LTA and the entire tourism industry is geared to receive droves of pilgrims this Easter

Limpopo Province is known to be the busiest Province during this time of the year as over 1.5 million pilgrims flock to the province to visit their various places of worship for the Easter period. The MEC of Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET), Mr. Tsh*tereke Baldwin Matibe, took the opportunity to wish all the visitors to the province well and a safe stay during this period. This, he did when he officially launched the newly built twenty (20) sleeper chalets at Nylsvley Nature Reserve this morning. The agency encourages Limpopo citizens to welcome visitors to the province with warm arms, which is what they are known for.
Matibe further said, “In line with our sister Department of Transport and Community Safety, we are also calling for calm and restraint on the roads during this time and urge all our visitors to drive with caution and restraint to arrive alive at their destinations”.
Easter period, presents a yet to be exploited area of tourism awareness for the agency. The purpose for this campaign is to among other things inspire and drive demand for domestic tourism through the conversion of VFR’s (Visiting friends and relatives) into leisure tourists; reduce seasonality and promote all year-round leisure travel; encourage the industry to embrace the digital transformation in their enterprises, thus providing support for the “Sho’t Left” campaign to both trade and consumers, and entrench Limpopo as the home of the mass pilgrimage given huge denominations resident in the province. The industry players will be encouraged to use the “Sho’t Left” platform as it is popular, and people easily identify with it.
Another competitive advantage is that the two Zion Christian Churches are not the only big churches in Limpopo. The Methodist Church, in Sekhukhune District is one of the biggest denominations in the province, while United African Apostolic Church (UAAC) in Vhembe District is another huge denomination with millions of followers from all corners of South Africa and beyond. Religious tourism is to this end, yet another area to be tapped into for increasing the number of tourists in Limpopo.
The Easter period is characterized by short visits by family and friends within the domestic market. In the case of the Limpopo Province, the added benefit is the flood of pilgrims to various churches in the province. These pilgrims come mainly from within South Africa but an undetermined number of them also hail from the neighboring countries of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho an Eswatini.
This presents a yet to be exploited area of tourism awareness for the agency. The 2025 Easter campaign will seek to incorporate the Pilgrimage as described above via activations around the sites of the pilgrimage. LTA will seek to expose “close to home” outings that are both affordable and family oriented. Digital media platforms will largely be used to activate the message that destination Limpopo has more to enjoy in line with its pay of line of “More To Enjoy”.
The promotion plan is designed to keep Limpopo Province as a top-of-mind destination within the priority markets in the country and to promote short to long-term packages for the target audience. Other planned output channels outside social or digital media include physical or ground activations in various districts.

Principal among suspects in Cwecwe r**e case as DNA evidence secured, says Police Minister Mchunu

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has confirmed that Jaco Pieterse, the principal of Bergview College, is among three suspects implicated in the r**e case of a seven-year-old girl, Cwecwe.

The case has sparked national outrage, and Mchunu's announcement marks a significant step forward, as DNA samples have been collected from all three suspects.

Speaking at a press briefing, Mchunu assured the public that the investigation was progressing, with forensic evidence now secured. "As of March 30, we can confirm that all three suspects, including Mr Jaco Pieterse, have had their DNA samples collected," Mchunu said. He emphasized the priority status of the case for the South African Police Service (SAPS), pledging that justice would be pursued swiftly.

The case has drawn intense scrutiny, particularly surrounding Pieterse, who was a respected figure in the community. Allegations surfaced that he initially resisted cooperating with authorities, but the confirmation of DNA evidence has now dispelled earlier doubts. The investigation has raised questions about the integrity of institutions entrusted with the care of children, and the reaction has been swift. Parents at Bergview College have voiced their anger, with some calling for the school to be closed until the investigation concludes.

“How can we trust someone in that position?” asked Nomvula Khumalo, a mother of two students at the college. “This is a betrayal of our children.”

Cwecwe’s family, has placed their trust in law enforcement to handle the case. Child welfare experts have underscored the importance of providing trauma support to the victim and adopting a child-centered approach throughout the legal proceedings.

As the investigation continues, Mchunu reiterated the government's unwavering commitment to tackling gender-based violence and child abuse, issues that remain a serious concern

Bafana Bafana could face FIFA sanctions for fielding ineligible player in World Cup qualifier

South Africa may have breached FIFA regulations by fielding Teboho Mokoena in their 2-0 victory over Lesotho on March 21, 2025, during Matchday 5 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Mokoena had received two yellow cards earlier in the campaign, first in South Africa’s 2-1 win over Benin in November 2023 and again in their 3-1 victory against Zimbabwe in June 2024.

According to FIFA’s rules, a player who receives two yellow cards in separate matches must serve a one-game suspension in the following fixture, which would have made Mokoena ineligible to face Lesotho.

Despite this, he started the match and played approximately 81 or 82 minutes before being substituted. The incident has raised concerns, as FIFA could impose sanctions such as a points deduction or a forfeit, potentially awarding Lesotho a 3-0 victory.

South Africa currently leads Group C with 10 points, but a successful challenge from Lesotho or Nigeria could significantly impact the standings. Although Lesotho initially missed the 24-hour window to file a formal protest, reports indicate they are exploring an appeal to FIFA.

Meanwhile, the South African Football Association (SAFA) has reportedly instructed the technical team to omit Mokoena from the squad for the upcoming Matchday 6 fixture against Benin on March 25, signaling awareness of the potential infraction.
