VAAL DAM RECOVERING UP AT A FAST RATE 💦

The capacity of the Vaal Dam is increasing at a very fast rate thanks to a continuing supply from the Grootdraai Dam near Standerton and fantastic rainfall across the region.

The dam is currently at 46.15% of capacity, nearly double what it was a week ago.

Yesterday, the Grootdraai Dam reached over 100% of capacity once again and two gates remain open (at 3-metres and 2-metres). This means even more supply still on its way to the Vaal Dam.

Once again, we remind residents across the region to use water sparingly as we are not out of the woods just yet.

Attached is a map of the catchment areas which feed into the rivers that flow. into the dam. Interesting to note that good rains in somewhere like Pretoria does not influence our regions water supply.

SHARP INCREASE IN LEVEL OF VAAL DAM IN JUST TWO DAYS

A combination of persistent rains and a generous donation from the Grootdraai Dam in Mpumalanga has seen the level of the Vaal Dam rise by around 5% over the past two days.

According to official statistics, the Grootdraai Dam was measured at around 102% of capacity this morning with two gates still open at three metres each. This means that water is still travelling down the Vaal River and into the Vaal Dam at a substantial rate.

This has, along with persistent rains in the important catchment areas, improved the level of the Vaal Dam to 30.36% as of this morning (January 10). This is an incredible increase of 5% in the last two days.

Although this is very good news with more rain forecast in the short term, it is still important to continue using water conservatively. Level 1 restrictions remain in place across the province.

More updates to follow in the coming days.

GROOTDRAAI RELEASES WATER; ON ITS WAY TO THE VAAL DAM

With a measurement of 111.42% of capacity measured at the Grootdraai Dam this morning (January 7), it was decided to open a single gate at 2m and released water is now on its way to the Vaal Dam.

It takes between three and four days for the water to make it's trip between the two dams.

Some gates were also opened at the Vaal Barrage (between Vanderbijlpark and Parys) after good rainfalls helped in raising the level of the Vaal River (below the dam). This water will make its way to the Bloemhof Dam.

The Vaal Dam was measured at 24.3% of capacity this morning and a combination of the Grootdraai supply and healthy rainfall in the catchment areas will see it rise substantially over the coming days.

Residents along the Vaal River between Standerton and the Vaal Dam are cautioned that the levels will rise and equipment such as pumps should be moved to higher ground.

The rain has been a real blessing! Let's stay on our knees and remain thankful.
