things i should have known before starting a business:

1. BUSINESS REGISTRATION: It creates a positive impression not just for your clients but confirms that you take your business seriously. Most banks now offer a Business Registration Package together with a Business Account".

2. BUSINESS ACCOUNT: A business account will give you the opportunity to create a financial track record. Which will come in handy when you approach financial institutions for funding.

3. BUSINESS PAGE: Have a separate Facebook/Instagram Business Page to build your brand and advertise your products/services.

4. PRICING: Be transparent about your price, don't ask people to DM or Inbox you. Give your clients the opportunity to decide for themselves if they can afford your product or not.

5. Returns Policy: "NO REFUND POLICY" will drive potential clients away. Consider having a "3 to 7 days Returns/Exchange policy depending on the nature of your business.

6. FAIRNESS: "Do unto others as you would like to be done unto you" Treating your clients fairly will guarantee loyalty and they will keep coming back.

7. SALE: You are not a big retail store, SALES WILL LEAVE YOU BROKE. Buy 1 get 1 Free will leave you broke "Trust me I am talking from experience" Give your business time to establish its feet before you consider putting up items on SALE!

14. Marketing: Invest in your business!!!! Never sleep on your business, keep advertising and leverage on opportunities to market your business e.g Sponsored Posts, etc.

15. COMPETITION: Focus on building your business, don't copy what others are doing. Be unique and remember not everyone is your target market.

16. KNOWLEGDE: Invest in your skills, empower yourself and learn about your business. You don't have to have an MBA to have BUSINESS ACUMEN. Google is your friend.

17. MENTORSHIP: Connect and discuss possible solutions to your challenges with those who have been in business for longer than you.

18. FUNDING: Most financial institutions require your business to be registered for at least 12 - 24 months before considering you for funding. Your business needs to at least have an annual Turnover of 1Mil to be considered for funding. Some will lend your business if your monthly turnover is above R50 000. Provided that your business is registered, your financials are in order and don't have bad credit.

19. CASH IS KING: If you have good credit use it to advance your business, but don't get unnecessary debt that will rob your business from having cashflow.

Stokvels are great investment vehicles.
It cost R6 million to purchase a KFC outlet.
On my own I cannot buy a KFC franchise but if 2000 of us get together and invest just R300 in a stokvel we could purchase a Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet, a KFC outlet in a good area makes a profit of R1 million to 10 million a month.
It cost about R30 million to buy a hotel in South Afrika, if 2000 of us get together to invest R15 000 we could buy a hotel.
Each member could be given 1 to 3 years to raise this money.
All of us can raise R15 000 in 3 years.
These kind of investment vehicles could be used to purchase land, farms, hotels, franchises, retail stores and apartment buildings.
If 200 of us get together and invest R600 into a stokvel account we could purchase a Steers franchise that cost R1.2 million to purchase.
I have more than 4000 friends on facebook, if we could get together we could start a couple of stokvels and invest our way to wealth but like I said yesterday we need to trust each other.
Infact it would be better to invest in our own businesses than to invest in businesses like KFC and Nandos.
Nandos would cost us R7 million an outlet, it is possible to buy but it is better to open our own.
For example if I start a wine tasting business I would need R500 000 capital.
If 100 of us get together to donate just R500 we could open a very powerful wine tasting business and restaurant.
The profits would be invested in other businesses for example we need R100 000 to open a big biltong business, if 10 of us raise R10 000 we could invest in a biltong business.
I read an article where this girl who sells chicken was advertised in a newspaper for her success, after that someone (probably her friends and family) went to kill all her chickens because of jealousy.
This is the kind of mentality we do not need because it adds fuel to the myth that black people do not support or love each other.
The media will never stop to advertise this stupid behaviour because it does not want us to build together, well I say next year we start even if 10 of us start with R10 000 that is enough to open good businesses, Chesa Nyamas, Pie Businesses, Bakeries, Butcheries, bars all cost less than that to open.
Some of us could buy apartment buildings.
This is an opportunity of a life time.

Tips

1. Remove ID number.

Look at it this way, in order for you to travel, you will need to thoroughly plan for your trip, all those activities you do in preparation are considered planning and coordination to ensure a successful deliverable, which is you eventually going on the trip.

4. Remove Criminal Record (A company can do background checks).

5. Remove Marital Status.

6. Remove Number of dependants.

7. Remove the bold "Curriculum Vitae" at the top.

8. Justify and align your page.

10. Normally use Font Arial Size 11 (but you can customize)

A resume is used to apply for entry level job, graduate jobs in most cases and it is one page nothing more. Employers are not looking to comb through piles and piles of pages, if so they move right along.

A CV on the other hand can be more than 2 pages normally used to apply for higher or top senior positions, and it has more than one page due to the nature of these positions.

1. Never start your CV with "Curriculum Vitae". Start with your name boldly written with a larger font.

2. Ensure the address on your CV is the same with the location of the job. It will make interviewers consider you faster. e.g, if the job is in Johannesburg, apply with a Joburg address. If you don't stay in the same location, look for someone you know that uses same location.

3. Don't use childish email address. Use an email address with your name. Don't use email address such as [email protected]. It says a lot about your maturity and professionalism. You can use [email protected]. If the name is already taken, add some numbers, e.g [email protected]

4. Under personal data or profile. Some entities like date of birth, state and nationality are not compulsory. As a matter of fact, if the age they need doesn't favour you, just take off your date of birth. Keep the interviewer in doubt. Rather sell your skills.

5. Under educational background and dates, simply write your school, your course of study and then the year you graduated. Take off the year you got admission. Some people started school in 2005 and graduated in 2012 for a 4-year course. It might not be their fault but employers wouldn't take it that way since you're not there to defend it. So write out only graduation year.

Also, there's no need for your grade (First class, 2.1, 2.2, etc). Just take it off.

6. Specific Certifications is another area that's making people lose out of job search in recent times. Under this section, most people don't have what to put and it pi**es off most employers. It means you haven't done much to add value to yourself. If you are a fresh graduate try to do one or two short courses while at university like MS-EXCEL, SPSS, PASTEL, QUICKBOOKS Etc, else you will be submitting what we call a blank CV'. For those working, you can use your weekends to achieve same. It will help you in your next job search.

7. Under your work experience, you are expected to state where you worked, your job designation and your responsibilities. If you are no longer working in the firm, write your responsibilities in past tense. The current place of work can be written in present tense.

8.However, all your work experiences need not go on your CV except the one relates to the job you're applying for. it makes your CV concise.

9. Under your referees or references, please you are expected to have your referees name, address, phone number and email address. You can also use your family member as your referee but ensure you don't use the same surname. Also, ensure your referees are aware you are using them as referees.

10. An ideal CV should be in black and white not coloured except on two occasions: if you are applying as a graphic designer and you want to wow your employer or when your CV has the logo of the company you've worked before under your job experience.

11. Never forward a CV from your inbox to another employer. Open and compose a fresh mail then upload your CV and send.

12. When sending your CV, make sure the subject carries the job role you are applying for.

13. Don't save your CV on your laptop or phone as 'My CV' or Edited CV'. Simple save it with your full name, e.g Mavhungu Dakalo.

14. When sending your CV, don't leave the email page blank. Copy your cover letter and post on the email page. Forget the usual 'Sir, kindly find attached herewith for your.
