Sunspots on the Sun's surface - 11 May 2024
Here is my attempt to capture the current sunspots on the Sun's surface a few minutes ago.
My feeble attempt corresponds with the current images as seen from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) spacecraft in geosynchronous orbit around Earth.

Looks like the whole of the world is in for another magic show tonight.
18 March 2024, Roodeplaat - Storm through the Trees
I finally got time to get to the photos I took on the evening of 18 March 2024.
This storm system resembled something like a shelf cloud system, but was not a true shelf cloud system in my opinion and experience.
This image is a stacked/composite image consisting of two shots I managed to take through the trees.
Have a great long weekend everyone! 😎🌩🐉

Incoming storm system last night, almost looked like a shelf cloud system.
These words from one of my favorite poems came to me yesterday, when I saw the Moon next to this storm system towards the West.

2 March 2024, Roodeplaat
Lazy Evening Thunderstorms.
I took a well deserved afternoon nap, when I was woken by the distant rumbling of thunder.
After checking the incoming system towards the south, I knew chances of getting any photos without being interrupted rain are slim.
So I sat this one out on my stoep, watching the system splitting in two separate parts, one passing towards the east and the other one towards the west.
I was hoping for more rain, which I'm collecting for my pot plants. Maybe today we will get some more rain.

Where is my Mind feat HERE BE DRAGONS (Stacked Image of all my photos) - 27 November 2023, Roodeplaat
This is a stacked/composite image consisting of approximately 31 photos.
This was a storm my son and I watched this past Monday night at the Mooipoort Golf Club late last week Monday evening.
It was a storm system that popped up towards the east and tracked north.
I was hoping for closer CG strikes but unfortunately, the storm system moved away from us.
Have a great evening, stay safe and stay cool.
😎🐉🌩️
Where is my Mind (Final Edit) - 27 November 2023, Roodeplaat
Here are stacked/composite images consisting of between 2-5 photos each, of a storm my son and I watched this past Monday night.
We were at the Mooipoort Golf Club early evening and first tracked a storm system towards the south.
These images are from a storm system which popped which up towards the east and tracked north.
This storm system was very active with beautiful CG strikes as seen here in the images.
Have a great evening, stay safe and stay cool.

Where is my Mind (Quick Edit) - 27 November 2023, Roodeplaat
Here is a quick edit and a single photo shot of a storm my son and I watched this past Monday night.
We went down to the Mooipoort Golf Club early evening and first tracked a storm system towards the south. This storm system popped up towards the east and tracked north.
So later during the night we started to track this system which was very active with beautiful CG strikes.
Hopefully later this week I will get around to edit some more shots we got that night.
Have a great evening, stay safe and stay cool.

Dancing (all alone) with the Dragons-Part 3, 20 November 2023 - Roodeplaat
These thunderstorms from Monday night were quite active with CG lightning strikes.
Here are 4 stacked images each containing approximately 8 -14 photos.
The wind gusts were quite strong and my camera almost blew over a few times. A few of the shots I got, were distorted, and by the looks of it, my camera picked up wind vibration. I decided to use these shots in the stacked images you can see here.
Other than that, I got several good shots which covered about 1.5 hours of footage. So if I get the time in the next few weeks, I will see if I can put together a time-lapse video with the almost 300 shots I got that night.
Have a great weekend, stay cool and stay hydrated!

Dancing (all alone) with the Dragons-Part 2, 20 November 2023 - Roodeplaat
So here is another stacked image consisting of about 4 individual photos.
Here one can actually see how it started to rain (illuminated by surrounding lights) on the horizon with the CG lightning strikes moving ahead of the rain it self.
Usually there are many CG strikes in the rain itself, but it is sometimes not always visible looking from the outside into the rainstorm itself, depending on the intensity of the rainfall.

Dancing (all alone) with the Dragons-Part 1, 20 November 2023 - Roodeplaat
So between work duties and load shedding I managed to get this one done. It is a stacked image consisting of 3 individual photos.
Hopefully I will get to the other during the rest of today.

Dancing (all alone) with the Dragons, 20 November 2023 - Roodeplaat
"Silly Season" is in full swing in the construction industry and others, and combined with loadshedding and unexpected power outages like now, it becomes a daily struggle. So these days one doesn't get much free time.
I quickly put together this composite/stacked image this morning during "tea time".
This composite/stacked image consists of 3 individual photos taken over a time period of about 2 minutes.
Thunderstorms usually produce clusters of concentrated lighting strikes as they move. Here is a classical example of just that.
With experience one can stay safely out of the danger zone and get shots like this. Not that I was actually doing a real storm chase. But hey, once the Dragons appear and I have time, I will capture them, even from my backyard.
Stay cool, stay hydrated and keep safe everyone!

"Felt like I could just do without
It's like a bad dream
Tryna keep my eyes shut and I'm starting to doubt
If I'll find lightning in a bottle"
Dancing All Alone - Clinton Kane
Here are a few shots I managed to get processed quickly, from Monday night's thunderstorm that went past just south of the area where we live.
What better way to shoot (not chase) Dragons while having a few cold beers. (no Heineken's please!!!)
Drinking and driving is illegal and seriously dangerous with bad consequences. So I was happy to be able to shoot these after a seriously hot day drinking my beers.
Will see if I can squeeze out time later this week to process the rest of my shots.
Have a nice day, stay hydrated, stay cool and hopefully, we will see some Dragons later tonight again. 😎🌩🐉
The Dragons are Back, 12 November 2023 - Roodeplaat
My every day job kept me quite busy the past few months or so. This past Sunday evening was the first chance I got to chase some Dragons although it was from my back yard.
During the course of the day I was keeping track of incoming storm systems from the west. Luck was on my side, and I had time on my hands to capture these images.
Both images are composite or stacked images ranging from 2 to 10 photos each.
Our power got knocked out which was followed by loadshedding the following day and work duties.
I only managed to get to these images earlier today and I must say, I was not disappointed.
Hopefully, I will have more time during the builders break to actually do some real storm chasing for a chance and not from my back yard.
Keep well, keep safe and have a wonderful evening.
It is creeping closer and closer. Keeping an eye on this system.

3 May 2023 - Here be Dragons in Autumn – Time-lapse Video , Roodeplaat/Kameeldrift East That night I saw on the weather apps that we had storms over parts of Gauteng and I stepped out to take a look. I was not expecting much of a show due to the fact that we are in the month of May and any thunderstorms that may develop, will not be that active or intense. I was in for a surprise. This thunderstorm or storms were quite active and intense, it is a pity that it didn't come closer to my location and I couldn't get closer to it. This time-lapse video consists of 217 photos each at 15 - 20 seconds of exposure, which in real time was just over an hour’s duration of photos Music Credit: Scott Buckley PS. Another master piece track from Scott Buckley that is fitting to this time-lapse video of mine. 😎
3 May 2023 - Early morning thunderstorms, Annlin, Pretoria (Cell phone video) This morning's early thunderstorms over parts of Pretoria. First time for me.
9 April 2023 - Possible late afternoon thunderstorms - Roodeplaat I'm currently keeping an eye on this system moving in from the south west which can maybe later give us some later afternoon thunderstorms here in my area. I'm hoping for shelf cloud formations. 😎😎
13 November 2022 - The birth of a Mesocyclone aka Supercell Video Location: Buffelsdrift Conservancy Area So during my unexpected storm chase on 13 November 2022, I was about to say that I think I was looking at the birth of a Mesocyclone or Supercell as it is commonly known. I was not sure because of the locality, because usually, one will come across one of these in the Free State rather than the north of Gauteng. But it was verified by two storm experts whose expertise and knowledge I rely on from time to time. One can clearly see the mechanics of a typical Mesocyclone in my timelapse video here. Remember, I'm no meteorologist, I work in the construction industry, I like my beer, good music and motorcycles. That is the thing about Mother Nature, she will always surprise you, and that is one of the elements I love about storm chasing. This time-lapse video consists of 491 photos each at 1.3 seconds of exposure, which in real time was almost 11 minutes duration of photos before I had to leave due to the rain. My video was sped up by 10 times, but in real life, all that one sees here happens fast in terms of extreme weather and storm chasing. It took me a good deal of time to work on this video in between work, loadshedding and other personal responsibilities. I am grateful that I was able to witness this beautiful event with my own eyes and in person. I will take it as a gift from Mother Nature and my Guardians Angels. Apparently, I have a lot of those!!! Coffee break over, and back to work for me! 🤪😜 Have a nice day and stay safe! 😎🐉🌩 Music Credit: Scott Buckley PS. I love Scott Buckley's work, somehow he always creates a track that fits a time-lapse video of mine. 😎

5 December 2022 - Everything will kill you. So choose something fun. Location: Pretoria, Annlin On 5 December 2022 at approximately 09:25 I started doing a live video watching a beautiful incoming shelf cloud system coming in from the west. Shelf clouds are beautiful to look at and I've seen many different forms and sizes of these during day and night time. I use some methods with help of weather apps to determine when a storm system is indeed a shelf cloud system or not. However, I mostly rely on other people's photos further into the shelf cloud system or where it has all ready went past. This gives me then the conformation and then I can set up to capture it. From my past storm chases, I've learned that there are usually high winds and high rainfall behind these shelf cloud systems. The lightning strikes of these shelf cloud systems are beautiful but are very, very unpredictable. I have cut my live video short when I got a dangerously close CG strike from where I was standing doing my video. I could even smell the strike, which has a sulphur type of burning smell to it. Usually with close strikes, there is a loud "click" sound and then followed with in a split second by the roar of the thunderclap. That "click" sound is the actually "contact" or "striking sound" of the lightning bolt itself. With this, one I didn't even hear the "click" sound. The lightning strike that I caught in the frame of my camera was actually one of the "branches “of the main CG strike that was to the left of my camera's view. I will not recommend that anyone should ever do this. This close call was my second in two days time. And yes, it does make me rethinking my passion and the love I have for storm chasing. My other passion is motorbikes and especially off road motorbikes. I haven't had the time or finances to ride the past two years or so. And yes as with storm chasing I do get "withdrawal symptoms" when I haven't ridden a motorbike for a while. Both passions are danger
