It took me 5 years to stay current with podcasting trends.

And it took me 2 years to adapt my content accordingly the 2nd time.

Now, I can keep up with trends in just a few months.

Here’s the framework:

1. Follow industry leaders
2. Join podcasting communities
3. Attend webinars and conferences
4. Regularly review analytics.

I just attended the biggest podcasting conference.
(A truly overwhelming experience.)
Here’s what I learned:

The Podcast Show in London was a goldmine of insights. I met tech giants, leading networks, and top podcasters. The valuable talks with brilliant minds in podcasting were inspiring. This is just a little brain dump, I need some time to digest and then I'm going to post insights and learnings.

Highlights:
- Representing Africa on a panel with Kevin Y Brown (Afripods) and Bernard Masoka (Sound on Sound / Vusi Thembekwayo). The energy in our talk was electric, and the Q&A session showed genuine interest in the African market.
- Meeting Goalhanger Podcasts UK and Europes largest podcasts, to learn and build global opportunities.
- Connecting with Jordan Harbinger ... if you know, you know.
- Engaging with major networks like BBC, Amazon, and Paramount Pictures. Their senior management showed proactive serious interest in Africa as an emerging market, often seeking me out to talk about the market.
- Spending time with leaders from AdsWizz, Acast, Spotify, Triton Digital, Hubhopper, Podsqueeze, Podnews and more. Eye-opening discussions about the future of podcasting.

I went with a clear agenda : to showcase the global opportunities for African podcasting. I am usually frustrated that Africa is invisible in the global market place so we went with my fighty attitude to make sure we are seen as a viable market. But the market is opening up. There’s a genuine interest to grow the African marketplace.

But one thing really hit home for me.

In Africa, We REALLY need to learn to work together as an industry instead of in silos. Already the podcasting scene in SA is becoming fragmented and we need to get over this small minded mentality to become a force in the global universe, not a foot soldier trying to occupy a small corner.

There's big business if we overcome ourselves!
