Why Your Podcast Idea Would Bomb on Netflix

Imagine this: You’re pitching a show to Netflix executives. You walk into the room brimming with confidence and lay out your idea. “It’s a casual conversation between friends! We’ll talk about whatever comes up—life, pop culture, maybe some personal anecdotes. No structure, just vibes!” The room falls silent. One executive coughs. Another scribbles something in their notebook, likely, “Pass.”

Here’s the thing—if your podcast idea wouldn’t fly in that meeting, why should it fly with your audience? The truth is, when you launch a podcast today, you’re competing in the same attention economy as Netflix, TikTok, and YouTube. Your listeners aren’t comparing your podcast to other podcasts; they’re comparing it to everything. That means if your show lacks a compelling concept, sharp focus, or a reason to exist, it’s not just fighting for a spot—it’s doomed to get lost in the noise.

This isn’t a jab at your creativity—it’s a reality check. In a world where everyone is a content creator, “good enough” doesn’t cut it. If you want listeners to press play on your podcast, you have to treat it like the next big thing—because for them to care, it has to be. And if your idea wouldn’t even make it out of that Netflix pitch room alive, it’s time to rethink.
