In 1950 nine year old Ponki is sent to the field by his grand-mother to guard their grain from sorghum-eating large doves. He’s having the best time of his life out in the field, when suddenly a towering old white man grabbed him and took him to his grand-mother (and others) loaded in big government trucks. They were driven out of their homes and dumped in dry dusty land.

Despite forced removals and more disempowering apartheid laws, Ponki’s love for farming never wavered and his commitment to cows led to tremendous achievements and influence in South Africa’s farming community. This narrative piece honours the resilience and relentlessness of our country’s genius and great teacher Rre Ponki Makinita.
It has been an insightful journey filming this story.
