The Olympic (Alan) Committie presents the annual laughathon COMEDY GOLD!

Joburg audiences, get ready for his side-splitting Comedy Gold, on stage at Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre until 16 March 2025.

In Comedy Gold, Alan Committie will once again award comedy medals to all the quibbles, foibles, outrageous inconsistencies and multiple inefficiencies that made up modern living in 2024/5.

From elections and appalling selections, through Air BnB’s and deleted WhatsApp messages but never ignoring Olympic shenanigans and dieticians, this show will be filled with all the customary wordplay, physical hi-jinx and surreal detours into fresh perspectives that you associate with this jester.

Also: a flipchart. Or even flipcharts.
Always.

Although not a trained athlete in the traditional sense, Committie is a highly respected and well-regarded member of the Lower Blairgowrie Amateur Association 7th team badminton squad (reserves).

And apparently doesn’t eat carbs on a Tuesday.

Did I mention there will be flipchart(s)?

The show is coached by Chris Weare who may or may not be on a course of steroids but never for the reason you guessed.

The show runs until 16 March at Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre in Fourways.

Performances are Wednesdays – Fridays at 19h30, Saturdays at 16h00 & 19h30, Sundays at 15h00.

Tickets range from R150 – R260 and bookings are through Webtickets:

https://www.webtickets.co.za/v2/event.aspx?itemid=1554993615

Alternatively, you can contact the Box Office at Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre at 011 511 1988.

For group bookings, email Geraldine at [email protected] or call 011 511 1988.

Comedy Gold is 90 minutes in duration with no interval.

How did we get here so fast?

Four years flew by in the blink of an eye. Well, that’s how it feels!

Today marks four years in business, and honestly, I’m still wrapping my head around it.

🔹How did it all begin?🔹
Over four years ago, I had a dream to create something new. I wanted to use my skills and experience to help business owners and coaches build brands they love, increase their visibility, and free up time to focus on growing their businesses. Plus, I love being creative, so it felt like the perfect fit.

I knew I had to take the leap. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, I embraced the challenge and built something of my own. While brainstorming names, a good friend said, "Wait… how about Phoenix?" It felt like fate. And just like that, Phoenix Media was born.

🔹Looking back on the journey🔹
I have had the privilege of working with clients locally and across the world. I have met incredible business owners who started as collaboration partners but have become true friends.

I have learnt to be resilient, to ask for help when needed, to grow in confidence, and most importantly, to be patient with myself—because running a business has been the greatest self-development journey of my life.

🔹What’s next?🔹
This is just the beginning. I am excited to see Phoenix Media soar to new heights, working with even more incredible business owners and coaches. Plus, I have an exciting collaboration to share soon.

I am deeply grateful for everyone who has been part of this journey. To my clients, thank you for trusting me with your brands and businesses. Your support means the world, and I cannot wait to see what the next four years bring.

As I celebrate this milestone, I’d love to hear from you—what’s an achievement you’re most proud of?

Paprika Productions SA, in collaboration with Daphne Kuhn, is thrilled to announce the upcoming production of Martin McDonagh’s critically acclaimed International play THE PILLOWMAN. The play is a chilling and provocative masterpiece that explores the harrowing intersections of art, truth, and morality.

Directed by the visionary ILDI KUNGL, who also stars alongside an exceptional cast including Hugh Becker, Wentzel Lombard, Teboho Tladi, and Helena Herbst, this production promises to deliver a gripping theatrical experience like no other.

Set in a world rife with suspicion, The Pillowman unravels the story of a writer whose unsettling short stories begin to mirror horrifying real-life events. This darkly comedic and suspenseful narrative will challenge perceptions, blur the line between reality and fiction and leave audiences questioning the power of storytelling itself.

This production goes beyond traditional theatre by integrating an exciting pre- and post-show art exhibition, featuring works from talented local artists, including digital illustrators and painters. These artworks, directly inspired by the themes of The Pillowman, will be woven into the fabric of the play, enhancing the immersive experience while providing a platform to celebrate Gauteng’s vibrant artistic community.

The collaboration aims to uplift diverse voices and foster a dynamic dialogue between the performing and visual arts, creating a cultural event that resonates deeply with audiences.

Support act for Soul II Soul’s Montecasino concert announced…

This year’s Intimate Evening Series, a collaboration between Liberty, Griza Enterprises and leading local promoter Showtime Management – designed to usher in each new year with a symphony of hope – features Soul II Soul in Johannesburg for a celebration of reggae, R&B and neo-soul at Montecasino’s Outdoor Events Area on 01 February, before taking the show to Kirstenbosch in Cape Town on 08 February.

The British hitmakers, creators of the classic singles “Keep On Movin’” and the huge hit “Back To Life (However Do You Want Me)” – Number one in both the US and the UK in 1989 – will be supported by South African legends TKZee.

The trio – Tokollo Tshabalala, Kabelo Mabalane and Zwai Bala, who met at school in the early Nineties – became the biggest-selling kwaito band in South African musical history when their 1997 and 1998 singles “Palafala” and “Shibobo” (respectively) both earned sales more than 100,000 copies, making TKZee a household name across the African continent.

As their profile exploded, TKZee incorporated several different genres into their music – kwaito, hip-hop, classical, house and gospel – crafting what became known as “Guz” music, and instant (and massive) hit with young South African music fans. Their haul of five South African Music Awards in one year for their “Halloween” album (1998) was a record that stood for well over a decade. The group split in 2002 to pursue solo careers by reunited for the 2009 album “Coming Home”, going on to be one of only six musical acts to represent Africa in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Opening Ceremony in Johannesburg. After the sudden passing of Tokollo Tshabalala in 2022, his longtime friends and fellow band members Kabelo Mabalane and Zwai Bala continue with the legacy of TKZee.

Fans arriving to watch Soul II Soul and TKZee at the Montecasino Outdoor Events Area will experience a mini festival environment, with plenty of food and beverages are available. Picnic baskets as well as food and beverages may not be brought to the concert venue. General Admission tickets offer limited unreserved, ad hoc seating, so don’t arrive too late. Alternatively, consider the option of tickets to the VIP Area, costing R1995 each, which include access to a raised deck, seating pockets, shade, canapes, a private bar area and a private toilet area.

"At Liberty, we remain committed to being 'In It With You,' supporting South Africans through life’s complexities and shared experiences,” says Marees Bostander, Head of Brand Strategy and Sponsorships at Liberty. “The Soul II Soul concert series is a celebration of connection, resilience, and joy—an opportunity for audiences to relive cherished memories and create new ones through the timeless power of music.”

“We are delighted to bring Soul II Soul to South Africa as part of our highly successful partnership with Liberty and the Liberty Presents ‘An Intimate Evening’ concert series,” says Tony Feldman of Showtime Management. “The talents of TKZee and DJ’s Admiral and Jahseed Die Fireseed add local flavour to the line-up. It’s going to be a night to remember.”

General Admission tickets are on sale at showtime.co.za, webtickets.co.za and Pick ‘n Pay retail stores at a cost of R895. VIP tickets are available at R1995 each. Doors open at 5pm. Don’t miss the DJ partnership of Admiral and Jahseed Di Fireseed followed by TKZee before the legendary Soul II Soul featuring Jazzie B who brings nothing but good vibes and timeless grooves to Jozi.

Helenè Bester pays tribute to Nana Mouskouri in hit production.

In her production – Helenè Bester sings Nana Mouskouri – Helenè Bester pays tribute to the iconic Greek singer. Bester’s production was launched to great acclaim at the Oppiwater Arts Festival in 2019. It was written and directed by Frans Swart of Lefra Productions and Heinrich Pelser, who is Helenè’s accompanist during the Mouskouri shows, did the musical direction.

The production will be on stage at the Theatre of Marcellus at Emperors Palace on Sunday, 9 February 2025 at 15:00. Bookings can be made at www.LTickets.co.za, or by calling (011) 815-3000. Helene Bester sings Nana Mouskouri is presented with the generous support of Ambassador Execudrive, Van Loveren Wines, Hollywood Costumes, RSG, Lift, Britz Couriers and Removals and WS Pianos.

Helenè says, “I have always hoped to do a Nana show. I am crazy about her voice and my sister, and I grew up with her music". “We really thought that she was a friend of my mom's, because they look so much alike. I believe the time is ripe for me to do the show now, as I'm not sure I would have been able to interpret her music so well ten years ago. My voice is older and perhaps has a more mature sound, which I believe is favoured by her target audience. I studied her music videos to observe how she moved on stage, what she did with her hands and how she addressed an audience. One wants to be as credible as possible.”

Director Frans Swart agrees: “When Helenè approached me concerning this project, I was immediately excited. Who better than the talented Helenè to pay tribute to the timeless and elegant Nana Mouskouri?”

While studying Classic Guitar at TUKS, Heinrich started playing sessions for various bands and solo artists. He wrote and performed with the bands Ice Project and Frankie Fire, and played venues such as the State Theatre, GrandWest, the Standard Bank Arena, and the Main stage at Oppikoppi. He formed the instrumental group Awesome Foursome and performs with his wife Bianca as Lily and Bear. He produces and records music at his home studio in Clarens and performs solo in the Town Square restaurants. Heinrich is also currently working on the production Gitare - Cordoba tot Kraaifontein with Mauritz Lotz, which will be launched at the Oppiwater Arts Festival next year.

It was an exciting decision for Helenè to pay tribute to Nana Mouskouri. “Even today, Nana is still just as popular, because people of my age also listen to her music. We let her music live on. She sold 300 million records and can speak and sing in five languages. As a result, she is well known in so many countries", says Helenè. “She is beloved among her fans. She is humble and does not jump up and down to promote her music. She made well-known songs even better known and every song she recorded, was a hit, e.g. Cucurrucucu, Only love, White rose of Athens and others. And of course, her daughter’s name is also Helenè – with the exact same pronunciation as mine. Which shows you, maybe she and my mom might be family yet!”

To book your tickets for Helene Bester sing Nana Mouskouri at the Theatre of Marcellus, Emperors Palace on Sunday, 9 February 2025 at 15:00, please visit www.LTickets.co.za.

South African theatre is set to break new ground with Musical Chairs, a dynamic and thought-provoking production blending street dance styles such as Amapiano, Hip Hop, House, and Campbel locking with classical music, physical theatre, and social commentary. This highly anticipated show will debut at Theatre on the Square, Sandton on 22 January 2025 until 2 February 2025.

Written and choreographed primarily by Genesis Shirindza of The Locksmiths Collective, Musical Chairs is a bold exploration of how we, as a society, interact with social media and navigate its overwhelming power. Using the playful premise of the childhood game, the production delves into themes of power dynamics, trends, love, acceptance, and rejection, painting a vivid portrait of our digital lives.

This innovative production invites audiences into an immersive experience where movement tells the story, layered with intentional lighting and a soundtrack blending classical compositions with electrifying street dance beats. In an unprecedented twist, the audience is called to engage and decide how the story unfolds, making Musical Chairs a truly interactive theatrical experience.

“We’re bringing together two worlds that often feel separate—street dance and traditional theatre,” says Lyndon Peterson, reflecting on the production’s boundary-breaking nature. “This collision of styles is stunning and introduces a new appreciation for both forms, especially for younger generations.”

The brainchild of The Locksmiths Collective, a multi-disciplinary theatre-making duo comprised of Sipho Didiza and Genesis Shirindza, Musical Chairs features collaboration with HERA duo Aurelie Stratton and Megan Carelse. With direction from Sipho Didiza and Hungani Ndlovu, and produced by Daphne Kuhn, Aurelie Stratton and Genesis Shirindza, the production boasts a cast of eight versatile performers who bring depth, energy, and emotion to the stage.

Audiences who have experienced previous work from The Locksmiths Collective praise the emotional impact and innovative storytelling of their productions.
Chris Langa shares, “Rarely do I encounter performances that evoke such a range of feelings. The storytelling through modern dance in Musical Chairs left a lasting impression on me.”

Prepare for an unforgettable journey that redefines South African theatre. Be part of the movement—come and witness the groundbreaking debut of Musical Chairs.

Tickets: Prices R180 per ticket. R150 for students and pensioners. Available now at Theatre on the Square’s box office or on Webtickets: https://www.webtickets.co.za/v2/event.aspx?itemid=1557825738

One of my favourite shows is making a return to Theatre on The Square!

The Sello Maake kaNcube Foundation in association with Daphne Kuhn of Theatre on the Square, Sandton, is proud to announce the return season of Can Themba’s iconic THE SUIT from 4 February to 16 February 2025.

Returning by popular demand after a sold-out season, The Suit is a powerful South African classic by Can Themba. This timeless tale explores themes of love, betrayal, and resilience during apartheid, making it an essential cultural experience for learners studying South African history and literature.

Directed by the acclaimed J. Bobs Tshabalala and produced by the Sello Maake KaNcube Foundation and Daphne Kuhn, this adaptation has received rave reviews for its emotional depth and stunning performances. Featuring a stellar cast, including Sello Maake KaNcube, Tshireletso Nkoane, Job Kubatsi, and Lebohang Motaung, The Suit promises to leave a lasting impression on all audiences, as it is educational and culturally enriching.

Written by banned investigative journalist and author, Can Themba, in the 60’s, THE SUIT is set in Sophiatown against the backdrop of the Apartheid regime’s forced removals under the group Areas Act.

It tells the story of Philemon who discovers that his wife, Matilda has a lover. When the lover flees after being discovered, he leaves behind his suit. Philemon devises a cruel punishment by forcing Matilda to treat the suit as a guest who must accompany them through every moment of the day. The story is a powerful metaphor for the impact of oppression on personal relationships, while it explores love and betrayal, unforgiveness, revenge and destructive intolerance.

“In the hands of one of South African theatre’s dream team, this is a gem of a work that brings the simplicity and levity of 1950s South African society into play.” - Robyn Sassen

Bookings can be made via ww.theatreonthesquare.co.za or Webtickets or telephonically via the Theatre on the Square Box office on 011 883-8606 / 083 3774969. Enquire about special block booking discounts for school and special interest groups.

I am incredibly sad to hear about the passing of Michelle Botes. She was a phenomenal actress and I loved the role that she played on Isidingo as Cherel De Villiers. My condolences go out to her family and friends. May she rest in peace. 💙

It’s all just a blur… yet the memory feels so clear.

This photo was taken at my very first media opening night in Johannesburg over seven years ago.

Back then, I was a brand-new blogger, equipped with nothing more than a budget-friendly cellphone and a trusty tablet that doubled as my "power tool." Sure, it wasn’t fancy, but it worked, and I was ready to take on the world! All I wanted was to write, and at the time, that was enough.

That little phone and tablet? They opened doors I never imagined. I started writing blog articles, sharing my stories on social media, and connecting with incredible people. It was the start of living one of my dreams—and I loved every moment.

But then, a few months in, someone commented on the quality of my photos. That little remark planted a seed of doubt, and before I knew it, I was comparing my work to others who were years ahead in their journey. My confidence took a hit.

Here’s the thing I wish I’d known back then: You don’t need perfect tools to start. You don’t need all the answers, either. What truly matters is showing up, using what you have, and letting your passion lead the way.

I came close to letting fear and doubt take me off course, but I chose to keep going. Looking back now, I’m so thankful I didn’t let that one comment hold me back.

No one starts as an expert. Growth happens through practice, learning, and a whole lot of showing up even when you’re unsure.

So, if you’ve been holding back on writing that article, posting on social media, or sharing your work because you think it’s “not good enough,” this is your sign to just start.

You have a gift. Use it, embrace it, thrive in it. No one can do what you do quite like you.

What’s one dream or goal you’ve been putting off because of doubt?

Which theatre production has stood out for me this year? My answer is simple…

The Suit!

I have been wanting to watch this show for a while, and on Friday night, I finally had the opportunity to do so. When we arrived at Theatre on the Square, Sandton, I was delighted to see it packed to capacity. I love seeing people come out to experience live storytelling on stage.

As the show progressed, I found myself in complete awe of the talent in front of us. Watching Sello Maake KaNcube, Tshireletso Nkoane, Job Kubatsi, and Lebohang Motaung bring this story to life was incredible.

If you haven’t seen it yet, The Suit is set in Sophiatown against the backdrop of the Apartheid regime’s forced removals under the Group Areas Act. It tells the story of Philemon, who discovers that his wife, Matilda, has a lover. When the lover flees after being discovered, he leaves behind his suit. Philemon devises a cruel punishment, forcing Matilda to treat the suit as a guest who must accompany them through every moment of the day.

Honestly, this is one of the best productions I’ve seen this year! From the stellar cast and the storytelling to the vintage 60s costumes, it was all just perfect. My heart broke for Matilda, and the ending took me by surprise. I’d watch it again in a heartbeat.

If you haven’t seen it yet, don’t miss out! Book your tickets through Computicket or contact the Theatre on the Square Box Office on 011 883-8606 / 083 377-4969. The show runs until 16 November.

Having recently completed a record-breaking season in the UK, André The Hilarious Hypnotist returns to South Africa to present a once-off show at Emperors Palace’s Theatre of Marcellus on 25 October 2024 at 19:30.

Andre The Hilarious Hypnotist has been dishing out his brand of hilarious hypnotic entertainment for the past 30 years. Having launched to fame in 1994 at the Victory Theatre in Johannesburg, André’s four-week season turned into a 11 week tour de force. From there André went on to tour across South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and Australia setting attendance records wherever he performed.

With his training in theatre and comedy, André brings to life his unique form of entertainment in which members of the audience become the stars of the performance. Using volunteers from the audience André hypnotises and then instructs these unsuspecting stars of the show to interact in various strange, weird and wonderful ways on his stage.

André who was trained by the late Max Collie brings a healthy dose of comedy to his one man show and with no two shows ever being the same André’s show has people returning night after night. With the snap of his fingers André turns the hypnotised volunteers into washing machines, typewriters, moon men and even a Baywatch lifeguard and that is just some of the hilarious routines performed under André’s hypnotic control.

André, the Hilarious Hypnotist is quick to assure people watching the show that he only uses volunteers when presenting the show. No person will be forced to be part of the performance but for those who do decide to brave the stage, they are guaranteed five minutes of fame as André makes them the stars of every performance. “Bring your family and friends and dare them to go on stage. That always creates a lot of fun but brings out the best in our volunteers!” says André. “If you have never been to a stage hypnosis show, now is the time to book your ticket as you are going to have such a “jol” with laughter all the way.”
