NFTN advances local foundry, Alcutech’s sustainability and efficiency ambitions
Amidst the challenging landscape of South Africa’s manufacturing and foundry sector, the National Foundry Technology Network (NFTN) continues to prioritise sustainability through resource and productivity improvement and efficiencies of local foundries. Through targeted interventions, the NFTN conducted comprehensive support interventions over a period of years which included benchmarking assessment, layout optimisation and assistance in acquiring an Air Emissions Licence (AEL).

Chris Bladen – bronze sculpture artist, fly-fisher and passionate birder [VIDEO]
Inspired in part by his father as well as his love of fly-fishing, Chris Bladen is a contemporary South African sculptor known for his striking bronze sculptures, particularly of fish and birds as well as other African wildlife. Bladen’s sculptures are notable for their realistic and intricately detailed portrayal of his subjects’ anatomy and movement, despite being constructed from raw industrial materials like bronze.

Knights Foundry achieves environmental certification in international standard ISO 14001
“Due to the lack of guidance and structure and the added costs of creating an environmental management system (EMS), few companies chose to implement one. Today, however, the world has changed dramatically. Approximately 10 000 companies worldwide, including large US-based companies such as Ford and IBM, have been registered to ISO 14001,” explained Louis Miller, of Knights Foundry.

Ferrous Castings breathes new life into foundry
Danie Cronje took over Mustang Foundry in April 2023, changed the name to Ferrous Castings and immediately set about not just improving the foundry’s working space, but also the general workflow of operations on the foundry floor. Part of the acquisition of the foundry included the purchase of various equipment and assets.

Thomas Foundry completes melting upgrade
Celebrates 100 years of operating from current location in Germiston. In 2019 Thomas Foundry embarked on a project to upgrade and modernise their melting department, which had furnaces that had given a return on investment to the company, many times over. Nevertheless, there comes a time when the capital investment decision has to be made otherwise you start to lose clients because of late deliveries and poor quality.

Proposed billet and precision casting foundry project. GeT Steel invites comment
Rely Intracast set to relocate to the site with the intention of establishing a new foundry. The GeT Metal Group announced in June 2023 that it had acquired Naledi Foundry Operations, one of the oldest and largest ferrous foundry operations in South Africa, that was placed in business rescue during April 2022.

Atmospheric Emission License but note the rules if you purchase new equipment, change or add a process or change ownership
As everyone in the industry knows the Environmental Authorisation (EA) and Atmospheric Emissions License (AEL), is required by law. If you don’t comply you could be liable for a big fine. Air emissions licenses (AELs) are obligatory under the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act 139 of 2004 (AQA) for activities that result in atmospheric emissions.

Carbon International celebrates 5 years of successful operation and growth
One of the products the shaft kiln calcination plant in Sasolburg produces is PROCARB SG, a carbon raiser used in the steel industry and by ductile and grey iron foundries. The innovative plant is the first of its kind to be erected in this country and in fact the first plant to be erected outside of China by the Chinese process engineering company, SAMI.
