1. 🤮 Health minister Joe Phaahla has called for vigilance after South Africa recorded cholera cases “imported” from Malawi. Two sisters had travelled together from Johannesburg to Malawi to attend a funeral service and returned by bus on January 30. A household family member of the sisters was admitted to hospital on February 4 with diarrhoea and dehydration, and is considered a possible case.
2. 💉 Meanwhile, parents with children under 14 years are encouraged to get them vaccinated against measles. A measles outbreak was declared after 406 lab-confirmed cases were reported across five provinces.
3. ✋🏾Paul Mashatile was on Monday sworn in as a Member of Parliament (MP), clearing the way for him to replace David Mabuza as South Africa’s deputy president. Former KwaZulu-Natal premier Sihle Zikalala, outgoing Gauteng MEC for economic development Parks Tau, and newly-elected ANC second deputy secretary general Maropene Ramokgopa were also sworn in as MPs.
4. 👨🏽⚖️ Blue Bulls rugby player Ngcebo Thusi appeared briefly in the Pretoria magistrate’s court on Monday after his arrest in connection with the murder of Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) student Ntokozo Xaba.
5. 👮🏽 As the eThekwini metro police service finalises its recruitment of 200 law enforcement officers, it has been revealed that about 1 300 constables and warrant officers from the SAPS had applied. Besides good working conditions, perks in the metro police are considered far better than in the SAPS. The salary entry level in the City force is R16 000, and with other benefits it shoots up to R24 000 before deductions while the SAPS entry-level pay is around R10 000. A SAPS warrant officer is believed to be earning around R20 000 while a constable’s salary was between R10 000 and R16 000.
6. 😳 TODAY’S SHOCKING NEWS: The Turkey and Syria earthquake death toll has moved from 2,600 to 4,300. The World Health Organisation expects the death toll to reach 20,000. Meanwhile, a landslide in Peru has killed 17 people.
