A second chance for Marike de Klerkโs murderer after 22 years in prison
Luyanda Mboniswa, the man who killed former first lady Marike de Klerk in 2001, will soon be a free man after being granted parole by the Department of Correctional Services (DCS).
Mboniswa, who was a young security guard at De Klerkโs Cape Town apartment, confessed to strangling the former first lady to death and robbing her of jewellery and other valuables. He was arrested a few days in 2001 after the murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2003.
The DCS announced on Tuesday that Mboniswa, who has served 22 years of his sentence, has been approved for parole placement from August 30, 2023. The decision was made after a lengthy process of consideration by various authorities, including the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services.
According to the DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo, Mboniswa was eligible for parole placement after serving the minimum required time as stipulated by the Correctional Services Act. He said Mboniswaโs profile was prepared by the Case Management Committee (CMC) and reviewed by the Correctional Supervision and Parole Board (CSPB). The National Council for Correctional Services (NCCS) also dealt with the profile before submitting it to the Minister for a final decision.
โThe Minister is empowered by Section 78 of the Correctional Services Act 111 of 1998 to make a determination on those sentenced to life,โ Nxumalo said.
He added that Mboniswa will be admitted into the system of community corrections, where he will have to comply with specific parole conditions for the rest of his natural life.
โHe will be assigned a monitoring official to render supervision duties. Normal parole conditions will apply, such as being restricted to his magisterial district. He is also not allowed to have contact with the family of the victim and shall not change his residential address without informing the monitoring official,โ Nxumalo said.

According to Mmegi online, they were discovered in a cargo truck at the Ngwasha gate in a case that is thought to involve human trafficking. The truck driver and the 40 individuals who appeared to be travelling to South Africa are currently being held in Nata.
Senior Superintendent Kabo Badirwang, the district officer commanding, said they stopped the truck carrying the Ethiopian men, but inquiries into how they got from Ethiopia to Botswana are still ongoing.
