• Minister Mchunu denounces acts of gender-based violence

This comes after a man posted a video on social media where he confessed to killing his girlfriend.
The man then proceeded to post a picture of the victim’s body on social media. The man later took his own life by hanging himself near the scene where he took his girlfriend’s life. The minister’s spokesperson, Kamogelo Mogotsi, says this incident further highlights the persistent scourge of GBV in the country.

• England’s women’s cricket team ended their time in South Africa on Tuesday afternoon

The South Africans managed to bowl the English ladies out for 236 in their second innings. This saw a target of 351 being set for the Proteas to chase, but were bowled out for 64, which saw England claim a 286-run win. According to the coach of the Protea women’s outfit, Mandla Mashimbyi, his players improved as the match went on.

The United Nations (UN) says the conflict in Syria is not over yet. Rebel groups and their supporters have been celebrating the toppling of former president Bashar al-Asaad, who has since fled the country. The war in Syria started over 13 years ago when the government tried to suppress democracy protests. The UN says it is concerned about the possibility of a military escalation in the country. Tensions remain between US-backed Kurdish Syrian forces and Turkish-backed groups.

• Death toll in Vanuatu rises to 14

The death toll following the seven-point-four-magnitude earthquake in Vanuatu has risen to 14. Six people died in landslides, four in a collapsed building, and four at a hospital. The earthquake caused landslides and damaged buildings, embassies and the Villa Central Hospital. More than 200 people were injured. Power, water and communications remain disrupted. The United Nations estimates 116-thousand people have been affected.

• Kenya turns to assisted reproductive techniques to save its rhinos

Kenya is planning to use assisted reproductive techniques to save its northern white rhino population. The species faces extinction as there are only two northern white female rhinos left in the world. The population has been devastated by poaching over the years. Kenya says deliberate action is needed to save the rhino from extinction. Local authorities will launch the project in collaboration with an international group called BioRescue.

• Good Party says the DA is contradicting itself on the Bela Bill

The DA has emerged as one of the biggest critics of the bill that was signed into law by President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier this year. However, according to Good, the DA is using the debate on the bill to try and regain white Afrikaans votes it lost to the Freedom Front Plus. The statement follows after the Western Cape Education Department confirmed that Hoërskool Tulbagh would become a dual-medium school to accommodate English-speaking learners. • Ramathuba has called for an end to infighting among royals in the province.

Ramathuba visited the acting Queen of the Bapedi, Queen Manyaku Maria Thulare, yesterday. Ramathuba told yesterday’s gathering that the royals need to remember that they must serve their people.
