PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA RECOGNISES PRINCE MISUZULU ZULU AS KING OF AMAZULU

President Cyril Ramaphosa has today, Wednesday 16 March 2022, in terms of Section 8(3)(a) and (b) of the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act, 2019, recognised King-Elect Prince Misuzulu Sinqobile Zulu as King of AmaZulu Kingship.

This follows the passing of His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini Zulu in March 2021 and the subsequent passing away of the Regent, Queen Mantfombi Dlamini, in April 2021.

In terms of the requirements of the Act, the Royal Family identified Prince Misuzulu Singqobile Zulu as the person who qualifies in terms of customary law and customs to assume the position of King and applied to the President for his recognition.

As required by the Act, the recognition of the King-Elect by the President follows consultations with the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal.

President Ramaphosa conveys his warmest wishes to His Majesty King Misuzulu Zulu on the occasion of his legal recognition as King of AmaZulu Kingship.

President Ramaphosa said: “The assumption of the throne by His Majesty King Misuzulu Zulu is a moment of great significance in the proud and distinguished history of AmaZulu. His Majesty is the successor to a long line of revered monarchs, who fought with great courage and determination for the welfare and security of their people. I join all the people of South Africa in wishing His Majesty King Misuzulu Zulu a long and prosperous reign.”

STATEMENT | IFP Welcomes Appointment of New Chief Justice

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) welcomes the announcement by President Ramaphosa, of the appointment of Deputy Chief Justice, Raymond Zondo, as the next Chief Justice. We further welcome the President’s intention to nominate Justice Mandisa Maya to fill the now-vacant role of Deputy Chief Justice.

We would like to wish Justice Zondo well, and trust for a smooth transition as he officially takes up the mantle of Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court on 1 April 2022. We believe the appointment of Justice Zondo, who had been holding the fort as Acting Chief Justice, bodes well for the stability of leadership of this essential arm of the State.

As the IFP, we would like to speak to the recent criticisms levelled against Justice Zondo. He unwittingly became an object of public scrutiny, as the Chairperson of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture, Corruption and Fraud in the Public Sector including Organs of State, also referred to as the ‘Zondo Commission’.

Justice Zondo stepped up and accepted this challenging, politically-charged assignment, and presided over the proceedings without fear, or favour. He conducted himself in a manner that was above reproach, and a credit to the Judiciary.

However, this Commission is not the sum of Justice Zondo’s knowledge and experience. He has, over a long and distinguished career, shown himself to be a person of integrity, with the necessary skills and expertise to be fit for purpose as Chief Justice.

As he steps into his new role, we trust he will be afforded the necessary support and resources to continue to uphold the rule of law, and defend the hard-won rights and freedoms enshrined in our Constitution.
