FARMER ON TRIAL FOR DELIBERATELY RUNNING OVER YOUNG BOY

South Africa — In a shocking incident that has sparked widespread outrage, 70-year-old farmer Christoffel Stoman has been brought to trial for intentionally running over a six-year-old boy, Khwezi Jantijies, after the child picked up a fallen orange near his farm property.

The harrowing event unfolded as Khwezi was walking with his mother, Magdalene Jantijies, heading into town for shopping. Witnesses have reported that the young boy picked up an orange that had rolled onto the ground before attempting to reach for another piece of fruit, located on the other side of a nearby fence.

In a moment that would forever change their lives, Stoman was spotted driving his vehicle, which was hitched to a trailer, directly toward the pair. Khwezi suffered severe injuries, including fractures in both legs, as a result of the incident.

What has fueled public anger further is Stoman's chilling statement during police questioning, in which he proclaimed that he “would do it again.” This remark has incited a wave of outrage from community members and advocates, who are rallying for justice and accountability.

As the trial unfolds, many are left pondering the implications of such a violent response to a child’s innocent act. The community's deep concern reflects broader issues regarding farm safety and the treatment of individuals on rural properties.

The trial continues to draw attention to the case, as both local and national communities seek justice for young Khwezi and his family.

BREAKING NEWS: SIU FREEZES CHWENEYAGAE’S ASSETS DUE TO CORRUPTION
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has secured a court order to freeze a Pretoria property connected to the late actor Presley Chweneyagae, his spouse, and several co-respondents in a National Lotteries Commission (NLC) corruption case.

The preservation order, issued by Judge M Victor on 18 December, targets Ms Charlaine Christinah Chweneyagae, in her personal capacity and as executrix of her late husband’s estate, as well as Mr Alfred Muzwakhe Sigudla, the Southern African Youth Movement NPO, and Domestic Baboon (Pty) Ltd, among others.

The order prevents any sale, transfer, lease, or disposal of the property while civil proceedings are prepared by the SIU, which must be instituted within 60 court days.

Investigators allege the home was bought with about R889,000 misappropriated from a R15 million NLC grant intended for youth arts programmes.

The SIU said the grant, approved for the Southern African Youth Movement and channelled through Domestic Baboon wholly owned by Chweneyagae was used to acquire the private residence.

Any criminal evidence uncovered may be referred to the National Prosecuting Authority for further action.

The SIU, empowered by President Cyril Ramaphosa under Proclamation R32 of 2020, is tasked with investigating corruption within the NLC and recovering state funds lost to unlawful activities.
