Thank you to BELOVED magazine, Dec 2024 issue for this fantastic write-up.

The menu is brief but attention-grabbing, and it changes every day. As it is after 12, we choose the lunch menu, which consists of two items: a chicken Caesar salad or pork belly. Neither item would normally be top of my list, but on reading the description of the salad, I can see it bears no resemblance to the usual mayo-clogged heap of food, but is something infinitely more refined. The description reads: Smoked Chicken Caesar Salad: focaccia croutons, butter lettuce, citrus, fennel & anchovy mayo.

It’s incredible, every bite delivers the taste of each unique ingredient and together they make magic on the taste buds. The portion size is just right- it’s satisfying without leaving you feeling overstuffed.

My partner and our friend chose the pork belly, which comes perfectly cooked alongside a small mound of stir-fried red quinoa and topped with corn, Chinese cabbage and pickles on the side. Both pronounce it delicious and far less fatty than expected. Our friend was aware that the café has no alcohol licence, so we have brought our own bottle of chilled rosé to toast her birthday. As we digest our meal, Phoebe comes to chat and says that if we feel like dessert and can wait 10 minutes, Ben has just put some blueberry and almond tarts in the oven. We certainly can, and it’s worth waiting for, served warm with a scoop of clotted cream, possibly the most delicious dessert I’ve had in South Africa.
