The Correctional Services Portfolio Committee was informed that over 25% of prisoners who requested medical release passed away before their applications could be finalized in the 2023/24 fiscal year. The Department of Correctional Services briefed the committee on their operations, strategies to tackle obstacles, and advancements in the parole system. The Committee expressed concerns about the deaths of prisoners awaiting medical parole decisions and the need for an evaluation of the parole system. Members of the Committee discussed the need for professionals in the healthcare field on parole boards and training for community members involved in parole decisions. The department agreed to provide data on prisoners released on medical parole due to a terminal illness living productive lives. Mr. Damien Klopper expressed reservations about this issue, while Ms. Dereleen James emphasized the importance of community members caring for the well-being of the community. The department promised to provide additional information regarding the issue.
