CELEBRATING OUR FREELANCERS: MEET MELANY VAN DEN BERG

Mel started working in the television and broadcasting industry in the late 80’s on the SABC’s classic show, Body Beat.

She has worked on all television genres imaginable, including music shows, game shows, reality tv shows, multi-cam live broadcast and magazine shows and dramas.

Mel has brushed shoulders with Africa’s top talent and celebrities. She was part of the New Model Today where Charlize Theron was crowned and was the TV Broadcast Production Co-Ordinator for Nelson Mandela’s 46664 Concert at Greenpoint Stadium.
Mel worked in production of the international reality show format Big Brother Africa 2, where she did all the selection of music played in the house and was known as the mother of the contestants.

Other popular shows Mel has worked on includes Die Nutsman, Ontbytsake, Negemaande and etv’s Scandal amongst many others.
Television is her life and when it comes to anything in production, Mel has you covered. She makes tv production look way too easy.

CELEBRATING OUR FREELANCERS: NERINE PIENAAR

Nerine is a treasured stylist, costume and fashion designer. She is renowned for her skills in the wardrobe and costume department with over 15 years of experience in the film, television and entertainment industry. She makes sure that the fashion is always fresh on every new job she embarks on. Nerine has cultivated The Wardrobe Studio in Johannesburg, where you can find all sorts of unique and exceptional pieces that has been seen in uncountable local and international series and films, including pieces from the famous South African film Mr Bones.

Nerine’s most recent work can be seen in the new South African Netflix series Justice Served as well as MNet’s esteemed series Reyka. Nerine is a regular SAFTA winner and it is an absolute honour to have her styling our on screen talent. Her caring and compassionate nature always keeps our talent calm, comfortable and ready for action!

CELEBRATING OUR FREELANCERS: MEET VALLERY GROENEWALD

Vallery is an artist by design and is famous for being an absolute genius in the Art Department.

She is a SAFTA award winning Production Designer that has established her own company called Savage Design.
She has worked on many international reality formats such as Survivor, Fear Factor, MasterChef and Big Brother only to name a few. She also has numerous local and international films and series under her belt.

She has worked all over the world and and always says it’s a pleasure to play for a living, especially if it includes power tools and paint brushes.

Vallery is as bright as her hair on set and there is never a problem too big to handle if she and her crew is around.

Telling stories in a couple of shots can be quite challenging, but our director has some tricks up his sleeve to reveal every character perfectly.

There is a clever little quote in Forest Gump that sums up this technique up perfectly, “Momma always said there is an awful lot you can tell about a person by looking at their shoes. Where they’re going. Where they’ve been.”

CELEBRATING OUR FREELANCERS: MEET LYN KENNEDY

Lyn has been an integral part of the film, tv and entertainment industry for over 30 years. Lyn has worked on literally every single type of entertainment programme and television series, even the news. She is one of South Africa’s most highly regarded make-up artists and has done make-up for numerous highly esteemed local and international celebrities. We hear she is local legend Nataniel’s favourite since they met in 1988.

Lyn’s artistic versatility and style is to be admired and having her on set is an absolute comfort for those on screen and off. We will always be ready to shoot when she is around. Lyn brings beauty and happiness to every set and we are always ecstatic to have her on set with us.

CELEBRATING OUR FREELANCERS: MEET LUDVICK BIDDULPH

Ludvick is a DOP and camera operator with more than 25 years in the film and television industry. Ludvick started his career by training as a photographer in the national air force. From there he quickly fell in love with the videography and cinematography medium as well.

Ludvick has worked on uncountable reality tv shows as DOP including international format shows such as Survivor, Come Dine with Me SA, Dinner Date SA, Masterchef, The Bachelor, The Batchelorette and The Great South African Bake Off.

Ludvick’s has the talent and passion for capturing the perfect story in one shot, and making it look like an artwork as well! That’s why we love to see him behind our cameras!

Introducing Philip Nolte, Phly Media’s creative producer. Philip is also known as a writer/director but most of all a visual storyteller.

His scripted directorial debut was the critically acclaimed short film ‘Vossie Vergas Homself’ that has screened at 15 international film festivals. Philip has immense experience in documentaries and non-scripted work, being the creator of KykNet’s Die Groenste Vingers. He has worked on shows such as Plaasjapie and S*x in Afrikaans and his repertoire also includes international reality formats such as Dinner Date SA and Love Island SA.

He has recently won The Writer’s Guild of South Africa Award for best script in an indigenous language for Morgenster produced by RSG.

Philip is a creative storyteller, a coffee drinker, a lover of art and a person that has an absolute passion for his craft.

Introducing Lyall Ramsden, co-founder and producer of Phly Media. Lyall has been working in the film and live entertainment industry for 18 years.

He's been involved in many scripted and non-scripted TV and live entertainment projects for clients such as KykNet, Mnet, Media24, Sandton City and Emperors Palace. Lyall doesn’t only have behind the scenes experience but has also performed in various TV and Stage productions. Part of his producing journey lead him to own an intimate theatre space, Theatre in the Park in Johannesburg.

Lyall has an understanding of obtaining intellectual property and working with clients to creatively develop and produce high quality productions.

Lyall believes in creating a calm and dynamic working environment which always makes for a happy crew making happy content.
