Leader: Herman Mashaba

ActionSA, a breakaway of the DA, is led by the practical, principled, and straight-talking Herman Mashaba, the former (and one of the best) Mayor’s the City of Johannesburg ever had. His record and mayorship are still spoken about in high regard by many in the city.

•Although ActionSA is still considered a small, newer party – with its primary support coming from Gauteng – it has steadily been making gains across the country.

•In the 2021 local government elections, ActionSA shook things up and made history when it secured wins in traditional ANC stronghold districts, such as Soweto, despite being a one-year-old party at the time. The party has remained steadfast in its stance that it will never work with the ANC.

•Mashaba is undoubtedly ActionSA’s drawcard and although he may sometimes come across as a loose cannon, particularly when dealing with the media, you cannot discount his passion and drive to fix South Africa.

•Now more than ever, ActionSA, combined with its Multi-Party Coalition partners have the best chance of finally removing the ANC out of Gauteng.

Mashaba rightly realises that tired, political ideology is taking this country nowhere. Only action will move South Africa forward!

Patriotic Alliance (PA)

Leader: Gayton McKenzie

Gayton McKenzie, the ex-convict who shifted from being a hardened criminal to taking a harsh (some say even xenophobic) stance against foreigners, is undoubtedly one to watch in these upcoming elections.

•McKenzie’s PA is riding the wave on only one issue – illegal immigration/anti-illegal migrants. McKenzie and the PA, unlike many other political parties, took the prevailing sentiment against immigration and ran with it. It may be too much to stomach for some, but illegal immigration is a burning issue in South Africa and the PA, unapologetically, is using this subject to make inroads with voters and will most likely propel itself to Parliament on the back of this wave.

•So determined is McKenzie with his anti-immigration stance, that he once distastefully said if voted into power, he would go to hospitals and “switch off the life support” of every illegal foreigner and just recently he said the survivors of the George building collapse (most of whom are foreigners) should go and “get counselling in your own country”. It is one thing to be against illegal immigration and want to put your citizens first, it is another to completely lose your humanity and resort to such vitriolic hate and insensitivity in your desperate attempt to garner votes.

•McKenzie, who also fancies himself as a kingmaker, has shown that he will do anything for power, including betraying alliances he was in for self-interest.

But whether we like it or not, undoubtedly, the divisive McKenzie and PA train is moving and is giving a lot of the other parties a big headache ahead of these pivotal elections.

Rise Mzansi

Leader: Songezo Zibi

Songezo Zibi’s Rise Mzansi is a newcomer to the South African political scene, but it is already making waves, albeit slowly and measuredly. Zibi is an impressive man. He is sophisticated, dynamic and a breath of fresh air.

•He and his party leadership are professionals who are not swayed by emotions, fearmongering, or name-calling, but rather practicalities of what needs to be done to get the country moving in the right direction.

•Zibi is a former business editor who often called out the corruption that has crippled South Africa. Being a new party, Rise Mzansi has no baggage or governance track record, but comes with a bucket load of optimism and a clean slate – untainted by corruption.

Zibi and his ilk are the type and kind of leaders that are needed in South Africa, but it remains to be seen whether they’ll crack it into Parliament. I for one, hope they do!
