The Kucheza Afrika Festival Street Dance Competition took place on the 28th of April 2023 at the South African state theatre. This popular event showcased the incredible talent of street dancers who were ready to compete for the grand prize of R50k. The festival's name, Kucheza Afrika, is derived from "dance" in Swahili, and was introduced as Dance Umbrella Africa in 2019. The festival also established a stage to conserve dance in South Africa and other African nations, providing a permanent residence for dancers at the State Theatre.
The highly anticipated competition commenced with the top 10 soloists who competed in different genres like amapiano, hip hop, pantsula, and Bacardi. All group dancers brought their unique styles, attitudes, and swag to the stage, leaving the audience spellbound. The performers used props like crates as makeshift dance floors to enhance their routines that transformed the stage into a playground for their incredible moves. The crowd cheered loudly, adding to the already electric atmosphere.
The judges had a tough job as they watched each performance closely; eventually, only four soloists and four groups were chosen to proceed to the next round. The remaining contestants then competed in dance-offs, and the winners were decided through audience applause and the judges had the final say. The winners of the Kucheza Afrika Festival Street Dance Competition were over the moon with excitement and shock, and their enthusiasm was infectious.
Chana Mosupi the soloist winner said that “Winning the competition gave me hope for the future and inspired me to pursue my passion for dance. With the prize money, I plan to further my talents and assist my family, and I look up to Limpopo boy and Michael Jackson as my sources of inspiration.”
