The civil unrest and looting occurred here in South Africa,businesses and shopping centers were looted and destroyed. The looting started on 9th of July in KZN province and spread to the Gauteng province on the evening of 11th of July. The Civil unrest and looting were sparked by the incarceration of the former president Jacob Zuma.
The looting led to closure of roads, such as the N2 & N3, 200 shopping centers where looted, 90 pharmacies were destroyed and 49 000 businesses were affected. The unrest and looting has led to shortage of food and medicine. Bheki Cele the minister of police confirmed that there is a death toll of least of 78 and 25 people were apprehended. The economy declined drastically and the South African rand weakened by 2%.The Civil unrest and looting has impacted everyone, particularly the youth, it was confirmed that most of the looters were the youth, which shows lack of discipline and 129 000 were lost, which caused the increase in youth unemployment rate,which is 32,6 % and the overall unemployment rate is 78,9%. A total of 32 Schools were destroyed in KZN, minimizing the chances of the youth to learn in a suitable environment and Teacher's union Naptosa reacted to this by saying "stealing objects and equipment from a school is contemptible, but stealing the future of innocent children and disrupting their lives is unforgivable". It is evident that the unrest and looting affected the youth tremendously and we must unite and work closely to repair their lives.
