SOMETIMES FAMILY IS NOT BLOOD ALONE

GQEBERHA- In a heartwarming tale that encapsulates the spirit of community and compassion,
Sindile Adams a 23-year-old trolley porter from Kariega, is on a transformative journey with the support of his colleagues and the local community.

Residing in a humble township with his grandmother and younger sister, Adams faced unimaginable hardships following the tragic loss of his mother at the tender age of five. Despite his challenges, he has shown resilience and determination, working diligently at a retail store to provide for his family.

Earlier this year, a perceptive colleague noticed a significant change in Sindile's behavior and reached out for a candid conversation.

It was during this man-to-man talk that Sindile revealed a long-held desire to undergo the initiation rite, a significant cultural milestone for young men in his community. For three years, he had yearned for this opportunity, yet lacked the necessary support to make it a reality.

Moved by Sindile's plight, his colleagues rallied together, determined to help him fulfill this dream. After consulting with female colleagues and gathering input from the men at work, they approached Sindile's grandmother to seek her blessing.

To their joy, she was happy, it had been her dream to see her grandson become a man before she departs from this world.

Upon visiting Sindile’s home, however, they were confronted with the stark reality of their living conditions. The family’s needs were overwhelming, sparking a grassroots movement within the community.

Colleagues at his workplace began reaching out for assistance from local residents, focusing on providing for the young family in their time of need.

Inventory manager at the retail store Unathi Nodada said, “The only effort we need is for the child to feel welcomed and be able to be accepted to the menhood. We at our company we are all regarding each other as family, we are one big happy family hence we took this upon us.”

This inspiring initiative not only aims to support Sindile in his rite of passage but also sheds light on the power of community and the importance of looking out for one another.

Through acts of kindness and solidarity, these colleagues have shown that family extends beyond bloodlines, it is also about taking care of each other in times of hardship.

PORT OF EAST LONDON BOOSTS EFFICIENCY WITH NEW TUGBOATS

EAST LONDON- Port of East London has taken a significant step towards enhancing its shipping operations with the arrival of two state of the art tugboats on 05 September 2024.

The tugboats, named Lentswe and Kganya, were delivered by Damen Shipyards Cape Town and marked the completion of Transnet National Ports Authority's(TNPAs) R1 billion investment in the Marine Fleet Renewal Programme.

A key element of Transnet's Recovery Plan, aims to boost tugboat availability and drive shipping efficiencies. The new tugboats replaced the existing fleet, which had reached its operational lifespan and feature advanced technology solutions, including an azimuth stern drive and an improved bollard pull of 60 tonnes.

"The acquisition of these tugboats is a crucial investment towards creating a sustainable port system," said Transnet Board Chairperson, Andile Sangqu.

In addition Sangqu said, "This will enable the ex*****on of strategic projects currently underway at the Port of East London."

The Port of East London's expansion plan includes the deepening and strengthening of the automotive berth, as well as the delivery of two Jib Cranes for the dry dock facility. The project is expected to increase volume throughput and position the port as a competitive player in the industry.

"We've been pushing for the Port of East London's expansion to attract investors and combat high unemployment in the province, with Mercedes-Benz South Africa's (MBSA) presence being a key factor in our efforts," said Acting Eastern Cape Premier Mlungisi Mvoko.

Damen Shipyards Cape Town Director, Sefale Montsi, expressed pride in delivering the tugboats, highlighting their contribution to local job creation and skills development.

The arrival of the new tugboats marks a significant milestone in the Port of East London's journey towards becoming a world-class port.

LADY IN HEELS STRUTS HER WAY TO KOTA STARDOM ON THE STREETS

MTHATHA- A 23 year-old Nomatshayina Dimpho Nqanqalaza from a small village Ngavu location in Libode, is juggling her third year in Bachelor of Education in mathematics and physical sciences at Walter Sisulu University(WSU) with an ambitious side hustle of selling kotas on the bustling streets of Mthatha.

Driven by the need to support her mother and eight siblings after the loss of her father in 2010, Nqanqalaza has transformed her entrepreneurial spirit into a lifeline for her family.

Growing up in a disadvantaged environment, Nqanqalaza developed an early knack for business, often braiding hair to contribute to her household.

"I started braiding people's hair in the village so that I can be able to support my family," she shared.

However after the untimely passing of her father, the burden of financial responsibility fell heavier on her shoulders, prompting her to find creative ways to make ends meet.

Additionally selling kotas, a popular South African street food has become her means of survival.

Nqanqalaza describes the intricacies of her new venture, "As a street seller I've faced so many challenges, dealing with unpredictable weather and diverse customers, many of whom are not aware of how to communicate respectfully, is tough," she said.

Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the grit and determination among young South Africans striving for a better life against the odds.

Despite the challenges, Nqanqalaza remains optimistic and motivated, tirelessly working not only to support her family but to inspire others facing similar hardships.

Mthatha's vibrant streets have become a platform for her resilience, proving that with ambition and hard work, even the most daunting obstacles can be overcomed and she also owns a company called Zsd where she sells weaves and iPhones.

"I want my kota business to grow and make people happy, I want to sell kotas in more places and even open a small restaurant (I believe that would bring more job opportunities in the community.
I want to help people in my community by sharing food,"she added.

Furthermore as she continues her studies while running her business, Nqanqalaza hopes to pave a brighter future for herself and her siblings, proving that success can indeed be earned by those willing to fight for it.

EMPOWERING AFRICAN FARMERS FOR SUSTAINABLE GROWTH

EAST LONDON- The Eastern Cape's Agriculcural Sector will host a 2 day largest Agriculcural Expo that will be held at Buffalo Club in East London, on 29-30 August 2024.

The AGRI 5 Commodities Workshop & Expo is celebrating its eleventh year in 2024, solidifying its position as a premier platform for promoting agricultural development in Africa.

This esteemed event focuses on enhancing the participation of African farmers in the agricultural sector, spanning poultry, livestock, dairy, crop, and piggery commodities. A key objective is to facilitate the transition of produce to its secondary form through agro-processing.

The workshop and expo offer a unique opportunity for private companies and government departments to showcase their social programs, engage in meaningful dialogue, and share development experiences with African farmers.

According to Event Director Tsholo Mokobe, "This collaborative approach will drive the sector towards achieving measurable results for black commercial and emerging farmers, ensuring they possess the knowledge to sustain and grow their farming activities".

A key focus of the expo is creating awareness about agro-processing, showcasing various means to process produce and add value to their products. Farmers will be equipped to maximize their output and tap into new revenue streams.
