SA Canegrowers welcomes the fact that Minister Godongwana refrained from announcing any increase to the health promotion levy (sugar tax) in the 2024 Medium Term Budget Policy Statement. Since its implementation in 2018, the sugar tax has led to the loss of 16 000 jobs and continues to threaten livelihoods.

We urge government to follow through on its commitment to consult the entire sugar sector and conduct the promised studies on the socio-economic impact of the sugar tax and the full range of causes of obesity and ill health.

“We look forward to the promised consultation and working with the government to ensure that evidence-based policies that protect jobs and support rural communities are implemented. The sugar tax is not supported by evidence. Since its introduction, it has not promoted health outcomes in South Africa, but to the contrary destroyed jobs in areas that could ill afford it.” – SA Canegrowers Chairman, Higgins Mdluli.
