We're so proud to announce that I, Mary Documentary received a Special Mention by the High School Students Jury at Sole luna festival.

The members of the Special Jury give a special mention to the documentary I, Mary by Aliki Saragas-Georgiou for the following motivations:

â—Ź For the screenplay that, through the life of Mary, a resilient and generous woman, enabled to make us, young people, aware of the difficult life for people with Albinism in South Africa.

â—Ź For the strength of the documentary in leading the audience to question the role that traditions play within a community and their potential discriminatory consequences for some of its members.

â—Ź For the moral and existential strength of the protagonist, that makes her an example of human being able to bear the burden of discrimination and loneliness even within the family, without ever stopping the fight for creating awareness among other people suffering similar humiliations and building a world that is more respectful of human diversity.

â—Ź For the accurate and symbolic editing which, through a delicate composition of real life scenes and interviews with the protagonist, inspires a strong empathic response in the audience.

â—Ź For showing the innovative role of Internet in her life, through which Mary managed to express herself and denounce the forms of discrimination that people with Albinism are still suffering from today.

Introducing our next documentary that will be co-showcasing with Encounters South African International Documentary Festival.

I, Mary Documentary by Aliki Saragas-Georgiou

On the edge of light and darkness, this lyrical telling of Reginamary Ndlovu’s story is one about the pain that lurks beneath the surface. A survivor of a lifetime of sexual abuse, this fiercely determined woman with Albinism from Zambia and South Africa, fights everyday to overcome her past and create a present that she is proud of. In addition to having to deal with the dangerous myths surrounding people with Albinism that has kept her life in constant danger, Reginamary starts a self-funded online talk show “My Voice: Albinism The New Era” in order to position people with Albinism within an affirming framework. Determined to make an impact with her voice, Reginamary prepares for one of her most difficult episodes of her online Talk Show to date, which entails opening up old wounds in an attempt to find healing, support and community in a COVID-19 world. She reflects on the reality of not being able to read or write and attempting multiple su***de attempts, to becoming a motivational speaker and a conqueror of Mount Kilimanjaro. In preparation for the episode, Reginamary speaks to her mother for the first time about the abuse she endured as a child, exploring the intersection of abuse and Albinism. In an attempt to make her own and other voices visible on the world stage, she has to face her demons and self-examine her identities that hide beneath her masks. This is Reginamary’s story, and this is her Voice.

DFM 2021 Project Announcement

The Durban FilmMart Institute is proud to announce the 2021 Finance Forum Projects for the 12th edition of Africa’s premier film industry event - the Durban FilmMart - which takes place virtually from 16 to 25 July.

After receiving hundreds of applications, a total of 28 projects – comprising 14 documentaries and 14 fiction features - have been selected for the Finance Forum. The Finance Forum consists of individual mentorship, public pitching and one on one meetings with film investors, sales agents, distributors, content editors, broadcasters, and programmers, and is a core element of the DFM.

This year’s selection includes a diverse mix of emerging African talent alongside well-established filmmakers from across the continent. Participating African countries include the Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Morocco, Namibia, Senegal, South Africa, Swaziland, Tunisia, Uganda, and Zimbabwe

“The projects have come through despite the fact that much of the world went into lockdown last year which had a devastating impact on the film industry, says Magdalene Reddy, acting General Manager of the DFMI.

“But in true African spirit, the filmmakers on our continent persevered and continued to tell their stories as is evidenced by the quality of this year’s projects that are once again pushing the boundaries in African filmmaking. DFM is looking forward to once again highlighting Africa’s filmmaking talent and connecting the film projects to global players.”
