THERE IS A NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN.
Today [11 September 2024].
The South African Police Service in Ermelo welcomed key stakeholders to an event introducing their newly appointed station commander, Colonel Maureen Nonkoliseko Sango-Gocongo. Representatives from the media, the Community Policing Forum (CPF), Gijima Tsotsi, Community in Blue, and other crime-fighting organizations were present for the occasion.
Colonel Sango-Gocongo opened her address by praising Ermelo’s existing crime-fighting initiatives, noting that the community has shown determination in tackling criminal activity.
She emphasized the need for immediate action, stating, "The crime situation outside is escalating. There is no time to waste. We must act now. I’m impressed by the community and the leadership here – the CPF, Community in Blue, and all the other stakeholders are ready. What we need to focus on now is engaging the youth, as many of the perpetrators are young. I won’t change anything that is already working."
She highlighted the critical role that the community plays in crime prevention, stressing that it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure a safer environment.
"We are all in this together. Just because you’re in town and the crime is happening elsewhere doesn’t mean you won’t be affected. If you have the means to prevent crime, take action. Issues like drug abuse and gender-based violence impact us all," she said.
In closing, Colonel Sango-Gocongo expressed her willingness to collaborate with anyone committed to reducing crime in Ermelo. "Let’s work together – CPF, Social Crime Prevention, Community in Blue, traditional leaders, and all other stakeholders. My door is always open if you have ideas or needs to help prevent crime. We are all here for one reason – to fight crime. My door is open."
This new leadership is expected to strengthen efforts against crime in the area, with a focus on youth involvement and community collaboration.
