A heartbreaking homecoming: Malesa family receives remains of the fallen soldier

By: Ethel Malatji

After an agonizing two-week wait, the families of the 14 South African soldiers who lost their lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo have finally received their loved ones' remains at a solemn ceremony held at Swartkop Air Force Base in Centurion. The bodies arrived in South Africa last night, bringing a sense of closure to the grieving families.

For the Malesa family from Mashishimale in Phalaborwa, today's handover ceremony marks a poignant moment as they receive the remains of Corporal Matome Justice Malesa, one of the SANDF peacekeeping soldiers who fell in the line of duty. The family's wait has been filled with uncertainty and frustration, as they were unable to make funeral arrangements without official confirmation from the SANDF.

The delay in the repatriation of the bodies has been a source of distress for the families, who have had to endure an emotional rollercoaster while waiting for news. Today, the Malesa family and others gather to receive the remains of their loved ones, surrounded by the somber dignity of a military ceremony. Sergeant Major Matiwane says the ceremony includes a procession led by soldiers in full uniform to honor the fallen heroes.

The circumstances surrounding the soldiers' deaths have sparked widespread outrage and calls for the South African government to reassess its involvement in regional conflicts. The SANDF soldiers were killed in a ceasefire violation by M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A memorial service is expected to follow at 7 pm, providing a chance for the nation to pay its respects to the fallen soldiers and offer support to their grieving families.

BREAKING: Four Lives Lost in Devastating N4 Crash
By:Ethel Malatji

A multiple vehicle crash on the N4 outside Mbombela, near Karino in Mpumalanga, has claimed the lives of four people. The accident, which involved a Light Delivery Vehicle (LDV) and two sedans, occurred earlier today.

According to the Department of Community Safety in Mpumalanga, the crash happened when two Volkswagen Polo sedans, traveling from Karino towards Nelsville, collided with a bakkie. One of the sedans initially crashed into the bakkie, while the other sedan crashed into the two vehicles that had already collided head-on.

Tragically, four occupants in one of the sedans, which caught fire on impact, were burnt beyond recognition. The driver of the bakkie sustained serious injuries, while the driver of the other sedan escaped with slight injuries. Emergency services personnel rushed the injured to a nearby hospital in Mbombela.

An investigation into the crash is currently underway, with authorities indicating that dangerous overtaking may have been a contributing factor. However, the exact cause of the accident is still to be determined.

Repatriation of fallen SANDF soldiers underway
By: Ethel Malatji

The remains of 14 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members, who lost their lives during a peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), are being repatriated to South Africa. The process, initially scheduled for February 5, faced delays due to logistical challenges. The bodies are currently in Rwanda and will be transported via the Rwanda-Uganda border, with the United Nations coordinating the efforts.

On Tuesday, February 4, SANDF Chief General Rudzani Maphwanya informed Parliament's joint defense committee that the remains were expected to arrive in Pretoria on Wednesday. However, unforeseen complications have postponed their return. General Maphwanya assured that the families of the deceased are receiving all necessary support during this difficult time.

The soldiers were killed in a confrontation with the M23 rebel group in the eastern DRC. This incident has raised concerns about the safety of SANDF personnel deployed in conflict zones and highlighted the need for comprehensive support for the bereaved families.

The government has pledged to provide dignified funerals to honor the fallen soldiers' service and sacrifice. South Africans stand in solidarity with the grieving families, acknowledging the bravery and dedication of the nation's peacekeepers.
