A harrowing ordeal for a 34-year-old woman came to an end when she managed to escape from her captor, leading to the arrest of a 34-year-old suspect. The suspect appeared at the Nkomazi Magistrate's court in Tonga on January 8, 2025, facing charges of kidnapping and r**e. The matter was postponed to January 15, 2025, for a formal bail application.

According to reports, the victim was kidnapped on December 8, 2024, and held captive for three days. During this time, she was allegedly r**ed and threatened not to report the incident. However, the victim's bravery and determination led her to escape from her captor and report the matter to the police.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the police for arresting the suspect. General Mkhwanazi also issued a stern warning to those engaging in criminal activities, stating that the law will take its course without fear or favor.

The SAPS is committed to ensuring that justice is served and perpetrators of heinous crimes are brought to book," General Mkhwanazi said. "We applaud the bravery of the victim and encourage all victims of crime to report incidents to the police."

In a separate incident, a 37-year-old suspect was arrested on January 9, 2025, for a r**e case that occurred in May 2015 at Pienaar. The suspect appeared at the Nelspruit District Court on January 10, 2025, and the matter was postponed to January 15, 2025.

These arrests demonstrate the commitment of the South African Police Service to combating crime and ensuring justice for victims. As General Mkhwanazi emphasized, "Police officials should always be exemplary in the manner that they conduct themselves. Any member who crosses the line should know that there will be consequences."

Karen Rimmer, head of distribution at PSG Insure, warned South Africans with solar installations to update their insurance policies.

Updated insurance policies are needed to cover installations, manage risks, and safeguard their alternative energy investments.

Eskom is proposing a 36% power tariff hike for 2025, which means South Africans could soon see a steep rise in electricity costs, impacting budgets.

Despite surpassing 200 days without load-shedding, many households and business owners are still seeking alternative energy sources to keep costs down and ensure consistent electricity supply.

A 57-year-old Home Affairs official, Violet Veleleni Mabena has been arrested by the Hawks for allegedly selling a South African identity document (ID) to a foreign national for R20,000. Mabena who worked at the Home Affairs office was apprehended on Tuesday after an investigation into the illegal sale of official documents.

The Hawks South Africa elite crime-fighting unit confirmed the arrest in a statement revealing that Mabena had facilitated the transaction, which involved the sale of a legitimate South African ID to a foreign national. The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, reportedly sought the document in order to access social services and benefits intended for South African citizens.

According to authorities Mabena used her position within the Department of Home Affairs to unlawfully issue the identity document, bypassing the normal checks and procedures. The transaction took place at an undisclosed location, and after an extensive investigation, the Hawks were able to track down the individuals involved.
