Mr Gay World South Africa, Luc de Meulenaere's national costume represents societal connection, freedom, and unity.
This costume, known as MGB 1724 Waya Waya Blanket. or MGB Mgaca Bhongolo Blanket, derives its name from the Nguni language, specifically Eswatini, spoken by the Swazi people of eSwatini (Swaziland) and South Africans living in the Mpumalanga province in South Africa. The design inspiration comes from Isabel Twana Gama and her sister Carol.
The symbolism of this garment is multifaceted. It is a recognizable blanket within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and has been associated with political struggles. Traditionally, it is predominantly grey with white stripes. The garment pays homage to former African leaders and political prisoners who wore it as they fought for the rights of marginalized people in South Africa.
This blanket serves as a unifying symbol, representing the past as well as the path of growth for those who continue their journey towards freedom and inclusion. Additionally, this design incorporates two significant historical national symbols: the Springbok and the protea flower. The Springbok is a national emblem that signifies inclusion, excellence, and national unity in South Africa, while the protea flower pays tribute to the indigenous people of South Africa and their heritage.
The colours used in the design combine those found in Mandela's Rainbow Nation flag and those associated with the LGBTQA+ community. These colours reflect the diversity of the LGBT community and their significance in South Africa's rainbow nation. Furthermore, the design incorporates various flags, indices, and symbols that communicate specific identities within the LGBT community.
The struggles faced by both South Africa and the LGBT community are encapsulated in the MGB 1724 Waya Waya Blanket.

🎨✨ Last night’s charity auction at Mr Gay World 2024 was a memorable one! I had the honour of auctioning off my painting, Ernesto et (es) la rose. This piece is more than just art; it tells a deeply personal story of resilience and hope. 🌹
In 2006, I met Ernesto at Village des Pruniers, where his dream of becoming a monk was crushed due to his HIV status. His spirit and strength inspired me to create this artwork, featuring Ernesto with a flower and grapes symbolizing his unwavering resilience.
By supporting this auction, we’re not just raising funds but also sending a powerful message of love, acceptance, and the right to live one's truth. 🌈✨ A Grindr Connection Turned Drag Sensation ✨🌈
It all started with a Grindr profile and a guy named Benjamin Rolin, who was searching for drag sisters. Though I'm not a drag queen myself, I knew one thing—drag belongs on a stage!
When I met Benjamin at his place, I was blown away by his talent for costume design. He hadn’t performed for anyone except his mirror, so I knew he had to showcase his art. I invited him to Le Bateleur Bar's Halloween birthday party, and wow, did he deliver! Benjamin’s stunning debut left the crowd in awe, and his passion inspired three others to join the drag journey—girls and boys alike.
What started as a plan for one show turned into ten, all sold out, with fans traveling up to 2.5 hours to see the magic. The experience even brought one of our regulars back, now proudly living her truth at 53.
I've received heartfelt thanks from so many, sharing how we’ve created a safe space for everyone. 🖤 It’s moments like these that remind me of the power of community and the beauty of being unapologetically yourself.
