Zebras are some of the most iconic animals on the planet, instantly recognizable by their bold black-and-white stripes. Though they share a family tree with horses and donkeys, these uniquely African equines have some wild traits all their own!

But as their habitats shrink, zebra populations are threatened, with some species now endangered. International Zebra Day 🦓 is about raising awareness and inspiring action to protect these striped wonders.

Let’s celebrate zebras and work toward a future where they continue to roam free!

Think giraffes are just tall and graceful? Think again. In the Hoanib River valley of Namibia, Angolan giraffes have mastered desert survival. Their 53-centimetre-long tongues are not just for show—they’re perfectly adapted to reach thorny acacia leaves, their main food source in this arid landscape. Add to that a heart weighing up to 11 kilograms, pumping blood to their towering heads, and you’ve got an animal built to thrive in extreme environments.

The Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) works tirelessly to study these desert-adapted giants, and you can spot them on a game drive at Hoanib Valley Camp, located in the Sesfontein Community Conservancy.

The deep, rumbling grunts of hippos are the soundtrack of Botswana’s rivers and floodplains—an unmistakable reminder of their territorial nature. While they may look like laid-back grazers, these semi-aquatic giants are armed with massive teeth that play a key role in defending their watery kingdoms.

On the Chobe floodplains, .media film crews once witnessed a hippo’s surprising aggression when it charged out of the water to chase wild dogs off a fresh kill. Turns out, hippos don’t just protect their turf; they’ll also disrupt predators at the water’s edge. Is it territorial instinct or something more?

Discover the fascinating world of Botswana’s hippos along the Chobe River and Okavango Delta floodplains—where their stories come to life.

Meet the African penguin, the only penguin found in African waters and often nicknamed the "jackass penguin" for its hilarious donkey-like bray. These charismatic birds might look adorable waddling around, but they're masters of the ocean—streamlined, flippered, and built for chasing fish and squid underwater.

Sadly, they're also critically endangered, with populations plummeting due to overfishing, habitat destruction, and pollution. Places like Boulders Beach in South Africa provide a safe haven where you can see these charming penguins up close—while supporting their conservation!

Throwback Thursday! Isilo (c. 1956 – 2014) was one of South Africa’s largest African elephants and the largest living tusker in the southern hemisphere before his death. He was known as a tusker, a male elephant with tusks weighing over 100 pounds.

Although Isilo died of natural causes relating to old age, his death attracted international media attention because his tusks, considered a National Heritage artefact, were missing when his body was discovered.

Cheetahs: nature’s speedsters and masters of stealth! With acceleration that leaves even the fastest supercars in the dust, these cats can hit 0–100 km/h in just 3 seconds. But speed isn’t their only trick—cheetahs rely on their black "tear marks" to reduce sun glare while focusing on prey. Talk about built-in sunglasses!

Sadly, fewer than 7,000 cheetahs remain in the wild today, making every sighting a privilege and a reminder of why conservation matters. Let’s celebrate these iconic cats and their role as the fastest land animals on Earth!

Coyotes are nature's ultimate survivors, thriving in deserts and bustling cities. As opportunistic predators, they help control populations of rodents and other small mammals, keeping ecosystems in balance. Their adaptability has earned them a vital role in North America's wilderness and urban landscapes.

Whether you hear their haunting calls echoing through the wild or spot them navigating city streets, coyotes are a testament to resilience and versatility.

In the heart of Namibia’s Hoanib Skeleton Coast, desert elephants have adapted to survive where few others can. With broader feet and longer legs, they effortlessly cross sandy dunes, travelling hundreds of kilometres for food and water. These giants can go days without drinking, thriving on drought-tolerant plants like camelthorn and ana trees. Their resilience and adaptability inspire awe—and even their dung supports the ecosystem by providing food for other animals.

Imagine standing at the edge of Africa’s largest canyon, the Fish River Canyon in Namibia. Stretching 160 km, it’s a geological marvel and a living ecosystem. Carved by the country’s longest interior river, this rugged canyon cuts deep into a dry, rocky landscape with hardy plants built to survive Namibia's intense climate. This site has a breathtaking view and a thriving hub for eco-tourism—perfect for adventurers seeking a unique experience. Public viewpoints offer stunning vistas near Hobas, part of the ǀAi-ǀAis/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. For those willing to explore further, the hot springs of ǀAi-ǀAis are a perfect end to the day.

Polar Bear Week is here! 🐻‍❄️ We celebrate these Arctic giants just as they begin their autumn migration, navigating one of the harshest environments on Earth. Polar bears are built for this frozen world, from their dense, water-repellent fur to massive paws that act like snowshoes, helping them easily travel across the ice. But as sea ice melts earlier and forms later, these powerful predators face new challenges each year.

By raising awareness, Polar Bear Week reminds us of our role in preserving their habitat and ensuring these majestic bears thrive for generations.
