Here’s a step-by-step guide to rolling cables using the *over-under* technique, which is popular in the audio and production industry because it helps prevent tangles and extends the life of your cables:
Step 1: Start with the right length
Grab your cable near one end. The technique works best with a cable of decent length, typically audio or XLR cables.
Step 2: Make the first loop (over)
With your hand facing upwards (palm up), grab the cable about a foot down from the connector. Pull it towards you and loop it over your hand naturally. This is the “over” loop, where the cable curls the way it naturally wants to.
Step 3: Make the second loop (under)
For the next loop, rotate your hand so your palm is facing down. Instead of letting the cable fall naturally, twist it with your fingers and make the loop curl in the opposite direction. This is the “under” loop.
Step 4: Repeat the process (over-under)
Continue alternating between over and under loops as you coil the cable. Each loop should sit neatly on top of the previous one without any force or twisting.
Step 5: Secure the cable
Once you’ve reached the end, use a cable tie or Velcro strap to secure your cable neatly in its coil. This keeps the cable organized and ready for the next use.
Bonus Tip:
If you don’t use the *over-under* method, the cable might twist awkwardly, causing kinks or damage over time. This technique maintains the natural flow of the cable and prevents tangles.
This method will make your life easier when setting up or packing down, and it keeps your cables in good working condition longer! 🎧🎛️
