IGNITING THE FLAME OF POSSIBILITY
SELLWANE THAKANYANE

By Leseli Mahloane

In Mafeteng Thabana-Morena Metsi-Masooana Ha Thakanyane, A young Mosotho woman named Selloane Thakanyane discovered her love for music in a rather unexpected way. Raised in a Christian family that frowned upon "worldly" music, Selloane's passion for singing took root in secret moments when her parents were away. It was in these stolen instances she found her voice, singing along to albums of Joyous Celebration, Benjamin Dube, and Donny McClurkin.

Selloane's determination and love for music knew no bounds. Despite her parents' disapproval of "worldly" tunes, she couldn't resist the temptation of artists like Beyoncé. She would wait for her parents to leave for work, and then the house would come alive with the sounds of Queen Bey and other musical legends.

But music was just one facet of Selloane's multitalented character and personality. She defied societal norms and pursued her passion for makeup artistry, even though her father didn't approve of the beauty art. He constantly urged her to wash her face, but Selloane's artistic spirit couldn't be dampened. Today, she proudly owns and operates "Khanya Beauty Studio," offering makeup services, eyelash enhancements, and ombré eyebrows.

Selloane's educational journey was marked by challenges and successes. She attended Kingsgate High School from Form A to Form C but eventually transferred to Mt. Tabor for Form D and Form E due to the strict environment and disciplinary measures at her previous school. Her hard work paid off, and she graduated with impressive grades. Continuing her pursuit of knowledge, she studied TV and Film at Limkokwing University, earning her degree.

Because of the high unemployment rates, Selloane chose the path of entrepreneurship. She founded Khanya Beauty Studio as a testament to her unwavering dedication and creativity.

Yet, Selloane's story doesn't end there. She explained music always held a special place in her heart, she and her cousins would play karaoke and sing along in front of the TV, which she still does to this day.

Her love story with Pablo DJ is a testament to having the bravery and drive of pursuing whatever she wants. Together, they created a song titled "KEA U RATA," inspired by their own love story, which endured despite initial skepticism from both of their mothers.

Their mothers' doubts were rooted in concern for their children's well-being, fearing that their relationship might be driven by ulterior motives. However, Selloane and Pablo DJ's love proved genuine and unbreakable. The song's lyrics, especially the heartfelt refrain "mama ngiyamthanda," reflect the depth of their love and their determination to overcome obstacles together.

Their love story caught the attention of Ntate Stunna, a prominent figure in the music industry. He encouraged them to turn their love story into a song. This collaboration gave birth to "KEA U RATA," a beautiful testament to love's endurance and resilience.

What sets Selloane apart and makes her an inspiration to many is her unwavering commitment to following her heart and dreams, regardless of societal expectations. She's faced numerous challenges but continues to show up, radiant and determined, refusing to be defined by her past. Her story serves as a beacon of hope for countless young Basotho girls, inspiring them to chase their dreams and nurture their unique talents.

Selloane's beauty goes beyond her appearance; she possesses a treasure trove of talents and a vibrant personality that lights up any room. Beyond her looks, she's a multifaceted individual who brings her unique creativity to the table. Her story resonates deeply with those who aspire to achieve greatness beyond societal norms.

The love story of Selloane and Pablo DJ is an evidence of the power of love and determination. They went from being close friends to lovers, their bond deepening through their shared love for music and their genuine connection. Road trips filled with old R&B classics provided the backdrop for their budding musical collaboration. When Pablo DJ recognized Selloane's exceptional vocal talent, the idea to create music together began to take shape.

Like any up-and-coming artist, Selloane has dreams and aspirations. She draws inspiration from legendary figures in the entertainment industry who have stood the test of time. However, one name shines the brightest in her dreams: Beyoncé. Since childhood, Selloane has been captivated by Beyoncé's artistry, drive, and dedication. She aspires to follow in the footsteps of her idol and make a positive impact on the youth of her country through charitable work, just as Beyoncé has done.

Selloane and Pablo are gearing up to release their brand new song, "UTHANDO"! Stay tuned for this sensational track.

In conclusion, Selloane Thakanyane's journey is a testament to the power of self-belief, determination, and the pursuit of one's passions. Her love story with Pablo DJ, encapsulated in the enchanting "KEA U RATA," serves as a reminder that love can conquer all obstacles. As she continues to inspire the youth of Lesotho with her multifaceted talents and unwavering spirit, Selloane is destined for a future that shines just as brightly as her remarkable journey.

Life is a bowl of cherries, they say, but once it breaks, what happens? We all go to high school where everything is nice and enjoyable. Most of us tend to forget that there will be separation at the end, and we do things that we'll later regret. Then comes the time for us to separate, and that's where most people see that there is real life out there waiting for us that no one can escape (reality). That's LIFE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL. To some people, it's a blessing to end high school, but to some, it's misery. They say all roads lead to Rome, but we all meet different obstacles on our way to Rome that make other people feel like it's the end of the road for them. Some people get to go to tertiary while others remain at home, some people get jobs, and some people go to supplementary classes. Yet all of us have the same vision - to see ourselves successful one day.

All from the same school, some went to university, others not. Thato aimed for medicine, while Bokang chose a different way. Sentle said success is learning, Mosuoe embraced challenges. Khothatso found lessons in travel, Rearabetsoe urged self-belief. Motaung warned against comparison, Mosena welcomed change.

Tumi found a purpose in service, Leseli adapted with time. Keabetsoe valued hands-on skills, Boitumelo learned from failures. Hopolang remained open to possibilities. Different paths, one goal: growth. As they parted, they knew life's adventure awaited, no matter the road they took.

Life holds many roads, each with its own lessons. Whether through books or experiences, challenges or changes, success is about growth. So step forward, embrace your path, and find the light that guides you.

What is your most memorable moment from your high school experience that you still remember today?

The Resilient Trend of Smile Decor from 2008 to Today

By Leseli Mahloane

Maseru – Remember the days when attending a high school farewell in 2008 was incomplete without sporting a dazzling and eye-catching smile décor’s? These tiny teeth stickers, affectionately called “smile décor’s,” were all the rage among students, adding a touch of fun and individuality to their smiles. What started as a quirky fad has evolved into a widespread trend that has captivated people of all ages up to their forties. In this article, we’ll take a trip down memory lane to explore the origins of smile décor’s, their initial popularity among students, and their resurgence as a modern fashion statement.

The Birth of Smile Décor’s

The history of smile décor’s can be traced back to the early 2000s when the concept of dental jewelry and accessories first emerged. Japanese dentists were among the pioneers who introduced the use of tiny crystal or metallic stickers to adorn teeth. As the trend gained momentum in Japan, it gradually spread to other parts of Asia and eventually reached Europe and North America. The stickers were non-invasive and temporary, allowing users to experiment with different designs without causing any harm to their teeth.

The Smile Décor’s Craze of 2008

Around 2008, smile décor’s hit their peak in popularity, particularly among high school students attending metric farewells and other social gatherings. These farewell parties held immense significance as they marked the end of an era and symbolized the transition to adulthood. As students donned their finest attire, smile decor added an extra flair of uniqueness to their looks. The designs ranged from simple sparkling gems to colorful patterns, allowing individuals to express their personality in an unconventional way.

Affordability and Accessibility

One of the key factors contributing to the widespread adoption of smile décor’s was their affordable prices. These stickers were relatively inexpensive, making them accessible to students and young adults on a budget. Additionally, they were widely available in cosmetic stores, malls, and online shops, adding to their convenience.

The Revival of Smile Décor’s

After the initial craze subsided, smile décor’s remained dormant for a few years. However, fashion trends often experience cycles of revival, and smile decors were no exception. Nostalgia plays a powerful role in rekindling interest, and as those who had used them in their youth reminisced about the trend, they began seeking ways to bring it back into their lives.

The resurgence of smile décor’s began in the mid-2010s when influencers and celebrities rediscovered this quirky dental accessory. Social media platforms became instrumental in re-popularizing the trend, with users sharing pictures of their embellished smiles. As the trend caught on, dental professionals and cosmetic companies also jumped on the bandwagon, offering new and improved versions of smile décor’s is made from safe and durable materials.

Smile Décor’s Today

In the present day, smile décor’s have transcended their initial association with youthful farewells and have found a place in the fashion choices of people of all ages, up to 40 and beyond. They are no longer restricted to special occasions; instead, people wear them as a means of self-expression, adding a touch of playfulness to their everyday lives. Dentists often apply smile décor’s in their clinics, allowing patients to customize their smiles during dental appointments.

The smile décor’s phenomenon that once adorned the grins of students attending matric farewells in 2008 has come full circle and is now a trend embraced by people of all ages. From its humble beginnings as an “in-thing” among youth to its current status as a widespread fashion statement, smile décor’s continue to evolve and surprise us. As trends may continue to change, one thing remains certain: the joy and lightheartedness brought about by these tiny teeth decorations are timeless. So, whether you’re a student preparing for a farewell or someone looking to add a twinkle to your smile, give smile décor’s a try and let your teeth sparkle like never before!
