Cop’s bail application reserved for Tuesday

By Libuseng Nyaka
QWAQWA – The Phuthaditjhaba magistrate court has reserved judgement on the bail application of a 29-year-old police officer who is accused of possession of unlicenced fi****ms and live ammunition.
Judgement will be delivered on Tuesday January 28,2025.
Mojalefa Dlamini - a police officer based at Fouriesburg border post - was arrested by police in Mangaung village on Monday 20, 2025 in connection with the murder of two police officers, Constables Gedione Motloung 39 and Sipho Motaung.
During his court appearance he was only charged with possession of unlicenced fi****ms and life ammunition.
But during Dlamini’s arrest on Monday January 20 2025 following a tip off from community members who linked him to the murder of the two constables, police could not link him to the murder pending ballistics results.
Opposing Dlamini’s bail bid, the state said there is a strong case against him pending a ballistic report which will link him to the murder of Constables Motloung and Mohapi who have since been laid to rest on January 16 and 17 respectively.
“We are still waiting for a ballistics report and there is a possibility that the fi****ms found in the possession of the accused could have been used during the murder of the two cops. If he is released on bail there is a possibility that he could interfere with the witnesses or evidence because he is a police officer and the case is handled by his colleagues some of whom are not aware he has been suspended,” Captain Masekoa testified.
Captain Masekoa said it is in the interest of justice and for Dlamini’s own safety that the is not released because the community is outrageous.
“During his arrest community members who gave us the tip off that led to his arrest were outrageous and wanted to take law into their hands. We are appearing here under heavy police guard in anticipation that there could be trouble.”

But Dlamini through his lawyer Kaibe

From candles to Cape Town: matriculant excels
By Emily Setona
QWAQWA - In 2024, Dimakatso Lebelonyana faced one of the most challenging years of her life. The young woman from Makwane, Qwaqwa, juggled the pressures of her matric year, financial struggles, and the weight of her family’s expectations.
Despite these hurdles, she remained steadfast in her pursuit of academic excellence and her dream of shaping a better future.
In an interview with The Guard this is what Lebelonyana said: “Last year was the most stressful year; it actually drained me emotionally. I had to focus more on my books than I used to in lower grades.
“Looking at my background and disadvantaged family pressurized me. I remember during winter when I had to study under candlelight during power cuts while enduring the cold nights. However, that did not deter me because I knew what I wanted.”
Dimakatso’s story resonates with countless South African students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. She attended Mohaladitwe Secondary School, a beacon of hope for many learners in Qwaqwa.
Her parents, who together earn less than R7,000 per month, have always supported her academic aspirations, despite the financial strain. Her parents Pitso and Mapule Lebelonyana have always encouraged her to do what’s best and reminded her that matric is just one year, but the results will determine her future.
“Matric is one year that has the power to determine the rest of your future so it was important for us as parents to encourage our daughter to do her best and she managed to get three distinctions and a bachelor’s pass. We are very proud of her,” Pitso said.
Even with the challenges of studying under difficult conditions, Dimakatso remained resolute. There were times when she felt sleepy during lessons because of the long nights of studying, but she would always go to her educators to ask questions and ensure that she understood the topics.
Her determination paid offhttps://theguard.co.

Disanyane passes matric despite living alone
By Emily Setona
QWAQWA - In a small house in Harankopane, Malefetsane Disanyane 17
recently celebrated a milestone that seemed almost out of reach: passing his matric. His journey was anything but ordinary because he managed to get a bachelor’s pass despite living alone.
Growing up in a child-headed household, Disanyane faced challenges that would have defeated many. Yet, through determination, family support, and the encouragement of his teachers, he emerged victorious.
In an interview with The Guard, Disanyane revealed that his mother passed away when he was just five years old, and he never knew his father. Left with his siblings, he grew up under difficult circumstances. His mother had five children, but two have since passed on, leaving Disanyane as the youngest; he has two older sisters.
His oldest sister Mosa Disanyane lives with her father in Monontsha but often comes to check on him. His second sister Puleng Disanyane, who is a student at the Central University of Technology (CUT) in Bloemfontein, stepped in to support him as best she could, often checking in and providing for him despite her own limited resources.
“Sometimes there was no food in the house. Other times, the electricity would go off, and I had no light to study by. It wasn’t easy, but I knew I had to push forward.
My grandmother passed away in 2022 so I lived alone and sometimes I’m scared because I’ve experienced a lot of housebreak-ins. My grandmother’s best friend who lives nearby sometimes checks on me and helps where she can.”
The teachers at Tsebo Secondary School (SS) also played a pivotal role in his success. Recognizing his potential, they encouraged him and even bought him a matric jacket as a symbol of his hard work and dedication.
“What I know is that the teachers supported him because he was a disciplined but vulnerable learner, who comes from a child headed family. He’s a very good soccer player. It’snot a surprise that he has done so well,” Tsebo SS teacher Tshepiso Senyane said.
Puleng Disanyane speaks proudly of her brother saying the following in an interview with this publication; “Malefetsane has always been

PA eyes mayoral post
By Emily Setona
QWAQWA – With the African National Congress’s having failed to garner enough votes to govern in Maluti-a-Phofung, smaller parties are fancying their chances of putting up a stronger showing in the 2026 local municipality elections.
Even though campaigning for the local government election has not started, the small parties seem to notice that time flies and they do not want to be caught of guard.
Such political parties that are visible around Maluti-a-Phofung include new boys Mkhwonto we Sizwe and Patriot alliance (PA), both of which have never been represented in Maluti-a-Phofung local council.
The Patriot Alliance (PA) has introduced Motswahae Serowe, widely known as “Master,” as their mayoral candidate, stating that he is the man to be entrusted with the job to turn Maluti-a-Phofung (MAP) around if given the opportunity to lead.
At a media briefing held on January 19 at the PA office in Debuilt, Serowe was presented as a leader and activist poised to bring change to the impoverished community of MAP.
Serowe emphasized his commitment to tangible action over empty promises.
“As the PA’s mayoral candidate, I am not here to make hollow declarations. My track record as an active community member speaks for itself. We, as PA leaders, fulfil our social responsibilities daily without holding official positions. When residents approach me for help, I assist without hesitation, demonstrating that leadership begins with action,” he said.
Local businessman and active member of the PA, Stanley Letsela, described Serowe as a dedicated activist with a hands-on approach to addressing community needs.
“The people of Maluti-a-Phofung must ask themselves: why continue voting for a party that consistently fails to deliver basic services? Master is not only passionate but also selfless, often using his own resources to tackle service delivery issues. He embodies the values of the Patriot Alliance,
