a battle between Burmester and Hugo. Having already built up a sizeable lead, Burmester could afford the two bogeys he made on 15 and 16 before finishing with two birdies, while Hugo double-bogeyed the 16th.

“I had a good battle with Jean (Hugo) over the last two days which was also fun,” said Burmester. “But this is what I grew up on – this kikuyu grass. It suits my game. And it was so special to have everybody out here watching. My family and I made the move to George from Bloemfontein about eight years ago and we’ve absolutely been embraced by this town.”

This is Burmester’s second victory on the Vodacom Origins of Golf series after his win in 2015.

“I’m going into my 16th year as a pro and this series has been going on for way longer. Vodacom have been supporting our Tour and supporting careers and families for so long. Long may their unwavering support of the Sunshine Tour continue,” he said.

Danielle du Toit finished as the leading Sunshine Ladies Tour professional in 20th place on 13 under par with a final round of 68. Gabrielle Venter closed with a 69 to finish on 12 under par, while Cara Gorlei also posted a 69 to end her week on four under par.

Burmester takes control in Vodacom Origins Final

GEORGE, Western Cape – Dean Burmester signed for a bogey-free 63 to earn himself a three-stroke lead going into Sunday’s final round of the Vodacom Origins of Golf Final at Oubaai Golf Estate.

On another magnificent day on the Garden Route, Burmester teed off the third round chasing the lead of Jean Hugo and immediately made an impact with his four birdies in his first five holes.

Playing the kind of relaxed golf of a man who feels completely at home in this part of the world, Burmester also birdied the last to give himself a chance at a second Vodacom Origins of Golf title in his career after his other win on the series in 2015.

“It’s nice to be home. It’s nice to see the fans come out and support a local boy,” said Burmester.

Burmester’s level of comfort was nowhere more evident than in his short game on Saturday. His putting was outstanding, and his chipping on the back nine in particular helped him to maintain his scoring momentum.

“I’ve got a caddie who’s reading these green unbelievably well. I had 10 putts on the back nine. My iron play is still a little bit rusty, but the rest of my game is sharp. I haven’t driven the ball this well in a long time, so that’s putting me in a good position to score,” said Burmester.

“I had a good up-and-down for par on 15 with the putt just dropping in. I also had two good up-and-downs for par on 16 and 17 where I could’ve quite easily come back to the field. I work very hard on my chipping. I have to give Branden Grace credit because he’s helped me a lot with that and not opening the face of the club too much and keeping it a little bit square, especially on those uphill lies. It’s paying dividends this week for sure.”

Hugo, who is chasing a record 13th Vodacom Origins of Golf title, also made a strong start with three birdies in his opening four holes. But he dropped two shots on the back nine.

It was also a good day for Stephen Ferreira who scored a hole-on-one on the par-three third hole, hitting an eight iron and earning himself 50 000 Skybucks from Airlink.

“It’s nice to get my second hole-in-one. I need to get a move on because my uncle has had 18. Hopefully I can get a few more. But it’s great from Airlink to give us those Skybucks.”

The Sunshine Ladies Tour challenge is led by Gabrielle Venter and Danielle du Toit on nine under par and in joint 25th place. Venter posted a 70 on Saturday, while Du Toit signed for a 69. Cara Gorlei carded a 73 to finish the round on one under par.

Hugo chasing more Vodacom Origins of Golf glory

GEORGE, Western Cape – Tiger Woods had the Arnold Palmer Invitational and his eight wins there. Jack Nicklaus had an affinity for The Masters with his six victories. Gary Player has his 13 Investec South African Open titles. And Jean Hugo has the Vodacom Origins of Golf series.

With his 12 victories in total, Hugo is the undisputed master of the longest running pro-am series of tournaments on the Sunshine Tour. His wins on this series alone account for over half of his career victories on the Sunshine Tour.

And at Oubaai Golf Estate on Friday, Hugo lined up victory number 13.

Hugo signed for a 64 to head the field on 16 under par overall heading into the weekend of this Vodacom Origins of Golf Final.

He is three strokes clear of Dean Burmester and Sean Bradley. Burmester produced a bogey-free 64, and Bradley signed for a 67.

Oliver Bekker, who led the first round, kept himself in contention on 12 under par overall with a 70 on Friday. And Daniel van Tonder, a two-time winner on the Sunshine Tour this year already, climbed to 10 under par with a 63.

The longevity of Hugo’s success on this Vodacom Origins of Golf series is put into perspective when you consider that his first win on the series in 2006 saw him beat Chris Williams, who is now campaigning on the senior circuit. That’s a year before the first iPhone came out.

Ruan Conradie produced some impressive scoring of his own with a 63 that included a front nine of 29, lifting him to seven under par overall.

The Sunshine Ladies Tour professionals put in a strong performance on Friday, with three of the four who are participating this week making it through to the weekend.

Gabrielle Venter leads this charge in tied 15th place on seven under par following a second round of 65. Danielle du Toit signed for a 67 to come through 36 holes on six under par, while Cara Gorlei is at two under par after a 73.
