Terry Wieland On Ammo
The .30-06. Hail and…hail again!

Having reached an age where half my mail is from readers wanting advice on rifles and the other half is from funeral homes and the NRA asking me to remember them in my will, it seems like a good time to once again sing the praises of my all-time favorite cartridge for medium game: the .30-06.

Wild Footage of Wild Dogs

More than 10 years ago, I had the fortune of being hosted at what was then probably the top private game reserve in Namibia: Erindi. Paul Joubert kindly hosted a few of us from the African Hunting Gazette. Upon arrival, we walked out onto the patio to soak up the atmosphere. It was around midday, and just 100 yards in front of us was a resident pack of wild dogs.

An unsuspecting red hartebeest wandered by, and realizing the danger, it quickly took off. The chase began right before our eyes. Known as the most successful hunters due to their patience and stamina, the wild dogs outnumbered and outsmarted the antelope. Despite being one of the fastest animals, the hartebeest headed into a pond, hoping for refuge. Thinking it was safe, it failed to stay in the middle of the water. Unfortunately, it wandered to the edge, leading to its grim end.

This video, captured on a very old model iPhone, reveals the brutal reality of mother nature.

Insurance and trophy coverage: where do responsibilities begin and end?

When or if things goes wrong, it’s important to understand where in the process they went wrong and who should be held accountable.

• At the taxidermist, your work should be covered by the taxidermist, but many have disclaimers saying they take no responsibility. Check that up.
• When complete, your trophies are crated. This is done either on site at the taxidermist, by the taxidermist, or they are crated on site by the export shipping company. Alternatively, they’re transported to the export shipping company’s warehouse and crated there.

• Depending on the above, the crate is then transported to the shipping warehouse near the port of departure. It’s then handed over to the airline for export if going by air. If by ocean, it is loaded onto a container that is filled, by the export shipping company, where it is then transported to the harbor for export.
• At the importing country, it is received, offloaded, and warehoused. Then it’s cleared through customs, inspected and, where applicable, if not collected, it’s delivered to a final destination.
• Trophy coverage can vary. It can be covered from the taxidermist in Africa just to the port of entry in your home country. Some coverage is for the entire way
• From taxidermist in Africa through the freighting, clearing and transportation to your trophy room, covering the entire journey. Finding accountability should something go wrong, is difficult. AHG’s TTS service provides cover, if taken up, that encompasses all the above. From the field to your home.

Taken on the Wing
Hunt of a Lifetime, By Ken Bailey

Flying in with the sun behind them as though they’d stolen the Red Baron’s playbook, the birds suddenly appear. But it’s too late. Having obviously seen us, they’re already twisting skyward as I shoulder my gun. I manage to get off two shots, but in truth, it’s a desperation move—I don’t cut a single feather before the flight of a dozen sandgrouse disappears toward the horizon.

The Odd Couple and the Hippo ribs, by Ricardo Leone

Do you remember the 1970’s American sitcom, “The Odd Couple”? The comedy’s two lead characters were Felix Unger and Oscar Madison. Felix was the uptight, neurotic, OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) photographer whose wife threw him out of the house. Felix then moved in with his old friend, Oscar Madison, a sportswriter who, in a word, can only be described as a slob. Can you imagine hunting with an Odd Couple? Well, I can – in fact, I did!

On Shooting

RIFLESCOPE - Considerations for Africa, By Johan van Wyk

It has been my observation that the market for hunting-related optics in general, and riflescopes in particular, is at an all-time high in terms of the volume of new products being introduced. Even though I tinker with guns and rifles and write about them for my very modest living, I must admit that I sometimes find some of the new products and the myriad features they sport a bit confusing, and I downright pity the person who has just bought a first hunting rifle and must now decide on a first riflescope to buy without some informed guidance.

HIGHLY STRUNG

Shades of Africa, By Amanda Lynn Mayhew

Recently three friends and I, Rae, Erika, and Shannon, set out on a bowhunting safari in the heart of the South African wilderness, wanting to challenge ourselves in the untamed beauty of the landscape. The daily explorations, close encounters and successful harvests provided an exhilarating adventure that proved to be the experience of a lifetime for each of us. Our bond as women, and as hunters, grew increasingly stronger as we immersed ourselves in the travel, vibrant cultures, and bountiful hunts.

The Shikari Rifle, by Diggory Hadoke

The October of 2017 and Blair Atholl are a distant memory. We (a group of invited journalists) gathered on the hill to hear David Miles and Marc Newton explain the story of the new model Rigby was launching: The Highland Stalker, a close, but appropriately modernised version of the classic Rigby Ma**er .275 magazine rifle that had proved so popular with hunters, explorers and adventurers in the years between the Boer and Second World Wars.

ON THE HUNT

Like old home week - by Ken Bailey

I first met Eldre Hattingh in 2005 or 2006. He showed up with a booth at my local sportsmen’s show, the first Africa safari operator and PH that I recall having attended. He was just a young man at the time, probably 26 or 27, but he had an earnestness and transparency about him that made me instantly like him. At that very first encounter I told him I would one day book a safari with him, and in 2008 I did just that. At the time, his Lucca African Safaris lodge was in Limpopo province, and my wife and I spent 10 days with Eldre and his team. We weren’t at the lodge long, however, just the few days required to see the area and for me to take a fine Limpopo bushbuck. After that, the three of us travelled south, visiting Kruger National Park, and then stopping here and there to enjoy the wildlife and the landscape of South Africa. Along the way we took time out for me to shoot a nyala, then a couple days later, a zebra. We had a wonderful time together (my wife soon thinking of him as a third son) and formed a fast friendship.

Africa’s Greatest Hunting Magazine

Richard Lendrum (Publisher) Richard was born in Zambia in 1966, grew up in Zimbabwe, and has lived in South Africa for the last 22 years. Schooled in Bulawayo and then doing a Marketing BComm in South Africa, he was privileged to grow up close to nature, in a family that spent much time in the Matopo hills outside Bulawayo studying and collecting birds. With a passion for wildlife, Richard realized the role that tourism – and especially hunting tourism – plays in conserving wildlife, as well as in habitat conservation, and wanted to be part of that. Richard is an entrepreneur and conservationist at heart. Alongside the marketing and media business Richard founded 21 years ago, African Hunting Gazette contributes to his mission – promoting hunting in Africa. His vision for African Hunting Gazette is to help grow (double) the number of international hunters to Africa to 20,000. The space, game and inherent interest in Africa is there. He plans on developing a cohesive group of outfitters across the continent working in a cooperative, yet competitive environment, all with one objective - to promote hunting for the benefit of the continent of Africa.
