COMMITTEE WELCOMES MEASURES PUT IN PLACE TO TRACK DOWN SUSPECTS IN THE DAVEYTON SHOOTING

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has welcomed measures and extra resources put in place to track down suspects who opened fire on patrons at a tavern in Daveyton on Saturday.

The Committee has learned with great concern that six men were killed and one injured during this horrific incident and requests members of the public who have information that might lead to the arrest of those responsible to bring the information to the attention of the Police.

The Committee is of the view that the swift arrest of these suspects will contribute in bringing some form of closure to the families who lost their loved ones during this senseless killings.

While at this stage the motive of the killings is unknown the Committee is worried that the trend seen in 2022 of mass shootings in taverns is once again rearing its ugly head.

The Committee advocates for more tighter laws to regulate and control areas where alcohol is sold and consumed as alcohol can be seen as major driver of crime related incidents in the Province.
Owners and Operators of places where alcohol is consumed are urged to put stricter measures in place to ensure that patrons are safe at all times to avoid such incidents from taking place.

Places where alcohol is consumed should be seen as places of leisure and not crime scenes as witnessed during this past weekend.

The Committee will continue to monitor developments around this particular matter until those who are responsible are brought to book and face the full might of the law.

Four illegal foreign national spaza shop owners were arrested and expired goods from some shops were also confiscated during the operation by various law enforcement officers including the SAPS, the Dept of Home Affairs and Environmental Health Practitioners from Ehlanzeni District.

The former first lady Marike de Klerk's murderer has been given parole. Luyanda Mboniswa, who was convicted of killing FW de Klerk's first wife Marike De Klerk, and given a life sentence in 2003.

His parole is approved after numerous appeals, and he will be released this month. As of August 30th, Luyanda Mboniswa will be released on parole, according to the Department of Correctional Services (DCS).

Even roads are not spared from zama zamas. Windsor Road, which has been closed for months due to much-needed repairs, has suffered a heavy blow from illegal miners.

This comes after the collapse of a portion of the road. The administrator of the Mogale City load-shedding forum, Adrian Maytom, verified to the Krugersdorp News that recently, illegal miners dug up and wrecked about 100 metres of the road.

The Department of Home Affairs has announced that it will deport all illegal foreigners arrested during raids on zama zamas in Riverlea. 170 of the 194 suspected illegal miners arrested were confirmed to be illegal foreigners from Lesotho, Zimbabwe and other neighbouring countries.

A special police task squad dispatched to the Joburg west area this week apprehended 194 accused zama zamas. According to Police Minister Bheki Cele, 170 of those arrested are suspected of being illegal foreigners.

The police ministry has mainly verified this, stating that majority of the suspected illicit miners apprehended were from Lesotho, Zimbabwe, and other bordering nations.
