From the Writer, Tokelo Hlagala

To: The Book Launch Audience.

Two years ago when “Poor Folk/s” was released I never had the desire to host a book launch. This was my first project as an author and this body of work was so sentimental to me. I didn't want to make a nig fuss about the book. Over the last two years, my view has been refined. I now understand that my writing endeavour is not about me, but about the human race, creating spaces for people to engage on the intricate topics and themes about existence.

As I shared during the opening of the Exhibition and the Walkabout, I was a bit skeptical in the early conversations I had with Bruce Bowale about the collaboration for the Resonance of my Body Debut Solo exhibition. I was uncertain about how the collaboration would unfold and how our ideas about life would converge. Overlooking some of the reservations I had, I agreed to the collaboration and felt that the process would lead us to our storytelling destination.

This book Launch is a result of two creatives ‘Chasing Ideas’ as one of the Artworks is titled, through chasing ideas we were led to this book launch & the exhibition.

We are living during times of great emotional and psychological distress, now more than ever we have never seen the human race facing so many internal wars. More than anything, the book launch was a journey of creating a sacred space to discuss the human condition, to shine a light, and to unveil some of the difficult conversations about life and living.

As you journey through your life, think about how you feel about the book launch, the discussions, the performances, and the book. Ponder on what you think about the themes of the book, the ways in which the themes are relevant to you, and those around you. I hope that you will continue to have some of these uncomfortable conversations in your spaces.

As we talk about the uncomfortable, we lift the veil of shame, we empower ourselves & those around us.

I hope we have added to your memory bank, and you have taken time to think about your own story.

Special appreciation to these organizations; KCS Book Club, Bruce Bowale , Pretoria Art Museum, Brand Chats, Artwork Photography, and African Neo Media.
