Parts of South Africa Blanketed in Snow: A Rare Winter Wonder
Parts of South Africa Blanketed in Snow: A Rare Winter Wonder.
As of September 21, 2024, parts of South Africa are experiencing heavy snow due to a cold front that has swept across southeastern regions, including KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), Eastern Cape, and the Drakensberg mountains.
Snowfall has been reported in several areas like Underberg, Mooi River, and the Bushman’s Nek area in KZN.
Resorts in Drakensberg experienced snowfall overnight, and more snow is expected to continue through the day.
The South African Weather Service has issued an Orange Level 6 warning for disruptive snow in areas like Dihlabeng, Okhahlamba, and Umzimkhulu. These conditions pose risks for travel, with icy roads and potential road closures, especially in mountainous regions. Blizzard-like conditions, strong winds, and poor visibility are anticipated, which could lead to further disruptions in traffic.
Snow is also predicted for Gauteng and Mpumalanga this weekend, with temperatures expected to be among the coldest of the year. This cold front could also affect North West and Limpopo provinces, where residents are advised to prepare for freezing conditions.
The N3, the R74 and various roads in this region are closed and people have been stuck in their vehicles since last night. Don't even consider traveling between the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal this morning at all.
If you’re planning to travel, it is recommended to check local traffic updates and avoid unnecessary trips in the affected areas due to dangerous road conditions and potential road closures. Keep an emergency kit ready if driving is necessary.
