Amidst the challenging landscape of South Africa’s manufacturing and foundry sector, the National Foundry Technology Network (NFTN) continues to prioritise sustainability through resource and productivity improvement and efficiencies of local foundries. Through targeted interventions, the NFTN conducted comprehensive support interventions over a period of years which included benchmarking assessment, layout optimisation and assistance in acquiring an Air Emissions Licence (AEL).

“Due to the lack of guidance and structure and the added costs of creating an environmental management system (EMS), few companies chose to implement one. Today, however, the world has changed dramatically. Approximately 10 000 companies worldwide, including large US-based companies such as Ford and IBM, have been registered to ISO 14001,” explained Louis Miller, of Knights Foundry.

As everyone in the industry knows the Environmental Authorisation (EA) and Atmospheric Emissions License (AEL), is required by law. If you don’t comply you could be liable for a big fine. Air emissions licenses (AELs) are obligatory under the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act 139 of 2004 (AQA) for activities that result in atmospheric emissions.
